A white circle with a green border and a green checkmark means that a file or folder in the Dropbox folder on your desktop was opened (directly or with a third-party application) and synced. It also represents files uploaded from the computer you are using.
Below are the different Dropbox icons in your taskbar (Windows). This is visible when the Dropbox desktop app is running on your computer. These icons show you the sync status of your entire Dropbox account, not just the status of one file or folder.

You can also see the sync status of your entire Dropbox account in the bottom left of the Dropbox app window. To open the Dropbox app window, click the sync icon you see from the table above. If your files are fully synced, the text in the bottom left corner will say Your files are up to date.
If your files are fully synced, this will look like a solid black Dropbox icon with no other icons. If you have unread notifications, this icon will feature a red circle with a white number in it. Learn more about sync icons in the Dropbox desktop app for Windows and Linux or macOS.

The Dropbox icon will only appear in your taskbar or menu bar if the Dropbox desktop app is downloaded to your computer and running. Occasionally, the Dropbox icon will seem to "disappear," because the desktop app is inactive on your computer.
After you install the Dropbox desktop app on your computer, you can access Dropbox from the icon in your taskbar (Windows) or menu bar (Mac) or the Dropbox folder in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac).

Dropbox Web Helper supports the Dropbox user interface on Mac computers. It only runs when the desktop app is running.
Dropbox Web Helper is an independent process, so it may start and stop at different times than the desktop app. If you adjust your firewall or antivirus software for Dropbox, we recommend similar adjustments for Dropbox Web Helper.
Generally, the Dropbox desktop application will show a Dropbox icon in your system tray (Windows) or menu bar (Mac) to let you know the overall status of Dropbox. Occasionally, the Dropbox icon will seem to disappear.
Actually, the Dropbox icon not showing issue may be caused by different errors such as temporary failure of Dropbox or system errors. For example, if you updated your Windows PC, you might suddenly not be able to see Dropbox showing inside your taskbar, even though the process is running.
In some cases, due to a temporary failure of Dropbox, Dropbox may be not working or the Dropbox icon missing error may occur. Therefore, you can try to restart Dropbox by quitting the program completely and starting it again to see if the error disappears. Follow the instructions below to restart the Dropbox application:
If there is something wrong with your Dropbox installer, you may also encounter Dropbox icon not showing issue. Some users have had success in fixing the issue with the Dropbox icon not showing up in their taskbar by uninstalling and reinstalling the app on their PC. In this case, you should try to upgrade or reinstall the latest version of the Dropbox with the steps below:
You must have been used to the idea of not wasting valuable storage space on your PC when you can store your data in the cloud. However, the Dropbox sync icon issue may prevent you from enjoying this experience. Luckily, you can use Dropbox alternatives, like Google Drive and OneDrive, to avoid these annoying problems. If there are some important files in Dropbox, you may need to migrate these files to the new cloud storage.
But I have all notifications on. When I delete a file from one of dropbox folders the icon doesn't show syncing (which it does properly), just stays with red box. When I restart the program, the icon shows syncing, but then shows the same red box.
All the notifications are ON and READ. Actually the question is why the icon depends on reading notifications at all, quite a strange logic imho And btw it's not described here: -en/installs-integrations/sync-uploads/sync-icons
Yes, sometimes I connect a second display to my laptop, connecting it doesn't change the look of the icon. I updated the app to the newest version. The red box still remains. Nothing happens when I click on it. Double click pops up my dropbox folder in file explorer.
Wrong notifications. You clicked the Windows 10 Notifications, but Dropbox has it's own. You click the Dropbox icon once for the menu to appear, then click on the Bell icon to view your Notifications panel.
When I click on the dropbox icon nothing happens, nether left nor right click don't work. The menu like on your screenshot doesn't appear. I reinstalled the newest version but nothing changed. I guess my only option is to just live with that )
Same thing happened to three of my computers recently (we have seven- 4 old and 3 new - but all seven share the same dropbox). The DB Icon disapeared from the uppermost bar on three computers, but the dropbox folder remains in the Finder windows on those three computers, and the green circle icons on the right of each inner folder are "gone." On the other computers DB seems normal - the green icon is on the right of each folder is there, etc, but they do not have the updated info that was saved on the computers without the Icon. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I transfered some videos I edited yesterday to Dropbox and sent links to several people. However, this morning the DB icon is gone from the menu bar. So I clicked the app to start DB. Nothing happened. I rebooted my Mac and it still wasn't there so I re-downloaded the app and rebooted my Mac again . Still no menu bar icon. I clicked the app again and nothing happened. I've never had this problem before in 5 years of using Dropbox on this same Mac, except that a couple of weeks ago I upgraded to OSX Mojave 10.14.5, and I had to redownload the DB app because it disappeared after the install, but it's been there ever since until this morning. It was there last night, so why isn't it here this morning?
These messages are about the theme that you are using (ChaletOS_Default). It has some errors in it. You should let the ChaletOS developers know so that they can the fix the missing elements. Although these errors may affect the display of panel items, it shouldn't result in a "missing icon" icon.

Starting today, I tried to open Dropbox that is pinned to the taskbar. It wouldn't open. I opened the program folder and double-clicked on the .exe file. It also would not open Dropbox. I uninstalled and reinstalled with same issue. I can open it from a desktop icon, but why will it not open from the executable file in the program folder which means I cannot pin it to the taskbar. I'm running Windows 11 Pro 23H2 with latest build.
Hi Jay, I think I fixed it. The attached photo shows the target path of the icon pinned to taskbar that will not open. Start menu icon had no properties. I then went to the desktop icon that will open the program and replaced the taskbar icon target with the path C:\Users\robch\Dropbox
which will now open the program from the taskbar. The executable icon in the program folder remains as per the attached photo. Should I change the target or just leave it as is? At least I can open and use the program now from the taskbar icon.
I just did an advanced reinstallation with the same result. The folder will opn using the desktop icon, but not from clicking the executable in the program folder which means I cannot open the program from the taskbar. Could a very recent update to Windows 11 have caused this? It just started within the last week and I've been using Dropbox for years.
Thanks for the info. Could you try right clicking the taskbar icon and then Properties, and likewise with the Dropbox icon in the start menu, and let me know what the executable path is showing up as? A screenshot of this would help greatly.
I'm pretty sure it's not an issue with tint2 or the icons I'm using (which are all custom-made, 16x16 px). The dropbox package was at 1.2.52-1, but the latest (1.4.7-1) looks exactly the same. Even after restarting X. Thanks.
