Great balls o' fire! The esteemed editor of Guitar (the UK one) in
a moment of confusion has asked me to do an article on Clarence White.

I have the stuff already in the a.m.b archive but if anyone has
anything else: pix, anecdotes, favourite tracks, sources, etc that
they would like to contribute, fire away.

Paul

Clarence is survived by his wife Susie & daughter Michele. He also had a
brother, Roland, who was in the Kentucky Colonels with Clarence, and later
joined Lester Flatt's band. Roland got Marty Stuart into Flatt's band & they
became good friends. If Roger doesn't know how to contact them, Marty Stuart
probably does. In addition to owning the Clarence Tele, Marty is a big
Clarence White/Byrds fan & loves to talk and jam. I don't know what kind of
budget or deadline you have, but Marty could also show you many Clarence
licks on the b-bender Tele if you need them for the article. He's on the road
thru the end of September. Best way to contact him would be through
MCA/Nashville.

Sorry to tell you that this is not the case. Many years ago Clarence's widow
Susie and their young son Bradley were killed in a car crash together.
Clarence and Susie's daughter Michelle *is* still living, recently re-married,
has several (four? kids), and is doing well.

Again just to update this info, Roland has been for many years a member of the
multi-Grammy winning group The Nashville Bluegrass Band.

Didn't Clarence have other siblings and relatives who perform?
Aren't 'The Whites' (the singing group/Ricky Skaggs is married
to one of the daughters) related to him? I recall that his dad played
with his sons sometimes - is he still around?
Appreciate it...Tom

Clarence's father was a musician, as were Clarence's brothers Roland
and Eric, and their sister Joann. The Kentucky Colonels started in 1952
as a family unit including Clarence and his two brothers and their
sister.

Any current info on Eric or Joann?

Clarence and Roland White did have siblings who performed. Their sisters
Joanne and Rosemary were briefly in a family band with them (early 50s?), as
were their father Eric White Sr.(harmonica) and their brother Eric White Jr.
(bass). Eric Sr. passed on many years ago. Eric Jr. had some serious problems
that eventually led to his having to stop performing in public, and I am not
sure whether he is still alive or not. Joanne and Rosemary were never really
into being "performers," and as I recall quit singing when they got married.

The Whites, Clarence and Roland are not related to the Whites, Sharon and
Cheryl and Buck. The former family surname is LeBlanc, which Eric Sr.
Anglicized to White (literal translation from the French) sometime before the
family moved from Maine to California in the early 50s. (all this is only
approximate, and based on my very hazy memory). Far as I know, the Buck White
Whites are actually Whites.

Don't think that Buck White is related to Clarence or Roland White.

Roland currently plays with the Nashville Bluegrass Band. You might
find him in the Nashville phone directory. I've seen him on the street a
couple times when I've been in Nashville. He plays fairly often at the
Station Inn.

A Clarence White article-- FANTASTIC!

Comments on this thread-

I heard somewhere that Roland is no longer in the Nashville Bluegrass
band. If anyone is interested I could check around to confirm this.

As to Clarence's guitars, I seem to remember reading something about a
D-28 herringbone with an over-sized soundhole which is supposedly now in
the possession of Tony Rice, whose recent project with his brother Wyatt,
Herb Pedersen, and Chris Hillman has been mentioned on this list.

It would be interesting to learn what bluegrass-oriented guitarists like
Tony Rice, Doc Watson, Dan Crary, etc. have to say about Clarence.

Perhaps this has been discussed previously, but if anyone cares to go into
the details about the construction and use of the Parsons-White
stringbender, I for one would be very interested.

Hi a.m.b.ers,

As some of you may know, I have a website about the Byrds
called ByrdWatcher (http://ebni.com/byrds). I have profiles
of Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark up on the site. I was
planning to do Chris Hillman next, but lately I have had a
number of questions about Clarence White, and then someone
sent me a magazine article I didn't have... Since I was
immersed in Clarence stuff anyway, I decided to go ahead and
update the profile on Clarence White that I had done a while
ago and get it posted to the site.

Hope you folks will have a look at it. Please let me know
about any errors or oversights you see.

I have also revamped the page on Nashville West, which is
much more detailed now. You can reach these pages by going
to the front page of the site.

Thanks,

Hi a.m.b.ers,

A few minutess ago I was having some difficulty posting a
message about the new Clarence White profile on ByrdWatcher.
The darn browser-news-mailer didn't seem to be working
right! Tried several times, it just wouldn't post.

Then I checked, and of course it ended up posting my message
four times. Argh! So sorry. I have tried to cancel the extra
messages. We'll see if that works any better. To anyone I
didn't catch in time, sorry for the accidental spam.
