I was just on ebay and saw a new bogus Byrds CD up for auction. I had
to look closely at the track listing to confirm that's it not the real
thing. The cover art shows Roger, Clarence, Skip & Gene playing
acoustically. Anybody have any thoughts about this kind of packaging.

I think it's one thing for the Michael Clarke estate to have the legal
right to exploit the name "Byrds" in a copyright sense, but surely that
should not include the use of a photo of members of the "real" Byrds
in such a blatantly deceptive way. I hope no one buys this piece of
stuff.

This CD has nothing to do with the Michael Clarke estate. It probably is an
unofficial CD and it does indeed have a few songs by a fake Byrds band (two
guys named Chapman & McCullogh. But the rest of the CD is fantastic, it's
all studio quality unreleased Gene Clark songs sung by him and co-writer Pat
Robinson. Buy it ! You won't be disappointed.

Oh...so this must include the CRY (Clark, Robinson & York) recordings ? It's
too bad that it's packaged the way it is. I'm sure these recordings (the Gene
Clark tunes) could stand on their own. However, in their present form, I think
I'll take a pass.

I picked up a Flying Burritto Brothers CD called LIVE IN EUROPE (on the
British Summit label) with a photo shot of Hillman, Parsons, Ethridge and
Sneaky Pete in the same Nudie outfits as the cover of the first album.
Inside is a pretty good essay by a Joseph Adair on the early history of the
real FBB, Parsons as solo act, Hillman thru the 80's, etc. No mention of
the latter day lesser versions of the FBB. It's not until the last
paragraph that he says:

"As can be heard from the audience response here, the Burritos- though
considerably changed in line-up..."

No mention is ever made of who is in the band other than "...as long as
Pete Kleinow...has breath in his body he'll keep their country-rock flag
flying." and no recording date or place is ever given.

This seems to be a semi-legit label (includes an address to write for
catalog) and was bought in a store not know for bootlegs. But it is was
only $9.99 (which should have been the hint I needed rather than trying to
remember if the original band ever toured Europe and what songs seemed out
of place...)

This CD is a reissue of the 1991 Sundown CD called ENCORE - LIVE IN EUROPE
and it was recorded in Albi, France and Barcelona, Spain in May 1990. The
lineup is Sneaky pete, Gib Guilbeau, John Bealnd, Larry Patton and Rick
Lanow.

I also have two "bogus" Flying Burrito Bros cd's. Can anybody help me with the
lineups from those ones??

CD-1:
Title: Cabin Fever
Recorded: 1985 tour
(c) 1989 Relix Records
The back cover reads: Producer: Skip Battin / Cover art: Sneaky Pete Kleinow, so
I assume they were in theat version of the band? There is a picture inside, but
I con't know their faces.. Can make a scan if anybody wants it.

CD-2:
Title: Live
Recorded: The Altstadt, Eindhoven, Holland. (date ???)
(c) 1989 Disky BV
The cover shows a photo of the band. It appear to be the same 4 men as on the
'85 cd.

Any help on the line-ups would be appreciated!

thanks, Jochem

This has rundown on the genesis of the latter group.
These are not bogus records by a pretend group. Relix is a
regular label.
Sneaky was there (but is not now). Skip was there for a while
but also flew coop.
Anyway, i prefer to give these guys a break. I saw a refried
Burrito brothers with Gene Parsons, Sneaky and Chris Ethridge and
they were wonderful. Then Etheridge left and Skip was there for
another great show.
That said, i have Cabin Fever (the Cd) and its pretty week. i
understand the new band is a tight outfir and has put out two
good CDs in a row, with guests like Merle Haggard.
I guess i'll have to look into them myself!

The last 2 Burrito albums are very good: Sons of the Golden West on Grateful
Dead Records and California Jukebox.

I'd give them a break, too, except for the use of a cover photo of Parsons,
Hillman, Ethridge and Kleinow on an album recorded in 1990.

Glenn...these are studio.. finished tracks... very, very good.
Should have been a released Gene Clark & Pat Robinson
album or possibly CRY. They are all preciously unreleased.
There are 4 bogus Byrd tracks + a bogus Byrdie medley...
that are merely filler for some great music.

1) Love's a Loaded Word (G. Clark/P.G. Robinson/N.Hopkins)
2) Boyfriend, Girlfriend (G. Clark/P.G. Robinson)
3) Quicksand (G. Clark/P.G. Robinson)
4) Tell It Like It Is (G. Davis/L. Diamond)-Gene Clark lead
5) As If We Didn't Know (P.G. Robninson)
6) The Panther (G. Clark/P.G. Robinson)-Gene Clark lead
7) Dragon Eye (G. Clark/P.G. Robinson)-Gene Clark lead
8) Slip Away (P.G. Robninson)
9) Dangerous Games (G. Clark/P.G. Robinson)-Gene Clark lead
10) My Marie (G. Clark/P.G. Robinson)-Gene Clark lead
11) Washington Square (G. Clark/P.G. Robinson)-Gene Clark lead
12) Prisoner of Time (P.G. Robinson)
13) You Better Move On (A. Alexander, Jr.)-Gene Clark lead

The bogus Byrds CD you
refer to - Is this an old scam
or something new? I haven't
come across it before. But
what I'd really like to know is
are there unrecorded Gene
songs sung by Gene and how
many? <snip>

I would agree that the last 2 Burrito cd's are excellent, John Beland who has a
long history with Burritos also played some pretty awesome guitar with Rick
Nelson and Linda Ronstadt to name a few has taken over coordination of the
groups efforts. Sneaky Pete had some heart problems and was not on last cd but
was on California Jukebox, both are fine.
