According to Geezer Butler on the "Black Sabbath Story, Vol. 1", NIB is what they
said Bill Ward's beard looked like ("It looks like a pen nib" (the end of those pens
you need to dip into an inkwell)). All these years I've been calling it N.I.B (spelling
it out), but it's really just NIB, one word...

N.I.B. never stood for anything.
on the black sabbath story vol. 1,geezer
tells how they were stuck for a name
and named the song nib because bill ward's beard
resembled a pen nib. the periods are there
to throw us off!

That is what I thought, I just sounded so damn rediculus that I did
not want to go out on a limb and post that. I have also heard that it
stood for Nativity In Black. (Someone just email me on this one).

No it doesn't. They named it NIB because bill wards beard looked like a
pen 'nib'.

Ok, who knows the significance of Nativity In Black, then? It does appear
to be the name of some BS CD, e.g., "Nativity In Black (Sampler)"

According to the BS Faq, the song N.I.B. deals with the following:

N.I.B.:
The devil fells in love with a human and becomes a total different
person. The title has nothing to do with the content of the song.
--
Bacchus, n.:
A convenient deity invented by the ancients as an excuse for
getting drunk.
-- Ambrose Bierce, "The Devil's Dictionary"

Listen to Live Evil. Dio calls it Nativity in Black. That's
official-enough for me. It might not be the initial meaning, but I'd
call it an acceptable one.

I've never heard the phrase "Nativity In Black" until this tribute album came out
and I've been listening to Sabbath since 1983. Where is your proof that N.I.B
stands for "Nativity In Black"? According to Geezer Butler in "The Black
Sabbath Story, Vol. 2" it doesn't stand for anything, it's what the group called
Bill Ward's beard.

journalist in 1970, but the band called the song NIB after Bill Ward's
chin. It apparently looked like the nib of a fountain pen with the
beard he had at the time.

Later on (about 1974) I think, they set fire to his beard.

Bill commented that it was the 'best grass I have ever tasted'.

Hey, way out maaaan.

Oh boy, here we go again...

WATCH the video "The Black Sabbath Story Vol. 1".

Geezer in the flesh tells you that it was because of Ward's
beard. They just put those periods in to confuse fans like us!
It was just a rumor from fans that it stood for "Nativity in Black" or
"Necromancy in Black" or whatever.
