Some quick thoughts on the Letterman performance (like 5 seconds after it
was performed):

1. Brian Wilson 2000 was basically performed. That makes, what, four late
night performances between 1992 and 1998, with three of those performances
being Brian Wilson? I know, I know, it's the new single...
2. Steve lost a bit of weight.
3. Ed gained a bit of weight.
4. Dave called it "Rock SpectaCLE," proving that nobody in late night
actually has heard of the band.
5. They weren't given an interview. Damn!
6. An addition to point #1- I really hope that they don't start playing
the single version in concert...

That's all I could figure out from the performance...still nice that they
finally made it to Letterman.

Proud and naked,

Jay

HI everyone,
Well they've finally made it to late night main stream. Did anyone
else think Steve had a case of the giggles? Was a very different
performance. I had to watch it twice to really appreciate it. I just
think I was a bit taken back by them playing the single version.
My first impression was that the sound was bad. You couldn't hear Jim
until the bridge, and Ed was just drowned out. I don' t know much
about sound boards and such but it sure sounded like they didn't have
the levels adjusted properly.
It was definitely worth the wait to see them come this far!
but what's up with Dave saying "Despite their name" I kinda took that
as an insult... What's wrong with the name Dave? More prejudice in
the world? Oh well, the show was Great... Well done boys!

>2. Steve lost a bit of weight.

I think he's just kept it off from the tour
but no TV clothes?

>3. Ed gained a bit of weight.

he looks great! that home cooking must be doing him well.

>5. They weren't given an interview. Damn!

most music guests on his show aren't :(

I'll agree with you there Jay
hope you all caught it also!

Bear in mind that Letterman only lets musical performers on for a certain
amount of time. They might've been asked to trim the song, as Ben Folds Five
had to for "Brick", among others...

I was kinda expecting Dave to make some lame April Fool's jokes about having
bare naked ladies on the show as a treat--playing off the name. But I noticed
the show was REAL careful to refer to them as "musical group" or "we have a
great band, Barenaked Ladies, here tonight."

wonder why!

I did notice that with steve, especially at the very beginning, he was about to
crack up when he was saying "lying in bed..." and that whole part. the single
version was probably because letterman gave them a certain amount of time and
th efull version wouldn't fit.

He followed that comment with something along the lines of they're actually
five men with all their clothes on. He said they were there to perform a great
song that he thought everyone would really like. I don't think he meant any
disrespeK

>>2. Steve lost a bit of weight.
>I think he's just kept it off from the tour

I saw the New Years show and Steve was NOT that skinny. He looks great!!!

>Did anyone
>else think Steve had a case of the giggles?

I was thinking he was laughing because of the way Dave pronounced the name of
the album.

I also loved the little Saturday Night Live thing they did with Alec and that
Heather girl. Kevin givin' Alec high fives and everyone waving to the crowd.
Maybe Lorne Michaels was watching and sees how comfortable they were saying
goodnight to the crowd in that cheezy way and they're halfway there!!

>>5. They weren't given an interview. Damn!
>most music guests on his show aren't :(

But if Dave really loves you, he'll have you on two nights in a row, like
Counting Crows!! Wouldn't that be great?

It was a great show and they all looked great. I love Kevin's new hairdo. I
was just a little disappointed that they didn't show much of Tyler. Oh well,
soon enough we will be seeing all of them, everywhere!!!

Agreed. He didn't mean any insult. It means, "despite being CALLED
Barenaked Ladies, they're NOT....'

The other thing that I didn't like is that they just looked a bit tense.
Compare THIS performance to their first Conan O'Brien performance (where
they also played Brian Wilson), and you'll see that the BNL have gotten a
bit more "serious" recently...

Yeah. I think though that Dave has just gotten so damn CHATTY recently <g>..
like during "Know Your Curent Events" and such.. I'll just sit there saying
"SHUT UP!" <g> He just wastes a huge amount of time. I think if he didn't,
music guests in general would have more time.
And that man running across the stage on fire is _so_ old and such a time
waste.... but the show is still better than Leno. :)

I couldnt disagree more. Dave sucks the big one. It was painful to sit
through his crap waiting for the ladies to come on. Leno is not much better -
but anything would be better than that snob Dave. He is a prick to his guests
and is just an all around jerk.

I think Steve was great. They all seemed psyched by being able to
perform on Letterman, and aside from the flighty sound of Steve at
the very beginning (which wasn't as bad as some people think--I
should like to see YOU perform on Letterman live in front of a few
hundred people, not to mention the people who watch it later on TV)
it was a great performance.

I truly enjoyed it. As a matter of fact, I was so excited I nearly passed
out, among other things. (screaming, hyperventilating, going insane).
Tyler and Jim got a couple of good shots, but they kind of got stiffed
because they were blocked on the inner portion of the stage. Of
course Steve and Ed got a lot of good shots, since they were in front,
and Kevin got quite a few because he was on the side. The Late
Show is responsible . . . shoulda let them use a bit more of the stage.

It would sound like an insult if you put it on the phrase before: "you'll
enjoy despite their name". On the closed captioning, though, it has a
period between "you'll enjoy" and "despite their name", so Mr. Letterman
must have said "Despite their name, our next guests are in fact five
fully-clothed GUYS . . . " I also noticed that Mr. Letterman, letting them
have the stage, said "Barenaked Ladies . . . boys!" Silly uptight CBS
execs. Oh well.

> >2. Steve lost a bit of weight.

Having never seen him on TV before, or moving at all (except thanks to
BNL TV), I wouldn't know very much of a difference just looking
at him. I'll take your word for it. He really looks fantastic, as
well as the other Ladies.

The hair kind of shocked me at first, but I've grown to love it in the 15
hours
since I first saw it.

Maybe the Late Show will invite them back and interview them. *hope*

Steve looked absolutely wonderful <swoon>. Kevin's hair was ... interesting.
You couldn't hear Jim or Ed. Yes, they looked nervous at the beginning and
*serious.* But Steve pulled it together with a modifed patented
Steve's-mucked-up-dance (TM) at the very end of the song.

I don't think Steve's weight was lost, though ... looks like it *found* Ed and
Alec Baldwin. ;-)

Ohhh....I almost went nuts when they did that - because Letterman WAS
running out time, that the ending was actually ending, and having BNL was a
joke after all. But then I saw Tyler waving, and knew they were coming on.
I knew I was a retard :) but I was just looking so forward to seeing them
that I was going nuts!

I was nearly hyperventilating, I was so sure that Dave was gonna go over, and
would have to say that BNL couldn't be on because they'd run out of time! I
was crazed, but calmed down as soon as I saw them, but was hyped up again at
seeing them play!

I was flipping out when they were all waving goodbye even tho i saw the
ladies in the background. i thought they had just cut out the BNL
segment entirely and were just going to end the show right there.
Letterman would have gotten hate mail from me had that happened! But
there was relief and peace when i finally saw them on stage ready to
sing. <phew!>

I HATED HOW THEY SHORTENED BRIAN WILSON! Geez.... I mean, the beginning
of that song is sooooo cool. The rest of the song flows out of it. I
understand that they had to trim the song down for Letterman, but, my God,
it is only like 30 extra seconds! That bites. Oh well.

As for overall performance - saddening. Not the Ladies. The CBS slot guys. But the
overall effect was a bright hope for the tour this summer and another stop in Salt
Lake. Eric

has anyone else noticed that of the 6 late-nite appearances BNL has made (5
conan, 1 letterman), they have played brian wilson THREE times? years apart,
too.. it's like, they keep thinking it's their current hit (i think this is the
first time it really is - in the states. it probably has been twice in canada
now - in 93 when they were all over the place, and now, if any canadians still
listen to them).. but what about that appearance on new years last year - that
was just sort of a random choice, i think...

i can't wait for the new album - "never is enough" is one of my favorite songs by
them now, and i think the new album is going to be excellent :)
