Sorry, mine have little to do with punk/underground, but here goes:

1. Rush - Oakland, CA 1986
2. Jane's Addiction - Sacramento, CA 1991
3. King Crimson - Berkeley, CA 1995

Eric, I gotta agree that after seeing The Neckbreakers countless times,
they were never any better than just prior and just after their first
European tour. Every band has a peak period which they sometimes never
again match...let's hope that they can reach those heights again. It could
be a new band next time out........

Okay:

1) Teengenerate/New Bomb Turks at Emo's, Austin TX 11/95. I doubt the
feeling of seeing my favorite band on their last tour will ever be topped.
2) 7 Seconds, CBGB's 2/89. My first true punk show. They played a lot of
their best old songs. The memory of it all is so sharp that it feels like
I had an out-of-body experience.
3) hmmm, there's lots that come close, including every Lord High Fixers
show I've seen, every Rev. Horton Heat show, Supersnazz at Emo's in 10/95,
Afghan Whigs in '94. I won't choose, because it really depends on what
mood I'm in.

1968?
Jethro Tull opens for Jeff Beck's band whose lead singer is Rod the Mod.
This was a winter night in January in the DC suburbs of Virginie. We
dosed up on window pane and drove through the snow primarily to see Tull
whose "That Was" lp was in heavy rotation at the opium den we frequented.

1969
Kinks headline at the U of Maryland sports area, The Youngbloods open.
Sat in bleechers on one side out in left field. A contingent of the
Pagans motorcycle club was just below our little hash ladden trio and
placed an evil halo on the proceedings every time i "loosened up". One
bro had "fuck" tattooed on his chin which added some odd spice to his
rotten tooth grin.

1969
The Band playing at some Opera house in DC or it could have been some
fraternal mosque near the Smithsonian. After nearly memorizing the
lyrics of "The Big Pink" into absurdity all I can "clearly" recall is the
odd stage movements the guys made, bowing and circling in some cryptic
dance movements and that huge rolling organ sound..all very circuslike.

Ever?!?! Ya gotta be kidding? Who can limit it to only 3? In the last year
I will have to say that my top 3 shows are:
1) Untamed Youth/Swingin' Neckbreakers at Brownies. Even though the
Neckbreakers were a little out of form that night, out of form for them
means better than ever for anyone else. And who can beat the one-two punch
of this truly amazing lineup?
2) Jackie & The Cedrics at Continental. With only a few singles released
on various labels and not getting to tour over here much (They live in
Japan) these guys don't get the credit that they deserve. They are, hands
down, the best surf band I've ever seen (not that they limit themselves to
playing just surf) and they just have so much fun going absolutely nuts on
stage that the feeling is totally contagious..
3) The Lyres at Brownies last Feb. Jeff C never ever sounded better and
the band was as tight as I'd ever seen them. This show really made me
start to appreciate them again after kinda taking them for granted for the
last few years. By the way, their latest CD on Norton is a must have.
4) (Oops, did I say 3? Oh well, I lied) The Swingin' Neckbreakers and The
Insomniacs at some club in Asbury Park. Both bands were in top form so
what more could anyone want. I was especially 'on' that night from having
done Blair's radio show with him earlier that afternoon when he let me
program the whole show.

I've been thinking about this one...can I add three more?

1) Untamed Youth @ The Loop Lounge - I'd never seen anything like them
before (Or since) I bought everything they had from Deke and tried to pay
extra..

2) The Cramps/Raunch Hands @ The Ritz - I had no idea who the Raunch Hands
were before the show. They fucking blew the roof off the place. I went
out and bought Whap-A-Dang the next day. And the Cramps were the best
they'd ever been

3) Man or Astro-man? @ Maxwells - If I tried real hard I could probobly
name all twenty people who were there. The Woggles were the headliners,
but I will only remember MOAM? "Put the TV Head back on or I'll stab
you...!"

Seeing "Kevman"'s mention of Rush marks the first time I've ever puked on
my computer. And Rush are from my country! Kevman, don't EVER mention Rush
around here AGAIN you cruel fucker!
About the three best shows thing, it reminded me of an interesting
conversation I had with a fascinating dude I met in St. Louis a couple of
weeks ago. That's right, it was none other than the fabulous "Beatle Bob",
who has seemingly seen and done it all when it come to rock'n'roll, past
and present. The guy is pretty old, yet still dresses like Paul Revere
(both), still has a Beatle hair cut and still "wigs out" at r'n'r shows.
The guy is full of crazed enthusiasm. Anyhow, I asked him what his top
shows of all time were and his memories blew me away.
Get this... the best show he's ever seen was JAMES BROWN AND HIS FAMOUS
FLAMES at some ballroom in Chicago in '68!!! He said he's seen 'em all
(from the Coasters to Rancid) and NOBODY topped the Godfather's raw, wild,
yet tightly choreographed moves. His runner up was equally impressive: THE
IKE AND TINA TURNER REVIEW in St. Louis in '65!!! Anyone who's seen old
tapes of this amazing live band should be in awe that ol' Bob was actually
able to shake his tailfeather to the real thing!
What amazed me most was this was a guy who just spend all night
out-dancing everyone punk kid in St. Louis to the Smugglers and the Mr. T
Experience!!! He was right at the front the whole time!

My three shows -ahem- would be 1) the Gruesomes at Club Soda, Vancouver BC
1987. 2) Untamed Youth, Railway Club, Vancouver, 1989. 3) every other
rock'n'roll show I've seen, just about (unless me or someone else got
punched in the face... those are down around the #4 spot).

Wow, two Iggy Pop mentions in a row! Maybe I shoulda gone to that free
outdoor SXSW thing last night.
I heard there were people (gasp) stagediving and that he even (yikes) spat

btw, this is not a rip on Iggy, but the people who were there.
on a related note, I saw James Brown last year and he was still as tight
as any tv show I'd seen of him, but his band sucked ass. But he still had
the moves down even though he's 60-something and heavier than his prime.
Totally predictable, totally fun.

Easy, Alf...one can like what you call alternative/retro/whatever and
still dig the above. I like DIY music fine - I'm in The Decibels and was
in The E-Types, both power pop/punk bands - but happen to like bands
who actually spend time learning how to play more than three chords and
one time signature...and can write songs over three minutes long.

I've had to bear the pain of hearing too many garage bands in clubs who
are on the verge of a train wreck, both muscially and rhythmically; those
bands have no place playing in front of a paying audience.

And given the opportunity to stay underground and wallow in obscurity
while playing in sweaty, smoky bars, or to sell 12 million-plus copies
of an album, play large venues with better P.A. systems and better
acoustics, AND make enough money off of one record and tour to be set
for life...please. I'll be happy to take the latter.

Here's my two cents (or three shows...)
1.Lyres at Maxwells, Hoboken 86 or 87
The best Lyres gig I ever saw and by far one of the sweatiest good times
I've ever had in a rock club. They ran out of songs and started to repeat
the set list.
2. Doug Sahm & The Last Real Texas Blues Band, Maxwells 95
Sir Doug is the king and this marathon show (featuring a full horn section
and selections from the earliest SDQ to the new album) was the best I've
ever seen by him
3. Dickies, Green Parrot, Neptune, NJ 1988
Dickies at the top of their form, still promising the new LP that took
about six years to materialize, in a small club with a smaller stage.
INTENSE!
HONORABLE MENTION
Stevie Ray Vaughan, 1981, Royal Manor North, North Brunswick, NJ
very early SRV, saw him from about 10 feet away.
Who, Shea Stadium, 1982, Suffering through their modern crap was worth
hearing Young Man Blues (and I got to see the Clash open)
Worst show I've ever seen...
1. Rolling Stones, JFK Stadium, Philly 1981
Boring, boring, boring crap. I blew a lot of money for those tickets and
will never forgive the Stones for being a bunch of lazy, old fucks

1) New Sounds of the '60s @ Montezuma Hall, San Diego State University,
Summer, 1988. A mod, garage, and ska festival that included the
Funseekers, the Mummies, the Untamed Youth, Manual Scan, and Donkey Show.

2) Manual Scan @ Soma (last ever "New Sounds"), San Diego, 1991(?). Manual
Scan's gutsiest, crunchiest show that I've ever seen. This show was one of my
favorite ever single band performances, and these mod poppers rocked harder
than any garage outfit that I've seen.

3) Tie between Jigsaw Seen @ Megalopolis (San Diego, 1994) and the
Tell-Tale Heart's reunion at the Casbah (San Diego, 1994). The Jigsaw
Seen jangle popped me in to a blissed out altered state. The Tell-Tale
Hearts proved that age hadn't dulled their spirits, and it helped that
Ray Brandes acknowledged me during their set.

An honorable mention should go to Wire Train and Big Country @ the Fox
Theatre, San Diego, 1983. Both bands are obviously far from Banana
Truffle material; but I was only 13, and these two new wave bands got me
started straying from the beaten path...

This is a tough one, there have been so many good ones. The ones that
stick in my head (for different reasons) are:

Replacements @ Continental Club 1983(?) Hootenany tour

Teengenerate/New Bomb Turks @ Emo's 1995

Humper's @ "The Satans' Shack" (a tiny wooden garage behind an
old woodframe house in N. Central Austin; the ceiling literally
was falling down; if you ever get a chance to talk to the
Humpers, ask them about it) (1994-5?)

Since this is banana-truffle I considered only "garage/punk"
bands, though all of the bands mentioned above were fairly
proficient musically. I'll take my first Butthole Surfers show
(1983) to the appropriate newsgroup.

Earlier in the evening the Turks tried to play outdoors at the Chicken
Ranch (a small house on a large lot). The police arrived so they moved
indoors and played in an extremely small living room. They had no room to
move so Eric was on top of a table or something, (I could hardly see)
dodging or playing with the ceiling fan. Very weird. Unfortunately the
man showed up again, so the Turks headed downtown and got the gig at the
Voodoo Lounge. I also witnessed the spectacle and must say the soundman
pretty much got what he was asking for. Happily none of the Turks'
equipment was damaged in the melee. Now if that soundman would just get a
fucking haircut to go with his new nosejob.

Well, I'll probably sound like a dick but wasn't the subject top 3 live
shows "ever"? All the best shows you've EVER seen were on one nite,
just three nites ago? I'm still trying to think if I could even answer
this question with the tons of shows I've seen but I do know it would

2.Hasil Adkins---summer of 95 in cleveland at the grog shop.

but lets not forget about the great shows the Cynics always put on.

1. Elvis Costello & The Attractions
First US tour and "The Rock" put them in The Seattle Paramount on a
"Catch A Rising Star" $1.77 Thursday night. My amphetamine Annie had a
poem at the ready when the packed house brought the group back for an
encore. I was happy to see power pop punk on fire with it's "happy
organ" and those black horn rims.

2. Avengers + Dils
A couple of years before St Helens blew closing I5. Staged at a
lovely venue on 2nd ave in Seattle called The Bird, first punk club,
just the middle floor of a small warehouse. I was shitfaced stupid and
the guitar player for The Mentors told me to ask the coke dealer........
"How's your stable?", he was quick to blacken my eye. I laughed it
off and apologized but declined his offer to snort up. Beer blindness
blunted all but the sloppy fun letting loose to "198 Seconds of The
Dils " and Penelope "Car Crash" Avenger...

3. Screamers
Drama meets synth..much pouting, posing and art rock minimalism at the
Carpenders Hall in the Belltown section of Seattle. Way back before
grunge or Sub Poop so the whole scene turned out for this--Tomato,
Tommy, KK and one more whose probably dead and gone now--had a great
time taking pixs, the boys were born to strike a pose. Show was put on
by Dreamland's Danny who sat in the back with his date..away from the
"Devo meets the Sex Pistols" intensity. Hope to contribute some photos
I took that night to the article Allan is writing for his next ish of

Three shows I can think of that made me glad I like music:

1) Richard Thompson, solo, at St. Ann's Church, Brooklyn Hts, Nov 1994.
Like going to Church and having G-d show up and play guitar. Really. And
I'm a Jew, too.

2) Larry mentioned the Doug Sahm/Last Real Texas Blues Band, and he hit the
nail on the head. Why weren't YOU there, ya lazy fuck?

3) buzzcocks at Maxwell's, summertime in 1992 or 1993 or 1991? I forget.
