Hello,
My friend gave me a tape of Parklife and now I would like to buy a CD of
Blur, so I would like to ask all of you that have heard both: which
albums is better? What are the similarities and differences between the
two?

I would also like to ask what singles they have released that have songs
unavailable on either of these two albums.

But there are FOUR Blur albums - not just two!

There are four albums: Leisure, Moddern Life is Rubbish, Parklife and The
Great Escape. They're all really good! For more info, e-mail me:

Although both albums are good. Parklife is by far the better
album if not for the title track alone.

I think The Great Escape is a great Lp BUT (and I'm
not saying this is an original thought or anything)
it suffers from trying too hard to be Parklife part
2. It doesn't really need the sea shanties at the
end or the Ken Livingstone in place of Phil
Daniels. And why does The Universal have so many
choruses (a bit rubbish) and so few verses
(brilliant).

Thanks to the guy in Denmark who agreed with me.

I think MODERN LIFE IS RUBBISH is the best, followed by Parklife,
then Leisure and the Great Escape.
So buy MLIR NOW!!!! It is essential listening to anyone with taste!!! :-)
And if you live in England, it's on cd for 5.99 in Our Price!!

Parklife is better. It is the apotheosis of all that Blur
is. In fact, I fear they may never top it.

Normally I like the album I got first by a band. I bought Parklife
first, but I really think that TGE is better. It is, in a way,
Parklife 2, but more complex. Modern Life Is Rubbish is great too.

> Dave CheseldineThe Great Escape was just a fill in album in Blurs career. The next
album due for release Aug/Sep will be far more superior to Parklife. In
my own opinion Modern Life is the best album to date, and in this
statement I am not alone ! All true Blur fans know that.
As for The Universal, that song is fucking beautiful. All I have to say

I believe that the Great Escape is Blur's finest hour. Don't get me
wrong, Parklife is an excellent albulm with its instantly recognizabe
and glorious hooks and choruses. But the Great Escape is truly Blur's
finest hour. The songs are so layered and magnificent on so many
layers. Not to mention it shows of Graham Coxon's most brilliant
guitar work to date. Believe me, the Great Escape is an albulm that
Blur fans, music critics, and other musicians will say was a turning
point for them and for pop music at the time. Come on, listen to
Mr.Robinson's Quango, it's fucking brilliant.

Well that's my two sense.

in my opinion parklife ruled, because the album had great continuity...
a bunch of good songs in a row. great escape's got about 7 REAL good
songs, a few good songs... and, don't flame, a bad song or two...

Really?? I and a some of my blur liking friends put TGE as the worst
album they've done. Parklife is the best, followed by MLIR and Leisure.
I do agree that there are some good songs on TGE (Mr. Robinsons Quango
is superb) but there are some not so good songs. I've never heard a bad
blur song though.

That's my 2 cents worth.

The great debate continues. Parklife or the Great Escape. Well, I think
that all of you that responded to this original question of which album is
better are starting in the wrong place. As far as I'm concerned neither
Parklife or The Great Escape hold a candle to the older, purer sounds of
Modern Life is Rubbish or Leisure. If you are looking to engulf yourself
into the great wide world of Blur, wouldn't it make sense to find out
where the pop-y, energentic, more mainstream sounds of Blur came from?
Now please don't think that I don't like Parklife or the Great Escape
(Parklife is the better of the two) I just want to remind everyone out
there that Blur was The epitomy of Brit-Pop before Brit-Pop became a
household name. ian wrote: > In

Although I agree with you that I don't consider TGE to be Blur's greatest
album and that I have yet to hear a bad Blur song, I disagree that
Leisure comes before The Great Escape. Granted, Leisure is good pop, but
only that. Leisure is good to listen to when you're at a party and
conversing (or drunk) or when you just want some background music while
you read, work, etc...TGE and the other two are worthy of sitting down
and having a good listen whenever you plunk them into the stereo.

And that, o my brothers, is *my* tuppence worth.

The definitive order for Blur albums is as follows:
1. The Great Escape
2. Modern Life Is Rubbish
3. Parklife
4. Leisure
This has been scientifically proven by the Pond's Institute, one of
Australia's foremost research institutions.

We shouldn't put down TGE. It is excellent. However Parklife is the
type of record that comes alond once a generation. Parklife is so good
that it can't be topped. There is nothing better than perfect; and
Parklife is perfect. Next comes in respective order: TGE, MLIR, and
Leisure. And that, my freinds, is my 2 cents worth.

TGE is by FAAAAAAR the best c.d. I don't like some of the songs I.E.
the one after park life. Parklife does pertain some good songs. boys
and girls, parklife, badhead just to name a few. my least fave on TGE
is entertain me, it is still a good song but not as good in a
retrospect to the other songs.

Actually, Blur (great as they are) stands in line with the rest for the
title "Epitome of Brit Pop." Do The Beatles ring a bell?

Michelle Cain

I think:

1. MLIR
=2. parklife and leisure
4. TGE

I always change my mind about the middle two, but although TGE is a
lovely album, and I don't dislike any songs, I just don't very much like
the first few songs either. Up until The Universal, it's not all that
brilliant, but that song, Mr Robinson's and HTOC are astounding, as are
the last few songs.

I just think although there are some masterpieces on TGE, not every song
is up to Blur's ever so high standard, as they are on Parklife and Modern
Life (I like the feel of leisure, even though the songs aren't all strokes
of genius, are all very nice.)

Yes, that is correct. Pond's Institute is one of Australia's foremost
research institutions. However the premier research institute in
Australia is- Cusson's. :-)
And according to their research (and my own personal choice) the Blur
album order goes as follows......
1. Modern Life Is Rubbish
2. The Great Escape
3. Parklife
4. Leisure
Nearly- but not quite!!! ;-)

TGE is the better of the two albums beecause it maintains the best balance
of great guitar work, interesting baselines, and keyboards. Parklife was
wonderful, but TGE is the best British album of the 90's,

I'm sure it's been commented before, but I think Great Escape has a very
unique track to anything I've ever heard before: Fade Away. Very unique
combination of reggae-style horns with a bizarre chord progression: C
major to F# minor.

I must say though that Parklife is a masterpiece both in its individual
songs, as well as the way it fits together. End of a Century and This is
a Low are too powerful to be ignored, and the rest of the album is too
solid. Great Escape has some weaker tracks, such as Top Man.

I will venture to say that Modern Life is Rubbish is better than Great
Escape as well. But Great Escape is still a fine album.

still haven't got the hang of this....anyway, I'd just
like to say that the great escape is far superior to parklife,
both musically and lyrically. I like top man very catchy, and
great lyrics, a confused hooligan....again very damon based..

so if anyone wants to argue parklife v great escape......

I really do like GE alot, but Parklife is far too perfect. The track
sequence of the album itself makes it similar to an "abbey road". Great
Escape feels a little more thrown together.

Also, the final track (before the goof off) "This is A Low" is the most
powerful song to end an album. I don't feel the same about the Yuko &
Hiro, or the entire Ernold Same ensemble.

Modern Life demonstrated Blur could innovate.
Great Escape shows that Blur can maintain.
But Parklife shows that Blur is brilliant.

Jeff
