Nah... I'd even pick IX Equilibrium over DB. There were lots of good albums -
Abigor's latest, Satyricon's, Immortal's, Marduk's,...

Dream Theater's latest should probably take this place.

Agreed.

Not for me. If Immortal are still considered black, "At the heart of
winter" would be my favourite. However, I'm sure some can argue that
they aren't black anymore. Then, my choice for this category would be
Dodheimsgard "666 International". Even then, they aren't completely
100% black metal anymore.

But they were never gone! My choice is AGENT STEEL once again
followed by CRIMSON GLORY.
Here's my best of 1999 if you are interested.
#10:
ASHES YOU LEAVE (Croatia) - Desperate Existence {Morbid Records}
Is it surprising that this great doom metal band hails from
ex-Yugoslavia, a country tormented by years of war? The title of this
album gives the answer. Slow, melodic and melancholic metal is what
is on offer here. The atmosphere of the whole album is impregnated by
a gnawing depressive feeling. Yet, it is a beautiful album, thanks to
the heavenly voice of Dunja, the female vocalist that is,
unfortunately, not part of the band anymore and the use of flute and
violin. Clean and growling male vocals are used parsimoniously
throughout the album to create a darker mood. Again, hard to pick up
a best song here as this is the kind of album you listen in its
entirety while you lay in bed, unable to move.
# 9:
MITHOTYN (Sweden) - Gathered Around the Oaken Table {Invasion Records}
This is the third release from those Swedish metallers and it's by far
their best. They are combining the viking elements of "In The Sign Of
The Ravens" with the aggression of "King Of The Distant Forest" while
adding more melody. The combination results in a true slab of mid
tempo catchy viking metal with all the great chorus chants. There are
two singers in the band, one has a grim vocals while the other is
using a deep growl. Honestly, I don't have a favourite on this album.
I pretty much listen to the whole 55min all the way through and I
enjoy it everytime.
#8:
TRAIL OF TEARS (Norway) - Disclosure In Red {DSFA}
Some may think that this is yet another clone in the vein of THEATRE
OF TRAGEDY and TRISTANIA. Not quite. Of course, this is doom/death
metal with growling male vocals and a soprano, however, they have been
able to add some originality. The main difference with the
aforementioned bands is the fact that they are using much faster and
aggressive parts here and there that are reminescent of the Gothenburg
sound. This is extremely well done, the female voice is excellent and
the music is catchy. My copy is a cardboard promo and usually I tend
to forget any CD that comes in such sleeves. The sole fact that I'm
coming back to this album regularly is a particularly good sign.
Best tracks are "When Silence Cries...", "The Daughters of
Innocence" & "Mournful Pigeon".
# 7:
SOILWORK (Sweden) - The Chainheart Machine {Listenable Records}
This is Swedish death metal, but not of the melodic twin guitars kind
that IN FLAMES and DARK TRANQUILITY have served us so far. SOILWORK
are much more aggressive in their approach, reminding me of AT THE
GATES while the guitarwork is highly influenced by the late CARCASS.
As a matter of fact, a line in the lyrics for "Chainheart Machine"
reads "By cosmic retribution I've been sent..." and "Cosmic
Retribution" is a song on ARCH ENEMY "Black Earth", a band featuring
the Amott brothers. I don't think it's just a coincidence. Even
though they aren't as melodic as most of the Gothenburg bands, this
band have crafted songs that keeps listening. Personal favourites are
"Chainheart Machine" and "Possessing The Angels".
# 6:
STEEL PROPHET (USA) - Dark Hallucinations {Nuclear Blast}
That's the kind of CD that makes worthwhile each trip to the pawn
shop. Not only you save a couple of bucks, but you can find gems such
as this one. OK, this might not appeal to everyone, but for fans of
the genre, this is great heavy/power metal. Clean high pitch vocals,
melodic songs mixed with faster ones and great musicianship. STEEL
PROPHET are mixing influences from the likes of FATES WARNING,
QUEENRYCHE & IRON MAIDEN very effectively. You are sure to find catchy
moments on most of the tracks. The lyrics on half of the songs are
taken from Ray Bradbury's "Farenheit 451". To end in beauty, the last
tracks of the album on the digipak is an excellent cover of HELLOWEEN
"Ride The Sky". My bests are "Montag", "New Life" Scarred For Life" &
"The Apparition". It's certainly a pleasure to burn!
# 5:
IMMORTAL (Norway) - At The Heart Of Winter {Osmose Productions}
Over is the time of furious blast beasts and MORBID ANGEL worship.
IMMORTAL have decided to go for a more straightforward approach by
slowing down the pace considerably and going less technical while
going back to the roots of metal. The result is longer, averaging
7min, and catchier songs with a better production. The 80's
influence is felt throughout the album with some riffs sounding like
they've been taken out of a KREATOR or DESTRUCTION album in their
slower moments. Fortunately for IMMORTAL fans, all isn't lost of the
old days because the silly look, lyrics and song titles are still
present. Best tracks are "Tragedies Blows At The Horizon" and "At The
Heart Of Winter".
# 4:
SIGH (Japan) - Scenario IV: Dread Dreams {Cacophonous Records}
How this describe this album? SIGH have made tremendous progress
since the early days of their "Scorn Defeat" album. They have left
behind all traces of black metal, maybe except for the vocal, and
should now be considered a heavy metal band. Especially with this
release since they have, like others, gone back in time to find
inspiration for their music. Eighties riffs abounds but SIGH
differentiate themselves from other bands by incorporating into their
music samples in the form of circus music and orchestration taken from
flamenco and jazz music. Highlights are "Diabolical Suicide",
"Infernal Cries" and "In The Mind Of A Lunatic".
# 3:
AGENT STEEL (US) - Omega Conspiracy {Candlelight Records}
Wow! What a surprise! I wasn't expecting that much from this
release, after all, it was another comeback album and the band
couldn't locate the original singer, John Cyriis, whose characteristic
high pitched type of singing is hard to duplicate. How wrong I was.
Not only the new singer, Bruce Hall, is doing an excellent job, but
the songs are great. This is typical late 80's power/speed metal at
its best with fast paced drumming and gallopping riffs and high pitch
vocals. Hall can't go nearly as high as Cyriis could, but he still
manage to reach some high notes and he's able to have a harsher voice
when needs be. A great flashback from the 80s! My favourites are
"Destroy the Hush", "Know Your Master" and "Awaken the Swarm". The
swarm is upon us once again!
# 2:
OPETH (Sweden) - Still Life {Peaceville Records}
I got this CD only in December, but I can't get enough of it. Mikael
and crew have created an epic of melancholic beauty. "Still Life"
isn't as technical and therefore as progressive as their earlier
endeavours. Opeth opted for a more linear approach using more clean
vocals (which are excellent) and accoustic guitars while retaining
long song structures. Don't be put off by the word "linear" like I was
at first because, in the present case, it is an objective quality.
The songs are more catchy and the whole album is easier to get into.
The standout tracks are "The Moor", "Godhead's Lament" and "Face of
Melinda". Great stuff!
# 1:
SKYCLAD (UK) - Vintage Whine {Massacre Records}
Certainly the CD that found its way in my CD player the most often and
as such, it deserves its number one position. Although it won't be a
classic by any stretch, there are tracks that are extremely memorable
for me. The highlights of this album are "Vintage Whine", "Bury Me"
and "Little Miss Take". My first Skyclad CD and it was a very
pleasant surprise.

I have a hard time calling this (great) release "death metal".
This is the kind of CD that runs across a lot of genres.
Anyway, my choice...
Pessimist - "Blood for the Gods"
> Best Black Metal Album of 1999: Dimmu Borgir - Spiritual Black
> Dimensions
Satyricon - "Rebel Extravaganza"
or
Immortal - "At the Heart of Winter"
> Best Power Metal Album of 1999: Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black
Iced Earth - "Alive in Athens" (the 3 CD set)
> Best Thrash Metal Album of 1999: Arch Enemy - Burning Bridges
Another tough one to classify. I'm going to go with:
Hate Eternal - "Conquering The Throne"
although this is really probably death metal.
> Best Progressive Metal Album of 1999: ???
Dream Theater: "Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes from a Memory"
> Best Metal Comeback Album of 1999: Sodom - Code Red
Ok! Good CD!
new category...
Best Doom Metal Album of 1999: Morgion - "Solanari"
cheers,

Best Blackmetal album: Aborym - Kali Yuga Bizzarre
Ron Jarzombek [Spastic Ink, Watchtower] "Phhhp!"

Not your typical death metal...changes pace a
lot...whispers...thrash...but the vocals and guitars sound like death,
so I'm going with this group. To me, it's what Megadeth or Pantera would
sound like if they were a death band. If I had to do traditional

Cathedral went back to doom? They stopped being a doom band after the 'Soul

them after the Statik Majik EP.

'Caravan Beyond Redemption' isn't back to their old slow style, if
that's what you mean - it's 'groove' orientated and whatnot (some would
argue that it's still Doom, and that you don't necessarily have to play
at 1 mph to be considered 'Doom'). But you may be pleased to hear that
apparently their next album will have slow songs again.

knight, say, weighing 300 pounds with his armour and sharp blade - I would lose.
But I am evil, so I need not fight him - I hide in the shadows and shoot
poisonous darts in his back. That's why I win - because I am the evil one. Satan
is the evil one who will win, God is the strong knight who will be shot in the
back." - Count Grishnackh, from a 1993 interview
I never cared much for cathedral... I have Forest of Equilibrium.. and I
like that one..
I don't know about their later albums..
But maybe also a good choice for Doom album of 99 is the reissue of Winter's

indeed..
