Remember.....stay close to your friend, but closer to your enemies.
Me, I never let a clown out of my sight (not even Twee-Twee at our Farmer's
Market).
So, with that in mind, I share this with you:

http://u.redlandsdailyfacts.com/Stories/0,1413,217~24270~1981469,00.html

An interview with David Crosby
By Sandy Wells
Staff Writer

In the '80s, Crosby crashed. He had pushed friends aside and landed in a
Dallas jail cell for a drug-related arrest on weapons possession charges.

He suffered a serious motorcycle accident, permanently dam aging his
shoulder and ankle and then lost his home to fore closure after it was
damaged in the 1994 Los Angeles earth quake. By 1995 Crosby was experiencing
terminal liver fail ure, yet the tide would turn again.

Crosby's wife Jan, had a son, Django, and James Raymond, his son from a
brief relation ship in the '60s discovered Crosby was his father and came
into the picture. Crosby also had a successful liver trans plant.

Crosby and his current band, CPR, will be performing at Cal tech in Pasadena
tonight. The group has had three jazz spiked rock releases, including 2001's
"Just Like Gravity,'' and con sists of Crosby, vocalist and guitarist Jeff
Prevar (Rickie Lee Jones, Ray Charles, Bonnie Raitt) and Crosby's son,
vocalist and keyboardist James Ray mond (Oleta Adams, Spice Girls).

Crosby took some time to talk to U:

Q. Your music has provided social commentary and sparked activism, how
important is that today?

A. It's very important. I think it's part of our jobs. I think our main job
is to entertain you, but I think also we're a little bit of the town crier
thing and the troubadour thing, those are still part of our jobs. We're
supposed to reflect what's going on around us and be truthful, have good
commentary on what's going on around us.

I think that's part of what we're supposed to do, but I don't think it's the
main thing. Our main job is to help you feel things and I think it's good
for us to react to the world around us, give the voice.

Q. How do you keep going de spite the tragedy in your life?

A. Two things. My family and loving making music, loving songs. I really
love them.

Q. What do you like to do with your family?

A. I play with my boy and I go sailing. Let's see, what did I do yesterday?
I went riding with my wife on her horses, and then Django and I went rock
hunting. We go out in the riv erbeds and hunt for rocks, real ly beautiful
ones, and then we build them into things. It's a great thing to do with your
son, believe me, because you get dirty and you can yell.

Q. Was music a part of your childhood?

A. I got started very young. My family used to play and sing around the
fireplace and so I came to it very young. I started singing harmonies, they
tell me, when I was about 6 years old.

Q. What kind of education did you have?

A. I went to some excellent schools around here and then I got through one
year of Santa Barbara City College. Then I couldn't stand it anymore, I had
to be out entertaining. So I took off on my own and started going to
coffeehouses and that was that.

I think I've always wanted to play music. There are a couple of other things
that I really ad mire that I think I would like. Teaching I would enjoy
because it's really fun to spark a kid's mind.

Q. How do you write your mu sic?

A. It's the most haphazard process. There's no control over it at all, none.
The words and the music just come to me and I'm grateful and I write them
down as quickly as I can and make them into songs. But I really have no
control over the pro cess at all.

Q. To what do you attribute your staying power?

A. I think it has to do with the songs. I think that we write songs that are
actually about something. You hear our songs 30 years later the song still
makes you feel something. That's because it's an actual re al song and it's
about some thing real.

I think if we had just written the kind of stuff that they write these days,
nobody would re member us six months later.

Q. What do you think of today's music scene?

A. I think most of all it's just fake constructions, really pol ished for
the pop hit, there's no content whatsoever. It's kind of like taking a
birdbath. It doesn't satisfy me. It might be good for dancing to, but I like
content, I like it to be about something.

Q. How do you take care of your wild hair?

A. I don't do anything to it. I used to dye it to keep it brown so I'd look
younger, but I gave up on that. I just wash it, wash it lot. You should see
my son's hair, he's the one with the great hair. He has the most beautiful
hair you've ever seen in your life.

Q. What does the future hold for you?

A. I just am now finishing a brand new Crosby/Nash record. We haven't done
one since the '70s. We went in to cut 10 things and we cut 20, so I think
there's going to be two new Crosby/Nash albums coming out in over the next
six months.

Q. What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

A. Do it because you love it. Don't expect to make a living at it, very few
people do.

Seems like he'd have to have had a permit for the gun, if he was travelling
with it. The knives thing? Lots of folks carry knives.

I sometimes carry a knife...not a gun (those just give me the
heebie-jeebies), but a knife.
Sometimes a few at a time, well hidden and well placed.
I usually reserve that for when I know I'm gonna be in places that might be
a bit dodgy. Needless to say, not at school...and seldom in our sleepy
little town. I've spent a good amount of time learning how to wield them and
how to throw the blade. I have to say that, through the magic of garage
sales, I've come across some pretty interesting knives ~ various
switchblades and such...you could slice your thumb off with them if you
don't know what you're doing. And I better stop now...I'm starting to feel
like this is being written by Travis from TAXI DRIVER...

That said, I doubt (and pray) that I'd never have to use it for any reason
other than cutting open a CD wrapper...but I guess it probably gives me a
(false) added sense of security.
And, shoot, I like to think I'm a peace loving man...

I dunno...isn't a knife something of an improvement, given Crosby's past?
Last time he was arrested (during his free-basing days), I thought he was
caught with a gun.
I think this is what really made me despise him ~ when asked why he had a
gun, Crosby is reported to have said, "John Lennon."
And that's where my stomach turned.
As if he were ever even in the same league as Lennon.....

Just because you're peaceful doesn't mean you shouldn't defend yourself.
Maybe he has good reasons to have weapons. Maybe he can't afford a
bodyguard. But why he'd need either, I dunno.
Then again, maybe he's just paranoid?

I never took it like he thought he was in the same league. I just think he
saw what kind of psychos are out there. Him being a public figure, I'd
imagine sometimes it's natural to feel like a target. And if he was hooked
on coke at the time, he was probably more paranoid than a person should be
....

Well, he did have a .45 caliber handgun, along with the knife and the pot,
when he was arrested.

Fox News, which I normally don't care for, had the catchiest headline on the
story: "Crosby, Knives, Stash and Gun."

As crazy as it sounds, that was something to get pretty worked up about back
when he wrote that song. Choosing to cut or not during those years meant
just about everything. I remember when I first heard that song, it really
said everything in that opening lyric. Now what that fat fuck's supposedly
all about today, I couldn't tell ya!

And as far as knives go, I'd carry one too if I lived anywhere near where
you used to! A nice backup is a bottle opener depended from a small loop of
bread bag wire twisted through the top eyelace of your boot. If you have
high boots and long jeans no one can see it. I'm a peace lover but when
you're out in deep rural areas or poor urban ones, leaving your entire fate
up to faith & good will is just plain stupid.

Fortunately, the only time I need to haunt such areas now is when I'm at
work.
Unfortunately, I think it'd be frowned upon if I went armed with blades of
all sorts to an elementary school site (and understandably so)...
