I'm a graduate student at Southern Methodist University doing research on what
people think is cool. Both what cool is, and what things (colors, cars, people,
places, activities, etc.) are cool.
The premise of my research is, "An advertisers definition of cool is vastly
different from the definition of cool given by people ages 15-35 (+ -)."
The questionnaire below may be filled out and forwarded to me, or visit my website:

Age: Gender: Male Female

City: State:
Tell us what cool is ...
Tell us what types of things are cool. (i.e. music, food, cars, colors, people,
trends, activities, TV shows, movies etc. ...) WHY ARE THEY COOL?
We look forward to hearing from you ASAP. Thanks for your help!
what is the recent trend involving research studies done by voluntary
reply on usenet? that's a pretty damn specific subject pool, and i'm sure
will give accurate predictions for the entire demographic range. this is
extremely unprofessional, unscientific, and i find it very hard to believe
that any grad student who would conduct a study in this manner would be
taken seriously at all.
learn how to do research, and then we might listen to you. otherwise,
go away, stop using poor netiquette (crossposting irrelevant information
to several newsgroups at once is called spamming. i could contact your
postmaster for this, as it is technically a violation of net rules and
could be classified as abuse of your account, sometimes punishable by
revoking your net access), and learn how to collect representative sample
information.

With a carefully designed and controlled study such as this you will get
very reliable and scientifically valid results!

I agree that the posting did reflect some unprofessional and unscientific
approach, but to react so harshly is somewhat overdone. I could also have
complained but as this newsgroup gets over 400 new messages per day, I'm not
bothering as it takes too musch time to scan this newsgroup anyway. However I am
responding to your posting as this one really irritates me.

Acording to netiquette, spamming is posting irrelevant, inappropriate or
offending messages to one or more newsgroups. Ok, multiple newsgroups were target
of the original message, but I don't think it was irrelevant although the
contents was poor. Also according to netiquette, if you are annoyed because of
spamming, replies must be sent by e-mail and not by posting into the newsgroup
(to avoid cascading). I've quickly scanned the newsgroup and (excluding 'X
sucks') found at least 4 threads that can be marked as spamming and of which one
that was really offending.
Thus, you flame the guy because you think he was violating netiquette, but you
yourself are violating it also by not responding accordingly. Also to start
threatening by reporting him hopefully resulting in the closing of his account is
also way off. I really wonder what you do with postings like 'Read this and earn
one million dollars' (and other junk crossposted over all usenet) as you say
nothing about other spamming activities
It seems to me that you are either a teacher you enjoys harassing and
intimidating students, or you are playing a practical joke on a college student.
Either way, the guy doesn't deserve this kind of response!
This posting is already off limits so flames to fkor...@bazis.nl

You'd be surprised how bad research is in the social sciences sometimes.
Sociologists and psychologists want to see themselves as scientists, yet
the nature of the subject matter is not conducive to good scientific
study. Rather than admit this, though, they simply conduct bad scientific
studies. If you doubt this, check the final chapter of Richard Feynman's
autobiography _Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman_ (the chapter is called
"Cargo Cult Science").
BTW Abbs- I'll probably be back on the JH list within a couple of weeks;
say hi to all the folks there. :)

Two things are immediately apparent. Firstly, you do not know how to
select a valid sample. Secondly, you do not seem to know how
advertising works.
Advertisers use focus groups, scientifically selected samples, test
markets, polls, and a variety of other means to determine how to target
their intended audience. The advertisers own opinion of "cool", or any
other characteristic is totally irrelevant. Actually, in the age group
you are interested in, the current definition of "cool" is more than
likely the RESULT of advertising.
For the record, I have been dealing with advertisers and ad agencies
for 30+ years, doing high-end TV post-production for commercial
accounts.
Just in defense of the much-maligned psychologists (sorry, sociologists, but
you're on your own!!!), I would like to say that while there are obviously
very poorly researched studies, I can tell you that there are plenty of
genuine attempts at psychological research using the scientific method, with
properly done statistical information, level of potential standard deviation,
and continuous studies done with numerous heterogeneous population pools,
properly done control groups, and the whole bit.
There are two such problems with psychology in regard to scientific studies
that I can think of off the top of my head: 1) it is a very, very new
science, still very much in its infancy. 2) psychology is doing something
that is extremely difficult -- trying to quantify something that is often
difficult to quantify.
But please trust me when I say that the majority of psychological research
being conducted makes a genuine attempt to be scientific, and gains are being
made constantly in better research. Yes, there are still very poor studies
being made, but I guarantee that the person "conducting" this "research" is
not doing in in any sort of method that she learned in psychology. I mean,
first of all, what sort of psychological study would simply state the premise
as, "What is cool?" They would be the laughing stock of the campus.

yo, step off. it already came and went. sorry guys, you missed the
boat. skaters were sporting that style back in '93 with the whole "ben
davis work shirt/old school pumas/baggy jeans" motif.
not to brag, but after i saw ziggy marley sporting a jamaican adidas soccer
jersey in a '92 concert i ordered a regular old green jersey thru a soccer
company. they were pretty dope,
and that was before the whole "off-color-ribbed-neck-old-school" shirts were
in. those are pretty used up as well. case in point, the knicks t-shirt
ad-rock was wearing in the "so whatcha want" video, when "check your
head" came out in '92. That was hella long ago! thats all played out.
The British Invasion came once, let's keep it that way. I'm not baggin'
the music, but we need something new original style or trend. is it
possible? i dunno.has everything been played out?. let's stop bringing back
the past, retro-70's and all that shit. it's fly clothing, i'll be the first
one to admit. but we need something other to call our own besides grunge.

What are you talking about? We have wonderfully intelligent words like
"dope," "fly," and "yo, step off." Try not to use those in email/usenet. It
makes you look really low class. And why would we want to call grunge our
own? It's a quite embarassing genre with very little talent at large. But
hey, why do we need anything else to call our own?!? We've got "fly!"

Here's your response Dewey. Apparently you didn't read the message. Did I
say that the PERSON was low class? No. I said his actions made him look low
class. There's a difference in criticizing one's actions as opposed to his
person. Or didn't you know that?
And this thread has been going for several weeks with the crossposting. Do
you expect me to single handedly stop it? I certainly hope not. Calm down,

this is most probably the weakest flame i've ever read in my entire
life. not only did you misunderstand the point of the post you were
attempting to flame, but you acted condescending while spewing drivel. 10
point deduction, dearie[1]. plus, the thread has actually died down for a
couple of weeks, and all of us over on newgroups where people actually
discuss things intelligently were hoping it had just gone away.
unfortunately, your ego reared its ugly (and rather tiny, one would
imagine) head and tried to show the world your intelligence...
try again with flaming a "make money fast" spam, and then you can work
your way up to flaming posts that have actual content. try reading
alt.flame for a while, and pick up a few tips. next time, i expect better
of you. don't waste bandwidth.

[1] i can be condescending because i'm Not spewing drivel. if you're going
to patronize, you better at least have something to say. otherwise you
just sound absurd.
