Sorry if I'm an album behind but I'm really curious to know if anyone
has an idea about the origin of the word "Beetlebum". The lyrics
indicate that it is probably a name for a loved one but has anyone read
in an interview or anything where Damon might have derived it from?

I've read similar things myself, but I have my own theory that it comes
from an old Spike Jones novelty song of the same name from the 1950s or so
about a racehorse who always comes in last. I've never read anything to
confirm or deny this. I'd be curious to know if there's any merit to it.

That's really interesting. That track by Spike Jones actually refers to a
Professor
Feetlebaum which was a character created by "Doodles" Weaver for the band.
Weaver later had a TV show in the 70's where he resurrected the character and
there was an LP recorded in 1974 called "Feetlebaum Returns" (it says here).
The ending refrain was
actually used on a lot of Spike Jones tracks and was actually something of a
trademark. I saw some old footage once on a late 50's TV show. They had some
bizarre film of an
extremely deformed mule named Feetlebaum which they had intercut with some
horse
racing footage and added some wacky commentary on top.

There was also a British band in the early 80's called Jesus Couldn't Drum who
had a
track called "Beetlebum" on their first LP which used the Spike Jones refrain.

Damon said at an MTV interview that it's a made up word that describes a
feeling he has... a "sleepy and very sexy feeling". So that's that.

My dad (not a blur fan, he's never heard of them)
uses beetlebum to refer in an affectionate way to
lazy, sleep people. So it isn't a recently made up word.

I would have to say it's a song about heroin. JUST KIDDING! It kinda sounds
like it's about Oasis.

My mom used the phrase - and here comes old beetle bum - for whoever was coming last and that was in the early 60's when I first remember hearing it
