Saw a bit of an old interview with Michele Phillips on VH1 last night
and she briefly mentioned her involvement with Gene Clark. I didn't
realize it, but it lead to her being fired by John Phillips from the
Mamas and Papas.

She said that she left him a pass for their concert and that he showed
up in the front row wearing a bright red shirt. Denny Doherty described
how Michele Phillips stood on stage blowing Clark kisses, which had the
predictable effect on John. After the show, he told her she was through
with the group and fired her. She was out of the group for two months,
and they actually had another singer (Jill Gibson) replace her during
that time.

Just long enough to be replaced on the second(?) album jacket by Ms. Gibson,
who bore a passing resemblance to her.

It is also detailed in John's autobio as well. Geno had Michele in mind
when he wrote one of my favorite Byrds songs 'She Don't Care About
Time'. Evidently Michele was not terribly prompt and kind of kept her
own version of time. Her shagging of Geno was certainly a factor, but
the clinker was when John found out she shagged Dennie rotten. THEN came
the letter.

Also, I don't think Jill Gibson's contribution were actually on the
masters. Michele was brought back into the group and recorded her takes
after the fact.

Also two set of cover art existed for 'Cass, John, Michelle, Dennie The
Mamas and The Papas'. Michelle was stripped out and Jill Gibson's photo
was inserted. Later the second cover (with Jill) was scrapped when
Michelle rejoined.

Has anyone seen a recent interview of Michele's thoughts on John's
passing? They were not speaking at the time of his death and in fact sat
on opposite ends of the stage during the R&R HOF induction show.

It is a shame someone's death brings about such thought provoking
dialog... mine included...

Cheers,

Jon

John's death isn't why VH-1 aired the special. They were showing the Behind
The Music specials of artists who were already in the Hall Of Fame, as the
induction was last night on MTV. What's cool is that they did the
Airplane/Starship Behind The Music, and both specials that I watched
mentioned various Byrds.

An interview that I saw she said he wore a turtleneck shirt 'with a red
jacket', and that John, having observed her reaction to Gene's presence, made
her go to the other side of the stage...Tom

There's actually a photo of album art in one of the latter Mamas & Papas 'best
of's that shows Jill Gibson, 'stripped into' the existing group shot. BTW, if
memory serves, Jill was the girlfriend of Jan Berry, of Jan & Dean, and did
some songwriting, photography, and production on her own for other
artists...Tom

Right. She was interviewed quite a bit for the Jan & Dean "Behind the Music."

I'm inclined to doubt the "She Don't Care..." inspiration, only because the
song's a bit too early (Nov. '65 c/r registration) to coincide with their -um-
tryst. (Had "California Dreaming " even hit by that point? I can't remember
offhand.) I like to think, as Johnny Rogan does, that "Echoes" ("You can
watch Regina dance through the crystal panes of glass./But you know there's so
much more that she's not seeing...") has some Michelle in it.

Michelle was seeing Gene after the M&P's recorded their 1st album and it all
was entwined during that time Gene left the Byrds and had his depression
problem. I don't think he wrote 'She Don't Care About Time' about her....
Gene was definitely the reason she was bounced out of the M&P's the 1st
time... there was another time Michelle was kicked out later, which was not
as well publicized. I don't believe Jill Gibson ever recorded with the group
but she did some live shows during her tenure. Mostly it was a problem with
the cover photo with her being cropped in to cover Michelle's
picture. At the time I think Jill Gibson was Lou Adler's girlfriend.
