You can get written confirmation from me. The woman's name was Elizabeth
Small (maiden name unknown...) and one of Billy's old partners was named
Jo(h?)n Small. Elizabeth and Jon were married at the time when Billy and
Jon were doing the Atilla thing, I believe. I think it was after Attilla
ended that Billy and Elizabeth got together. the timeline is fuzzy for
me, but I know the facts are right. Elizabeth was the inspiration for
several songs and Billy has said so. He also said he wrote a song for her
(She's Got a Way? or Always a Woman) and she responded by asking if she
got the legal rights to it as well. She was his manager for a number of
years also (ie: the boss). As far as I have ever known, he felt too
controlled and they just split. I don't know what she did after, but I'm
pretty sure she wasn't with any of Billy's musicians.

Hope that helps.
Woody.

Billy's first wife, Elizabeth, dated Billy's friend and fellow band
member Jon Small before Billy won her over.

Where can you find this in writing? There was a biography written on Billy
Joel but unfortunately I can't remember the author. I think it was simply
named Billy Joel and it was a soft-cover book. I think it was written
around the time of An Innocent Man.

From the Hassles, also the drummer for Atilla.

All of the above, plus "You're My Home", a birthday present to her.
There are probably more songs, too. For example in "Turn Around" there
is the line "Oh Eliza, got to start again"...

No, Billy's manager was not his first wife, but his first wife's
BROTHER, Charlie. The same Charlie referred to in "Great Wall of China."

Billy ended up in a legal battle with Charlie that left him just
about broke before We Didn't Start the Fire came out.

His name was Frank Webber, the company Frank Management. As a matter of fact, he
was managed by Frank Management up to KOHUEPT if I remember correctly. "Charlie"
is just a generic guy's name used in the song, like "Joe" or "Mac".

I don't know about Elizabeth (Billy's first wife) but I'd be pretty
insulted if someone wrote a song for me like: "She's Always a Woman."
(The lyrics don't say much about the woman he's talking about. Ex.:
"She steels like a thief . . .")

No perhaps about it :) If you've ever seen the PBS special "Shades Of
Grey", you see Billy doing a fairly decent Brando with those same lines
before a show to get himself pumped up.

turned Lesbian and is an active Male basher

Yes, he performed the first two verses to "Just The Way You Are" on
Sunday afternoon, January 28th, 1996. This was during his lecture
stop at Trenton State College in Trenton, New Jersey, during a question
and answer session with a little music.

The reason was that Billy was apparently inspired when I had the
opportunity to ask him a question pertaining to the interpretations
of that song. I told him and the audience that, because I am
physically challenged, my interpretations of JTWYA are a little
bit broader, to accept others for who they are inside. Billy
confirmed this interpretation by saying that he wrote the song
because we all want to be accepted for who we are. A newspaper
article confirms this statement from Billy.

Billy's wife's Elizabeth's brother was named Frank Weber, not
"Charlie"
"You could have had class
You could've been a contender,
Charlie, you shoulda looked out for me"

Isn't that a variation of the dialogue from "On The Waterfront"?

Yes, Billy's first wife, Elizabeth Weber(maiden name) Small (first
husband's last name) Joel(second husband's last name) [I don't know her
last name now] was indeed Billy's manager for a period of time. I
think from around 1975-1980. Then her brother Frank Weber became
Billy's manager. But you are right as far as I know that the Charlie
referred to in "Great Wall of China" is Frank. He just changed the
name. Perhaps in reference to On the Water Front with Marlon Brando

because in the movie he says something similar to "you could have had
class, you could have been a contender Charlie."

I don't know what ever happened to Elizabeth or Billy's step-son, Sean,
but if anyone out there has any clue as to whatever became of these two
it would be interesting to know.

Not quite right.

Billy WAS being managed by his first wife Elizabeth when they were
married.

He was then managed by Elizabeths brother FRANK Weber, who was the piece
of dirt that ripped Billy off. He is the one the song "Great Wall of
China" is referring to.

In your case, he forgot to add a line about bad spelling. :-)

She also got him out of an idiot contract he negotiated for himself and
linked him with Phil Ramone. She made him much more successful than he
was. However, she also linked Billy with her brother who than, according
to Billy, ripped him off big time and the whole thing went to court.

Just to clarify:

Billy's first wife asked about legal rights to "Just the Way You Are,"
which is the song that Billy has stated was written for her.
