circa 1974 Billy Joel:
(spoken) "This is my interpretation of a country music song."
(Billy makes hee haw horse noises)
"Well, I went into town the other night
To see if I could start a fight
I felt so mean that I was goin' nuts
Well, I felt so downright mean, you see,
That when some dude bumped into me
I went and stuck a pitchfork in his guts.
(chorus)
Well, I ain't no hippie commie fag
I pledge allegiance to the flag
I don't believe that college kids should vote,
Yes, I'm a peaceful man, you see,
But if you don't agree with me
I'll have to kick your teeth right down your throat.
Billy: "Pick a little!" (instrumental pickin')
Well, after that, I felt just fine,
So I got my woman on the line
I told her I was comin' to her place
Well, I didn't love her anymore
So when she opened up the door
I emptied my revolver in her face.
(chorus)
Well, I ain't no hippie commie fag,
I pledge allegiance to the flag
I don't believe that college kids should vote
Yes, I'm a peaceful man, you see
But if you don't agree with me
I'll have to kick your teeth right down your throat.

Heya :) No, I didn't send you that one. Maybe you got it from Joy?
And I double-checked my copy, and it is definitely from a concert at
the Bottom Line. There must be several versions of this one floating
around out there. I believe my Bottom Line copy is from around '74,
though.

Jason, there must be cuz my Live At The Bottom Line doesn't have it on there
... about everything else from that era, but not The Cowboy Song. BTW, ever
heard of "Money Or Love?" It was a "SF Outtake" (I take it Storm Front) added
to this tape I have ... but I never heard that either!

I have this song several times. I have it from the Bottom Line (yes, it's a
hidden track), on my Rare Recordings Tape, on the 1974 Memphis one, on a 1974
Denver one, and on a couple more. It's one he liked to do when he was
starting out. After he did the song, people would clap and he'd say "Oh, you
like that? Write that down, people like cowboy song." I believe that was the
quote. I'm away from all my music at the moment, so I can't check. Hope that
clears that up!

My "Bottom Line" recording is on cassette so, yeah maybe that explains it.
Maybe it is on there and whoever wrote the listing of songs didn't include it
... I don't know until I listen again. (smile)

I heard these lyrics on "An evening of questions and answers", Billy
gave in N=FCrnberg, Germany in 1996 !
It was very funny, he explains why he first didn=B4t like country music.

I am... an innocent woman.... oh yes I am.... <laugh>
Didn't do it. Have it on CD, but didn't do it.

Bottomline was 1976..... Played it for my fiancee the other night for the
"first time" only to have him singing along! He said they used to play it on
the radio at a station in Montgomery, AL a few years ago and that the DJ still
works there and still plays it.....
The scary part was when he started naming Billy songs that I still
DON'T have! <pout>
Joy

Fiancee? Whoa! When did this happen? My heart is broken, Joy! ;)
Congrats to you and your fella. If he can name Billy songs that *you*
don't have, he must be quite a catch.
