I don't really know much about Bif Naked, except that one of my friends
likes her a lot, and that Bif is from Canada.

As are the Barenaked Ladies...(I know you already know, its for dramatic
effect)

So, is this pure coincidence, a Canadian World Supremecy Plot, or lack
of originality by Bif?? Who knows?

(This is what happens when AP Euro homework gets boring)

I saw her in concert, unfortunately. I won tix to a BIf Naked and Fuel show
in Boston but I was sick and only stayed for Bif Naked. She *sucked*! It's
really fast punkyrockcrap. She has a song called "I died eating French
fries." No joke. It's about getting dumped at a restaurant.
There was this spastic girl next to me flailing around to every song and
procaliming her love for Bif Naked and offering her body. It was odd.
And her album is called "I Bificus". Enough said.

Oh, sidenote: I got vertical horizon's Everything You Want - oh my God! What
a great album. Are their others just as good?

Y'all should check out Stroke 9. They're pretty good too! ROckin' my world
right now. They do that Little Black Backpack song if you've heard it.

Looking forward to next weekend with BNL and Guster!... rock!

I reviewed her CD, "I Bificus", for the radio station where I DJ, and
it was...yeah, very creatively lacking, though not necessarily bad.
Just...not that good. :-) There's nothing particularly original on
it, and the lead single was a complete No Doubt rip-off. If it was
all energetic power-pop, that'd be one thing, but there are a few
slow, boring songs on there, so...uh...can't recommend it. :-) The
liner notes are pretty funny...she talks about her childhood and how
she's "straight edge".

So i've only heard "Moment of Weakness" and "Lucky". I thought "MOW" was pretty

You can say that but when you look at 99% of music none if it is that
original, it's basically the whole guitar, bass and drum thing, even BNL.
Without their quick wit and comedy approach to music they would basically be
any other band (albeit a very talented one) writing good songs. You can
count on one hand the number of artists who genuinely break from the usual
format. I can only think of maybe Built to Spill and Morphine, who are sadly
no more. If I had to remove from my CD rack all the music that wasn't
original they would be the only thing I would have left. Bye bye Toad,
Vertical Horizon and Hootie that some of us like.

> half a point for nonconformity in appearance, but she's really close to

Can you rack up another half point for having a track on her debut album
that is just spoken word? That's the only one I have (true I wasn't overly
impressed and will not be buying "I Bificus") but it does contain a few good
songs, notably "Tell On You (aka Letter to my Rapist)" which may explain why
she sounds a bit annoyed some of the time. Add another point for having
liner notes which actually deviate from the normal 'thank you' lists too.
Why don't BNL write amusing liner notes anymore?

As for "selling out" ... what would you call releasing a song called "Brian
Wilson 2000"? Eh?

Ooh, controversial. ;-)

that is partially true. i study music, it is my life. there is a difference
between ripping off someone and sounding similar, its a thin line that is
crossed way too often if you ask me. as for the guitar drum and bass bit-
that's an accepted thing, there aren't that many ways of making music when you
get down to it, and you have to do what you feel is right (this is probably the
only time i will defend Bif.) but there are enough ways of being original.

BNL are five minutes away from officially selling out, which is a shame. i

The irony of the words from the first album inlay "In 1992 BNL pose amongst
a pile of directors chairs to show their relaxed, serious side. Coincidence?
No, calculated image construction." seem more relevant than ever now.
We'll just have to hope that the next time they play NKOTB they will scrap
plans for a BNL lunchbox, which all things considered is becoming more
likely.

I really don't think we should (or have the right to) place any of the
blame on the band here; they're a mainstream act now, and these things
happen when you're that popular. Media appearances are part of the
package. Let's move on with our lives. They don't ACT like stuck-up
and pompous rock stars. If you had lived in a cave for 10 years and met
them on the street, you would have no clue that they were famous.

I agree they are quite amiable and unassuming despite their recent success
yet I think they were quite capable of saying no to the idea of re-recording
Brian Wilson. Especially when it is just to cash in on their recent success
and dress it up as something new by adding 2000 to the title when the song
is actually less than what it was. They do have some control as to what they
record and what events they use to promote it. Out of all the artists
currently being played BNL are one of the few that I would have thought
would value the music more than making their record company bosses happy.

Stunt has been out for over a year and if they really wanted to do something
for the year 2000 they could have released some new material or packaged the
single with something extra. If anything they could have made the excellent
"Long Way Home" an extra track on the single, at least that way people who
missed the LE Stunt would have a chance of hearing it. This recent explosion
of worldwide appreciation is obviously something they want to capitalise on
while they can and without much thought.

<< selling out time: five minutes and counting >>

It seems like no band in the world can enjoy the slightest modicum of success
w/out being accused of selling out.

1. 'Selling out' implies that a group chooses profits over their personal
beliefs. People were angry when the Beatles song "Revolution" was used in the
Nike ad, b/c it went against what the song and the band stood for. (Although
that was a case of someone else selling the song out) Just because a band is
successful does *not* mean they have 'sold out'. As for BNL, I have never
seen/heard/read anything that would make me feel they have compromised their
ideals. Note: THEIR ideals--not mine, not yours, not anyone else other than
the band.

2. Merchandising does not equal 'Selling Out'. While merchandise is a form of
advertising for a band, it is generally only bought by existing fans of the
band. These are people who already like the music, and want a physical token
of this love. Whether it is a t-shirt that commemorates a concert the fan went
to, a video collection on DVD to watch over and over again, or a calendar that
lets you think about the band every day, the merchandise is a means to continue
experiencing a connection with the music that you love. If no interest exists,
then no products exist.

3. Just because *you* do not choose to watch a particular show is no reason
for the band not to go on and perform. Perhaps someone who would never turn on
the radio or go to a concert will be watching, and perhaps *they* will find
themselves blown away by the music, as all of us here have had happen at one
time or another. It won't make them any less of a fan if their first
experience *was* Regis & Kathie Lee, or if it was GMA, or if it was whatever!

Every time I hear the phrase "selling out" I bristle. It's a mighty big
accomplishment to even get to a point where people *want* to buy you! In
addition, the more success a band enjoys, the more leverage they have in doing
the projects *they* want to do, and the more impetus they have for continuing
to make music. Sure, I'd love to have BNL as my own private club band,
churning out music just for me, and my friends. But, ya know what? They make
darn good music, and I can't begrudge anyone else the opportunity for finding
that out for themselves.

I'm just going to repost Elizabeth's repost of Steve's NG post shortly after
BW2000 was released in the States.

>In light of the recent release of this single to the UK, and for a
>rather in-depth (and from the horse's mouth) explanation of the song, I
>figure I'll repost what Steven posted to the newsgroup in 1997 (in
>response to questioning fans and some BW2K criticism).

"I just figured that I should write an explanation:
Our record company, Reprise, has been really supportive of the band on
this last album, and after their success with Old Apartment, they
decided
to go with a new single. Brian Wilson was their choice, and was cool
with us, as we figured that song was a favourite of our fans, but had
never
really got a fair chance at radio in the past ( I know that there are
those of
you who wish that we'd never get played on the radio so we can stay your
own private band, and I understand, but that's a whole other issue; for
now, let's just say that we've got families to support, and we have
never
romanticized playing in crappy little clubs, but if you have to see us
in
some enormodome somewhere, we know you're out there and promise to
give you the best show we can, regardless of where your seats are).

Anyway, after BW was decided as the single, a lot of radio stations
refused to play it because it was live and "we don't play live
records". So,
after countless failed remixes and edits of the Rock Spectacle version
(we
hated all of them except the album version), we said - yes, it was our
idea
- let's go re-record it. So, we got together with Gavin MacKillop (Toad
the
Wet Sprocket, the Church, Hunters and Collectors), and did it on a day
off in Seattle this summer. We had a blast doing it, and are really
happy
with the end result. We think it sounds great, but I understand a lot
of
you hate it. That's fine - I just wanted you to know that we are to
blame,
nobody else.
More than anything, re-recording Brian Wilson made us even more
excited about doing a new cd, which we are writing right now.

As for the other tracks, the edit of Break Your Heart is there as some
stations expressed interest in playing it as a follow up to Brian, but,
again, it's too long for radio. Most stations won't play songs longer
than
four minutes.

Back, on the other hand is a track that was recorded for Pirate Ship,
and
it's one I always really liked, so I'm glad it's out there now. So, if
you're a
long-time fan, and feel slighted by Brian Wilson 2000 ( called that
because Don't Stand So Close To Me '86 was already taken), consider
Back to be for you."

Hopefully some of you found that interesting. I did when I found it.

True; but Brian Wilson 2000 didn't come out this year; it came out in
1997 (Stateside).

Check out Nancy's post referencing my post of Steve's old post (yikes)
