Interesting dilemma for BoDeans fans in the Milwaukee area on a recent Friday night. At the Northern Lights Theatre in Potawatomi Casino, a fan could pay $50 or more for a ticket to see the current incarnation of the band, as lead by Kurt Neumann, on the first of a two-night stand. Less than 14 miles away, just over the line in Waukesha County, birthplace of the BoDeans, that same fan could see a free show by the other founding member, with his current band, at the Saloon on Calhoun with Bacon. (Yep, that’s really the name!)

Not having an extra $50 after all my Christmas shopping, I chose the second option – and felt I easily got more than $50 worth of show in over three hours with the four-piece Sam Llanas Band. More than 25 songs, not counting the snippets woven in as medleys. A BoDeans fan from the ‘90s would have recognized many of them: “Looking for Me Somewhere,” “Misery/Sylvia,” “Fadeaway,” “She’s a Runaway,” “True Devotion,” “Two Souls” “617,” “Still the Night” – 2 arrangements!, “Feed the Fire” “Naked” (with a lovely bit of “Rickshaw Riding” added), “Heart of a Miracle,” “Black, White, & Blood Red,” “Say About Love” and of course, “Closer to Free”.

Indeed, much if not most of the crowd packed into the spacious room was more familiar with that material than with the songs Sam has recorded on his own; you could tell by the way they sang along.

That didn’t stop them from dancing enthusiastically to the other songs, or then lining up to buy “Return of the Goya Part 2” – Sam’s new release – at the break. It was a short break, though, because Sam clearly had a lot more songs he wanted to share. He played past midnight, after starting at 8:30. We got a goodly number of songs from Goyas 1 & 2: “Recipe,” “Follow Your Heart” “Beep, Beep,” “Wake Up, ” “Doncha Just Know,” “Long Way Home” and “Rio” – as well as others from earlier release: “The Best I Can” “Shyne” “Déjà vu” “Cold n’ Clean”.

With Matt Turner on bass, Matt Rhyner on drums, and Sean Williamson on lead guitar backing him, Sam & the band sounded great, a fun finish to 2018. And Goya 2 is a great way to kick off a brand new year. Cheers!
