A December morn.
The summer sailors shiver.
A nip in the air.
Laurie
Dear Laurie-
Thank you for the poem. Being of Japanese descent, reading it
brought back memories of the dread I would feel when going to
school on December 7. Kids being kids, my classmates would
tease me mercilessly on that, as if the surprise attack were my
own personal doing or the fault of my family.
Perhaps you are too young or too old to know, but when I
grew up in the 70s in the San Francisco Bay Area, "Nip" was
the most derogatory name that someone could call a Japanese
American. For my parent's generation, "Jap" was more
offensive because of the WWII connotations, but later "Nip"
became the racial slur of choice.
Of course, I have no idea what your motivations were when
you posted the poem. I suppose if you had capitalized the "N"
in "nip" your intentions would have been clear. It is also
possible that you found the double entendre in the poem
amusing and inoffensive. I will not cast aspersions as to your
intent, but I would ask that before you consider posting that
particular haiku again, please realize that you may be bringing
back uncomfortable memories for many people and that for
some Japanese Americans, "Nip" is regarded as a rather vile
racial slur.

Jack, I think you might have missed the poster's point :) (or, then again,
maybe I am reading too much into it...)
I thought by asking what year it was he was commenting on the possible
(although I'd like to think unintentional) racist overtone to that haiku. And
that if the person did use the word 'nip' intentionally, he (the person who
asked what year it was) was being facetious (that they'd drag out an old racist
statement against the Japanese in 2003).
see guren's post preceding the one you commented on for further explanation - a
very informative post. I admit to not knowing it was a racist term until I
read his post and can now understand why some might have a problem with it.
Again, I'd like to think it was an unintentional use of the word, but if you
really think about it, the entire haiku had maybe 10-20 words, and to pick a
racist term for Japanese as one of them in a haiku about Pearl Harbor - I have
to ask myself how could it be? Maybe I'm just more cynical after the last few
weeks around these parts.......

NO WAY that was not meant to be a racial slur.

And yes I have a sense of humor. Use of racist terms in a haiku, or any other

For what it's worth - and after the fact this seems crazy but it's 100%
true - when I first read the haiku (last night) I didn't pick up on the word
nip. All I thought of was "chilly" air. I thought it was well done, how
the last line reinforced the earlier lines (about winter).
It wasn't until this morning when I read Glen's elequent post that I saw the
word nip for what it is (and realized it for what it was). Without Glenn's
post I would have never notcied.
I know things about Laurie's family that make me 100% sure she just made an
honest, albeit unfortuanate, mistake.

Thanks for asking. I do like that 2000 Touring Band DVD, however, I don't
need an "audio only" copy, as I have several 2000 boots (so all the songs
are on those).
Here's some good news, I got a new set of Can-Ams in recently and am about
90% organized. This means that when someone says, do you own this or that
(?) I can actually go to my fully organized & alphabeticized cd storage
units and find out!
It also means I can easily locate things now. Like those 2000 & 2003 PJ
boots, my Bruce boots, and all the other boots that I have, from The Allmans
to Tool (hey, that Tool boot is awesome!).
Anyway, Jack, read up about the 2000 and/or 2003 boots, as chances are good
I have several two that you want. The only set where I don't have any
representative shows is the Europe, Asia, Australia stretch of 2003 (Leg-1).
I checked Ten Club too late to buy those, so started buying the 2003 boots
on Leg-2, which is mainly US, Canada & Mexico. I suppose I could trade my
Leg-2 2003 boots for the Leg-1 boots I want (such as Perth). Anyway, read
up and let me know what you like. If anyone else is interested in 2000
and/or 2003 PJ boots drop me a line (remove NOSPAM) and we'll work out a
trade.
I also have a fantastic Europe, Asia & Australia compilation that Laurie
(the person who started this thread) compiled and sent to me. I've been
meaning to make some freebies for this group. Hope to get that done by
Christmas weekend.
Pearl Harbor day? "Nip" in the air? You can't say NO WAY. I say it's a
greater chance of being a racial slur than not.
>While it's not my job to stick up for
Laurie I'd be amazed to find out she was ever intentionally racist.>
For the record, I didn't say she was racist. I said the haiku deliberately used
a racist slur and that I didn't see any humor/creativity in the haiku.
I also don't know why she would post something like that - did she know it was
a racist slur play on words, and if she did did she think it was funny, or was
she unaware of the double entrendre (as I said, I didn't even realize it was a
racist slur until guren pointed it out, but then again, I didn't post it, and
I'm more inclined to think if she posted it, she knew) - so I'm with you -
let's wait to hear her side of it.
>>NO WAY that was not meant to be a racial slur.
>Pearl Harbor day? "Nip" in the air? You can't say NO WAY.
HOLD ON! Go back and read what I wrote. I said: "no way that was NOT meant to
be a racial slur". I'm agreeing with you. My fault for using the double
negative I guess.....(but you did read it too quickly)
>Do you think there's less hate in the world in 2003 than there was in 2002,
>or 2000, or 1995.........?
>I don't.
I agree...there's not. HOWEVER, that being said - certain racial slurs that
were more prevalent in the 40's and 50's are no longer in our vocabulary or in
people's minds. Of course, they've been replaced by new ones....hatred in the
abstract does of course live on.
>
>HOLD ON! Go back and read what I wrote. I said: "no way that was NOT meant to

You're right...I apologize. The double negative did throw me. This is a very
sensitive topic to me personally. I haven't been called a "nip" in a very long
time. I saw it and I nearly threw up. That "haiku" is indefensible.
Sorry, you cannot say 100% sure, because you didn't write it or speak to the
person that did. A three line poem with the words "Pearl Harbor" and "nip" is
NOT an unfortunate mistake. If she wants to come back here and explain herself,
fine. Until then, it stands as an INEXCUSABLE racial slur on a very difficult
day for Japanese-Americans. I was sickened to see it.

I completely agree.
And I hope this is an eye-opener to those (and it's been done here before) who
think something shouldn't offend anyone else because it isn't offensive to
them, and therefore it's the problem of the offended for being "so sensitive" -
that the judge of whether or not something is offensive is not YOU (the person
posting it), but the person who is or will be offended when reading it.
Debby
I am aware that "nip" is a derogatory term, but its use in this haiku is
as a pun, not a slur. I was married to a Japanese, have lived in Japan
and Korea, speak Japanese, studied Japanese culture and have
half-Japanese children, and would never intentionally do or say anything
racist. I am also of the opinion that words like "nip" and "gook" are
more indicative of the stupidity of Americans than slurs against
Japanese or Koreans. The Japanese word for Japan is "nippon" and the
Korean word for American is "migook". Imagine the GI in Korea with kids
yelling "migook" and thinking that somehow they must be speaking English
and saying "me gook"..., kind of like how all the aliens in Star Trek
speak English...
Going back to the haiku, I simply believe that it is making brilliant
fun of Americans, not the Japanese, by using this beautiful Japanese
poetic form to deliver the joke. To me, it is the Japanese who are
coming out on top in this, not the butt of it. It is actually quite a
clever use of words and sounds ("summer sailors shiver") and imagery,
and is an excellent example of the haiku form, incidentally. The image
I get is of an unprepared military enjoying the nice weather and relaxed
atmosphere of Hawaii, and all of a sudden, life literally turns upside
down, hot is cold, etc. It is making no moral judgements here about the
attack. A haiku is meant to convey a vivid image with a punchline to
make the reader think, and this one does so in a humorous way. Because
of the setup and then the clever pun (and you don't realize it is a joke
*until* the pun comes), one is more likely to get a groan from the word
"nip" than offense. Anyway, that's how I see it.
Again, I apologize if it offends, but honestly, I have told this to
dozens of Japanese and Japanese-American friends, and they have all
thought it was funny and clever.

Your explanation and apology are appreciated. I hope you understand that the
way you posted it, it came across as a crass racist joke (Yes I understood that
it was a joke. No, I absolutely did not find it funny). As an Asian-American, I
see the word "nip" not as irony or a pun, but as a slam. 99% of the time it's
meant that way. Anyway, thank you for explaining yourself. It goes a long way
towards restoring civility around here, as opposed to those here who do nothing

Well I appreciate the civility here, too, and allowing me to explain
myself before getting too upset. When I was a child, every time I said
the phrase "nip in the air" (before I even saw the haiku), I used to
feel guilty using it!
I think my children were fortunate to have grown up in El Cerrito, CA,
where the population was about 40% white, 40% asian and 20% black. Most
of their friends were half-Japanese too! I asked them if anyone had
ever called them names, and they said maybe once. So perhaps we are
less sensitized to that word, having grown up with diversity. At their
pre-school, a black woman once objected to these flash cards we had,
because among the various words, they had "boy" and "girl" and the
little boy in the picture happened to be black, so she thought it was
racist to show a black kid with the word "boy"... So I think Lindsay
was right, that there are gray areas...
Perhaps the name is Phillipino?
In any case I'm looking forward to Mr. Haliczer's adultishness
contributions!
