Dear All,
This probably was discussed ages ago, but here goes anyway. In
the Counting Crows album "Recovering the Satellites", the song 'Monkey'
contains the line "...Got Ben Folds on my radio right now..."
Now, I have a friend (currently in New York so I can't ask him
exactly where he heard it...) who is sure that Adam Duritz (Counting Crows
guy) is mentioned in one of the songs on Fear of Pop. I don't know where/if
his name is sung/spoken on FOP (I don't have it), but the "Ben Folds on my
radio" lyric *does* exist on the Counting Crows album.
Do Adam Duritz and Ben Folds know each other? can anyone
explain the reference to Ben Folds or Adam Duritz in the respective songs?
And if you can't find an Adam Duritz reference in FOP, don't
blame me, blame the mad ginger English guy rapidly running out of money in
New York.

Thanks in advance,

Richard

hmmm, wow. I've been meaning to get a CC CD...

As for Adam being mentioned in Fear of Pop, I"m not aware of that. Maybe he
is in the liner notes (which I don't have with me right now), but I haven't
heard the name in any of the songs.

Though today I noticed that searching for "Ben Folds Five" in Dejanews came
up with the Counting Crows newsgroup...

okay, here's my non-information...

adam is in fact mentioned in the first song on fear of pop... which, as luck
would have it, is entitled 'fear of pop'. something in the first verse, i
don't remember word for word, though. it's something like, "i can see me three
stories tall, floating high off the wall, like adam duritz, my bedroom wall,
taking pictures, and lifting off..."
um. or...something. i dunno what that's about.

and yep, in 'monkey', the ben folds line is there. (i love that line. it
combines two very favorites, ben and the crows.) bf5 did open for counting
crows at some point, i know.

maybe ben put adam in his lyrics BECAUSE adam put ben in his. eh, i have no
idea. excuse me, i'm delirious right now. *sniffle*

hope i helped (in some really really vague way.)

anyways.

love,

BFF are one of Adam Duritz's favorite bands.. He actually put him in the lyrics
to "Monkey" before they toured together.

I had the priviledge of seeing that tour and after singing Monkey (invoking a
huge cheer from the crowd when Ben's name was sung) Adam told the audience how
cool it was to have one of his favorite groups opening for them.. he said it
was like having his own personal concert each night..

OOOOOH... too bad when I saw Counting Crows, Fiona "pity me, I embody feminism
AND sluttiness!" Apple opened for them... <sigh> CC and BF5 would have rocked
my world all over the room.

Monkey is kind of a sucky song, IMHO, but the Ben Folds mention does give it a
boost.. I'd forgotten about that! I've been into Counting Crows since the get
go, and would occasionally wonder, "Who's Ben Folds?"

Adam Duritz also helped Dog's Eye View get their start... he wore their
t-shirt in a music video, I think.

Oh my god! That song is the whole reason I picked up on Ben Folds Five in the
first place... Forever and ever, I always wondered what a "ben folds" was and
why it was on his radio.. (I honestly never thought it might be a band PLAYING
on the radio)... Then I saw Whatever and Ever Amen in a record store and
bought simply because I was overly excited that I knew what that line meant...
I ended up loving the CD... this was all a couple of weeks before Brick came
out mind you...

As far as the song Monkey, it would be my favorite CC song if it had a
different title! Couldn't he have called the song after some girls name or
something? I just hate the word monkey.

Oh well.. That's my story..

Kinda like how "Proudest Monkey" ruins Crash for Dave Matthews Band, right?
Well...actually...it's the worst song on the album anyway.

Sorry.

"Monkey see, monkey do."

Argh. :-)

I always tended to think that the presence of Dave Matthews and his band ruins
"Crash".
