The meaning of 'E5150' is this: It's "EVIL", with "E" at the beginning
and "VIL" spelled out as Arabic equivalents to Roman numerals: 5 - 1 - 50.
Mike says that Bill Ward told him this about ten years ago. It makes
sense.
It's too bad that Sabbath didn't know more about Roman numerals:
although this isn't generally known, the letter "E" _was_ actually
sometimes used by the Romans to stand for the number 250. Thus they
_could_ have replaced all four letters in "EVIL", and come up with the
title "2505150". This would have been cool but also would've been a big
hassle for anybody having the phone number 250-5150.
Now, if we could only figure out what Dio is _saying_ in 'E5150'...

Rob,
from my understanding, E5150 is a distress code used by police in Southern
California to mean "a criminally insane person wandering the area". Hence the
Van Halen 5150 album.

Hmmm. I wonder why Eddie Van Halen has a studio and an album named 5150?
And here's me, all this time, thinking it was played on a Gibson E5-150. :) (or
something). Seriously though: reading these two explanations, who's to say the
Sabs didn't consider both? The double edged name thing is the sort of thing
they'd do (cf. Cross Purposes)

I'm not sure/clear about the Sabbath explanation for 5150, but Van Halen
used it because it is a code used by police in the US to describe a
situation where there is an emotionally disturbed/violent person causing
problems (something along those lines). Van Halen used these not so subtle
ablum titles up until Balance - 5150, OU812, _F_or _U_nlawful _C_arnal
_K_nowledge.

If you have a vinyl copy of Mob Rules then you can try this for yourself.
As far as I remember, if you play E5150 at 45 rpm, you can easily make
out what Ronnie Dio says......
Its years since I did this but its something like
You!
You are fortunate!
You are fortunate!
BTW thats forwards not backwards. No backwards messages on Sabs albums.

Or rather, what it DOESN'T stand for. :)
: one for you. What does S.A.T.O. mean? Also, in Megalomania what does Ozzy
: say in a real menacing tone in two parts of the song? One sounds like
: "Stig me" and the other sounds like "Suck me" or "fuck me".
I heard in an interview that SATO was named after different people
that were in the studio at the time ("O", I guess, has to be "Ozzy" or
"Osbourne"...not sure about the rest of the letters, though.)
I always heard those other lines as "Stick Me" and "Fuck Me"
Bill
bzzt. It stands for "Sailing Across the Ocean." (read it in an
Ozzy interview; makes sense if you look at the lyrics, too).

Go check out Joe Siegler's Black Sabbath homepage
(http://www.apogee1.com/sabbath/). It has all Sabbath lyrics except for
"Evil Woman".
Anyway, the words are "sting me" and "suck me".
