I am looking for the lyrics to The Old Man in The Shanty. I have the
song, but there are a few words that I cannot understand.
Thank you.

I have the Old Man In The Shanty sung by The Chapmans off their 2001
Pinecastle Records (PRC 1113) "Follow Me" CD. I can't make all the
words out. This is the best I can do.

Old Man in the Shanty
(John Green)

Up the road that leads by Mission Hollow
Stands a shanty in a field there all alone
Worn out burlap sack hanging on the window
And the smoke from an old wood burning stove
In the shanty lives an old man from nowhere
Where ??? ever knew his grief
Moma said he was a drunkard in her childhood
She wished that he'd just pack his things and leave

Don't you go near the shanty son the old man's got a gun
And when he gets to drinking he'll shoot it just for fun
But they never knew that I was the old man's only friend
The old man in the shanty how I still remember him

Sunday mornings I'd slip out of my window
He'd be waiting in the shanty by the door
A plate of home made bread bacon eggs and butter
That he'd made on his old wood burning stove
Well he told me how he came about living there
How his family had died that awful day
Now the only thing he turned to was the bottle
Ever sense has he left the bottle lay

Don't you go near the shanty son the old man's got a gun
And when he gets to drinking he'll shoot it just for fun
But they never knew that I was the old man's only friend
The old man in the shanty how I still remember him

Well today was the last time that I saw him
So I ??? the bottle ???
With a dying breath he turned up to the ceiling
Said God forgive me for all that I have done
Well I laid him in the place that he'd shown me
Said a prayer sang a song as I done
No-one knew what had happen to the stranger
They thought that he'd just packed his things and gone

Don't you go near the shanty son the old man's got a gun
And when he gets to drinking he'll shoot it just for fun
But they never knew that I was the old man's only friend
The old man in the shanty how I still remember him
He's just an old man in the shanty how I still remember him

If you figure out the words, please post them; I would like to do this
song too.

Where the only thing he ever knew was grief

So I guess that old bottle finally won

Said a prayer and sang a song as I dug

Old Man in the Shanty
(John “Buckwheat” Green) – Performed by Lonesome River Band (Key of A) – 3 chords

Up the road that leads by Mission Hollow
Stands a shanty in a field there all alone
Worn out burlap sacks a hanging over the window
And the smoke from an old wood burning stove
In the shanty lives an old man from nowhere
Where the only name I ever knew was Reed
Momma said he was a drunkard in her childhood
She wished that he'd just pack his things and leave

CHORUS:
Don't you go near the shanty son the old man's got a gun
And when he gets to drinking he'll shoot it just for fun
But they never knew that I was the old man's only friend
The old man in the shanty how I still remember him

INSTRUMENTAL

Sunday mornings I would sneak out of my window
He'd be waiting in the shanty by the door
Plate of bacon, eggs and home made bread and butter
That he'd made for me on that old wood burning stove
And he told me how he came about living there
How his family had died that awful day
Now the only thing he turned to was his bottle
Ever sense has he left the bottle lay

CHORUS

INSTRUMENTAL

Yesterday was the last time that I saw him
Oh I guess that ole bottle finally won
With a dying breath he looked up towards the ceiling
Said God forgive me for all that I have done
Well I buried him in the place that he'd shown me
I Said a prayer, sang a song as I dug
No-one ever knew or realized what had happened
They thought the old man had finally up and gone

CHORUS:

Couple other errors:

HIS Childhood not her’s

Bacon, eggs, homemade bread & butter. Homemade inserted in wrong part of sentence.

But NOBODY ever knew.....

SNEAK out of window not slip

These are smal errors but makes difference when playing it bluegrass style.

Best recording is Lonesome River Band with Sammy Shelor.

Key of A is original recording
