First, how come "Evil Woman" is not on the U.S. version of _Black
Sabbath_? I've heard that the band is not really too fond of the song,
but I doubt that would be reason enough. Anyway, I've always wondered
about that.

Second, why is there a black rectangle in the upper right-hand
corner of the album cover?? Is something being blacked out?? It looks
like the rectangle might be covering something up on or in a tree????

Thanks!

Note:
1. "Evil Woman" was originally released on the album "Crow Music" and
later as a single by the group Crow. It is also available on the "Best Of
Crow" cd.

There was the Vertigo eropeain record release and the Warner Brothers, USA
. Why is Evil Woman not on the US release? I don't know.

Evil Woman (3:22)
(By Wiegand, Wiegand, Waggoner)

I see a look of evil in your eyes
You've been filling me all full of lies
Sorrow will not change your shameful deed
You will bear someone else's bitter seed

Evil woman don't you play your game with me
Evil woman don't you play your game with me

Now I know just what your looking for
You want me to claim this child you bore *1
Well you know that it was he not me
And you know the way it's got to be

Evil woman don't you play your game with me
Evil woman don't you play your game with
Evil woman don't you play your game with me
Evil woman don't you play your game with me

Wickedness lies in your moistened lips
Your body moves just like the crack of a whip
Black cat sleeps on top of your stain(ed) bed,
Your true wish that you could see me dead

Evil woman don't you play your games with me
Evil woman don't you play your games with me
Evil woman don't you play your games with me
Evil woman don't you play your games with me
Evil woman don't you play your

I had never heard of the song Evil Woman. When I was in the Navy (1982) and our
ship pulled into the Phillipines. There was a bar in Olongopo that had a
jukebox with the song Evil Woman by Black Sabbath. I played it and waited
several hours to hear it. I was liking it and had to wait almost 15 years in
order to hear it again.

I heard it for the first time about 2 years ago.

What's blacked out is the "Vertigo" (striped conical) symbol. Presumably
because the album appeared on a different label in the States.

My reference for this is the Vertigo cassette (Australian) - which features
Evil woman, but not Wicked World.

Crow, the band that originally recorded this song, had a big hit with
it in the US just before Black Sabbath released it here in Europe.

Now there are two explanations, none of which I am able to verify,
as to why Warner didn't put it on the US release.
1. Warner couldn't because of contractual reasons. That means
Warner had something to do with Crow. The album on which
Crow released Evil Woman was called Crow Music, which was
released on the Amaret record label. I fail to see the
connection between Warner and Amaret, but that's just me.
2. The song was a BIG hit for Crow so Warner didn't put it
on the US release just because of that. This was to protect
the album from going belly up. Apparently they thought
people weren't going to buy this album because BS would
look like phoneys that would like to cash in on the
succes of Crow.

I hope some of the more serious Sab-a-holics can clarify this.

a third explanation I just found on the internet is:
Black Sabbath couldn't get a copyright release from Crow.
So they couldn't put Evil Woman on the album in the US...
why it was possible in Europe I don't know, probably
because Crow could still make some money out of it.
It is said that their US hit song didn't catch on here.

All in all, I think this is the most plausible.

The european version doesn't have anything blacked out. And it doesn't have
Vertigo symbol either (I'm talking about Castle CD).

BTW, nice catch. I never noticed it before about WB CD.
