There is a song that New Grass done called Cold Sailor (I think.)

It when something like:

I'm just a cold sailor standing here alone
Cold sailor wishing I were home
A cold sailor wont you take me in
If you'll make me some supper I'll tell you were I've been.

The old tape I had was never real good and I has never able to figure
out the words.

Any one know the song I'm thing of? Please post the lyrics.

The place to start is always Bruno Zvolensky's New Grass Revival
Songbook (http://web.viapvt.sk/zvolensky/default.htm), but it does not
have the lyrics to this particular song.

Cold Sailor is on the first New Grass Revival album, released as
Starday/King 482 498 in 73, and reissued as Today's Bluegrass by
Hollywood/IMG 307 in Aug 94, and still available. The members of the
band at that time were Sam Bush, Courtney Johnson, Curtis Burch and Ebo
Walker (Harry L Shelor Jr). There are no credits give for the composer
in my skimpy liner notes, but it was not by one of the band members.

Here are the lyrics as best I could figure out. Never could figure out
the words in parentheses, even when slowed down.

I have been to canyons
where the streetlights freeze your soul
and a single night is longer
than six months at the pole.

Where man is (hard to seizes up????)
when the sirens call
and pass the (????) those twisted shapes
along the hollow walls

Chorus:
I'm just a cold saior, standing here alone
A cold sailor, wishing I was home
A cold sailor, won't you take me in
If you'll give me some supper, I'll tell you where I've been.

For I have stood the night watch
in a thousand native towns
and turned at every footstep
and challanged every sound.

And (crossed?) myself in summer storms
when rain came down so fast
that you couldn't see the hatred
in the faces rushing past

Chorus

I have been inside the caves
where lonely people go
to dream the technicolor dreams
that lonely people know.

And one, for an instance
I glimpsed a paradise
of someone who was not afraid,
but then she closed her eyes

Chorus

Ah, yes! That song goes back aways. 1972 as I recall (I'm old you know).
Sam Bush, Courtney Johnson, and Ebo Walker had just split off from Lonnie
Pierce and the Bluegrass Alliance to form the "New Grass Revival" with
Curtis Burch (don't feel too sad for Lonnie, he wound up with Garland
Shupping on banjo, Chuck Nation on mandolin and fiddle, and Dan Crurry on
guitar and Steve Maxwell on bass). This was long before John Cowan arrived.
This album was on the Starday label.

I don't know if I remember all the words correctly, but this is fairly
close.

COLD SAILOR

I have been the canyons where the street lights freeze your soul,
And a single night is longer than 6 months at the pole.
Where man gets hard and seizes up when the silence calls,
And passes hard those twisted shapes along the hollow walls

Chorus
I'm just a cold sailor, standing here alone
A cold sailor, wishing I was Home
A cold sailor, want you take me in,
If you'll give me some supper
I'll tell you where I've been

Oh I have stood the night watch in a thousand navy towns
And turned at every footstep, and challenged every sound
And crossed myself in summer storms where the rain came down so fast,
That you couldn't see the hatred in the faces rushing passed.

I have been inside the cave where lonely people go,
To dream the technicolor dreams that lonely people know
And once for an instant, I glimpsed the paradise
Of someone who was not afraid but then she closed her eyes

I hope this helps, We did this song a few years ago and speeded it up some
and added more drive but it is a good song. By the way, it was written
Steve Brines and Jim Smoak. CU Mitch

The proper link is:
http://web.viapvt.sk/zvolensky/index/home/home.html
it redirects itself to:
http://www.bluegrass.sk/zvonky
the english page address is:
http://www.bluegrass.sk/zvonky/u_index.html
if you click on archives, then tabs, then BJO, you'll find a whole
bunch of banjo tablatures lifted from Phillip Mann's page including a
bunch of my own. Don't waste your time, these tabs fail to load in
Tabrite. The proper tabs are available from
http://www.bluegrassbanjo.org
or the website below.

Regarding these lines referenced below:

"Where man gets hard and seizes up when the silence calls,
And passes hard those twisted shapes along the hollow walls"

I am wondering if it isn't something like this:
"Where man's heart seizes up when the sirens call,
And passes ???? those twisted shapes along the hollow walls"

Perhaps twisted shapes referring to the sirens?
