Radiofreecash is the best paradox yet. Selfcancelling phrases (as the good
people in Beatnigs said: freash-frozen, military-intelligence etc).
What ´s next?

So Long, suckers!
cuz no one is here anymore... it's the emptiest I've seen this group ever! It's
not helping much that Last Astronaut (or whatever the new name is for this
record) is not out yet... hopefully, once it's released, there will be a
"renewed interest" in the band and trolls, er, I mean new fans will start
showing up here wanting to know more. hopefully.

yeah, i agree they are alot different from their early days....but that was
over 15 years ago too. it's one thing to take acid everyday and freak out on
stage for 11 months out of the year when youre in your 20's. life seems
neverending then. but it's another thing when you're approaching the 40's
and suddenly all of that acid and alcohol, etc is catching up with you. plus
you have families and other responsibilities to be concern with (like yer
old creaking body). as far as muscial creativity goes, i think it would be
silly for the BHS to keep treading the same "shocking/psyche" territory over
and over. i think it was an amazing feat that the band was able to create
such a cult following, demand high guarnatees for shows, etc back in the
80's. but partly due to the fact of their "groundbreaking" music, style
(etc) and that of other groups, we got the upswing of so many
"alternative/grunge/etc" music culture (pardon the labels, i hate 'em too).
i cant see Locust Abortion Technician sounding as crazy now as it did back
in 87, so much musical ground has been covered since then. although, a good
dose of Texan psyche never hurt anyone!! >;)
ps- paul leary is definitely one of the best guitarist....Hairway still
floors me.
I must respectfully disagree. I think that "The Last Astronaut" is one
of the best records I've ever heard. It has remained in my 6 CD changer
and has been in heavy rotation at home and the office for almost two
years now. There are very few records that can be played that
frequently and never get old. The Butthole Surfers have been my
favorite band since I was in eighth grade (I am now almost 30), and the
one thing I have never asked of them was that they not change - had I
done so I would have been painfully disappointed by most of their
records. I have heard fans wail and cry about how bad the new record is
as long as they have been coming out with new records. Those of you
that got into the Butthole Surfers circa "PeePee the Sailor" will
remember that an awful lot of the original punk fan base, especially
around Austin, did not like the later records at all - including the
beloved "Locust Abortion Technician". I think that we can all agree
that regardless of the fact that "Locust Abortion Technician" sounded
very little like "PeePee the Sailor" it was still a fantastic record.
So too is "The Last Astronaut". Like many of the greatest Butthole
Surfers records it took time and effort to warm up to this record.
Let's face it, some of this band's music is so freakishly odd that one
can be excused for not "getting it" on the first listen. Time and
effort spent in the struggle to like the music seldom goes unrewarded
with this band, but it can indeed be a struggle at times. My advice to
those who don't like "The Last Astronaut" is to listen again, repeat as
necessary. There is a tremendously good record in there for those
willing to work with the band to find it.

yeah, but Paul and Gibby want to write hit songs...$$$$
i hope you werent't suggesting that writing a hit song is bad! the whole thing
with wanting to write another hit is cuz they have no money! they were shafted
by capitol and got the short end of the stick with touch and go, so they need
some living money to stay afloat... in their position (after 'pepper'), a hit
song would get them another group of newer younger fans, and pay the bills.
plus, it gives them some financial ground to stand on again; which benefits the
older fans with all the stuff they *might* release or release. (double live,
blind eye, rare tracks, etc.)
another hit would do us all some good, I think.
what kind of "hit" are you talking about? >;)
my point exactly! I'll take any "hit" from the BHS any day!
