Hey... welcome back to the latest installment of the ever-exciting My
Life with the Thrill Kill Kult FAQ, one of the only places where one can
routinely find Ed Regis' e-mail address in the rec.music.* hierarchy.
Hopefully, this version will be a bit less error-riddled than the last
few have been...

As with any FAQ, this one has a quick legal-ish section that you have to
sit through before you get to the good stuff... I'll try to keep it as
painless as possible. Basically, this document can be downloaded and
distributed as much as you want, but it cannot be altered in any way
(unless it's being used to illustrate a point or settle a vicious
argument between in-laws, in which case you're free to cut out the
irrelevant stuff for the sake of brevity). Also, I'd like to be notified
if this FAQ is going to be cited in any sort of academic or other
published context, if only to keep track of the spread of this little
file around the planet. There isn't any particular reason that I can
think of for denying anybody the right to use this thing as they please,
but if I'm not notified, you can be sure that the Knife and Fork of
Gruesome Vengeance will come and extract your innards while you sleep.

If you have anything that you'd like to see added to the FAQ, or there's
a section that needs some updating, please let me know. I can be
contacted at tmcl...@uoguelph.ca, and I'll make sure that you get the
proper credit in the next release that makes its way out into the world.

BAND INFORMATION: Who to blame for what you've been listening to
----------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What is "My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult"?
A: There are a couple of answers to that one, actually. The most obvious
of them would be that it's a band which is/was (that bit sort of depends
on who you ask, and what day it is when you do the askign) based out of
Chicago. Then again, there's always the interpretation which involves a
bit more of their history...
Way back in 1987, Groovie and Buzz (see below) approached Dannie
Flesher and Jim Nash (the guys from Wax Trax! Records) with the concept
for a movie called... you guessed it. Apparently, Jim and Dannie were
more interested in the music than in producing the movie, and turned what
was going to be the movie's soundtrack into the band's debut album, _I See
Good Spirits and I See Bad Spirits_.
Recently, though, the band have been expressing some interest in
finally releasing the movie that they're sort of named after, though
nothing concrete has been announced by either themselves, Wax Trax! or
Interscope (their current label).

Q: Who makes up/has made up the band?
A: Like most bands, the roster of TKK has changed a fair bit over the
years. Granted, there have always been a few core members, but things
have been in flux pretty consistently since day one. The complete
listing, including members who have since departed, is below.

Groovie Mann / Frank(ie) Nardiello: Lead vocals, lyrics
Buzz McCoy / Marston Daley: Vocals, lyrics, guitar,
production
Levi Levi / Charles Levi: Bass
Buck Ryder / Thomas Thorn: Keyboards, samples (now
with EHC, see below)
Martini / Sean Jordan (?): Keyboards
Trash Kavity / ?: Guitars
Otto Mattix / ?: Drums (now with EHC, see
below), lightshow
Wolfgang / ?: World's Greatest Roadie,
horns of H&RH
Beat Mistress / Linda LeSabre: Drums
(yep... THAT Beat Mistress... see below)

Q: Who are the Bomb Gang Girlz?
A: While they aren't exactly a separate musical entity, the band seems to
make a distinction between the TKK and the Girlz, at least on the liner
notes from their various albums. They usually provide back-up work on
vocals, keyboards and the like, and are also decked out in tight leather
outfits for concerts. The Girlz are:

Jacky Blacque / Rachel Hollingsworth: Vocals
Cinderella Pussie / Marcia ?: Vocals
Kitty Killdare / Laura Gomel: Keyboards, vocals
Arena Rock / Carmen Marusich: Vocals, production on
_Hit & Run Holiday_
Sekret DeZyre / Laura ?: unknown

It would seem that, at least as of the latest tour, Kitty and Sekret
DeZyre are no longer regular members of the band. Stories also continue
to flitter about regarding Cinderella's status within the band.

Q: Is there a connection between TKK and the Electric Hellfire Club?
A: That depends on how you define the word "connection". A few years
back, a couple of the guys from TKK (specifically, Buck Ryder -- who is
now going by his proper name of Thomas Thorn -- and Otto Mattix) decided
that they weren't happy with the disco-ish direction the band was taking
and broke off to form their own band. The Electric Hellfire Club was the
result, and they're now recording for Cleopatra Records. (EHC has also
proven to be a hot topic on the TKK mailing list on and off, so it can't
hurt to know at least a little bit about them...)

Q: What is their sound/live setup like?
A: The Kult's sound is more than a little bit difficult to describe.
Initially, the material that they turned out on Wax Trax! sounded a good
deal like the rest of the Wax Trax! catalogue, if a bit more frenetic and
prone to sampling; since the release of _Sexplosion!_ and the
subsequent move to Interscope, however, their sound has been described as
being a sort of "gothic-techno-industrial-dance-disco", if that helps any.
"Psycho-babble-dingbat-funk" appears to be the band's best effort to date
at categorizing their own sound.
As for their live setup, the best descriptions that I've seen to date
came from the TKK mailing list ("Lots of tight clothes," wrote dRaven)
and a recent interview in Raygun magazine ("A soundtrack for some bikini
surf sex encounter that someone's about to have, hopefully me," from the
Nov. 95 issue). That probably doesn't help much, either...
With regards to whether or not the band is inclined to record anything
else in the older style, they're quite happy with the current "disco"
trend, and have apparently always wanted to record something in this vein.
So to those of you who aren't crazy about the new stuff -- thhhhbpthtpbt!

Q: What other musical projects have the members of TKK been involved with?
A: Once upon a time, Groovie Mann was the front-man for a Chicago-area
glam/punk band called Special Affect (required trivia: SA also featured
Ministry's Al Jourgensen on guitar, though they almost didn't hire him),
which has apparently recorded a few things that die-hard completists with
piles of money will no doubt want to track down. Information on
titles/catalogue numbers for these releases would be appreciated.
Since then, he has been credited on Ministry's "Stigmata" single (he
painted the cover art and provided vocals for the b-side, "Tonight We
Murder", which is also on the more recent _Demon Knight_ soundtrack) and
Psychic TV guitarist Fred Giannelli's solo release, _Fred_ (he sang on
the track "Mindblower").
Buzz McCoy did some collaborative work on the first Excessive Force
album, _Conquer Your World_, and the accompanying single, "Conquer Your
House", released in 1991. He was also credited with helping out on
the live Pigface album, _Welcome to Mexico... Asshole_.
Levi Levi has worked all over the place, having been a member of
Pigface on _Notes from Thee Underground_ and a couple of subsequent
tours, providing his bass-playing skills for Die Warzau (on their recent
album, _Engine_) and KMFDM (on their cover of U2's "Mysterious Ways",
which can be found on Re-Constriction Records' _Shut Up Kitty_
compilation), and even becoming a touring member of Haloblack for a
two-month period in early 1995. He also appeared as a member of yet
another incarnation of Sister Machine Gun, alongside Jim Marcus, Chris
Randall and a few others, in the video for "Wired", which can be found on
volume 2 of the Wax Trax! video sampler that was released at the same
time as the Black Box. It was also announced that he'll be doing some
guest work with Van Christie's new band (formed since the breakup of Die
Warzau; ex-NIN and Die Warzau keyboardist James Wooley and Jason McNinch
of Lick are also involved) in a couple of upcoming shows.
Jacky Blacque contributed her considerable vocal talents to the track
"Blow Down Your House" on the Excessive Force album, _Conquer Your
World_.
Also on the Pigface front, Kitty Killdare contributed her vocal
talents to the album _Notes from thee Underground_, singing with Martin
Atkins on the track "Fuck It Up". (Side note: does anybody know if she
toured with them on the Pigface Team '94 tour which supported the album?)
The guys at Wax Trax! were also responsible for putting together a
two-track mutual-remix single involving TKK and KMFDM. TKK ended up
remixing KMFDM's "Naive" (an edited version of which can be tracked down
on KMFDM's _Split/Piggybank_ single), while KMFDM remixed "The Days of
Swine and Roses".
As mentioned above, Linda LeSabre is also involved in a few other bands,
among them Death Ride '69 (whose album, _Elvis Christ_, and a few other
vinyl releases are "floating around somewhere"; they've also supposedly
assembled a new electronics-heavy demo, excerpts of which will eventually
be found at http://www.crl.com/~angelus) and BeatMistress (which is a
tribal project of hers, the results of which apparently came across pretty
strongly during the recent TKK tour). She also contributed guest vocals
to the track "Terra Amata" on the Vampire Rodents' album _Clockseed_ (out
on Re-Constriction Records).

===========================================================================
MORE ABSTRACT INFORMATION: What you'd expect to read in "Teen Beat"
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What are Pill Krazed Music and the Mindway Corporation?
A: They're the two most common "organizations" associated with the Thrill
Kill Kult. Pill Krazed Music is credited on TKK releases as owning the
copyrights to all of the lyrics, etc., while the Mindway Corporation is
responsible for TKK merchandising and the operation of their fanclub, the
Kult Connection. The latest available address for the Kult Connection is:

The Mindway Corporation
PO Box 608215
Chicago, IL 60660

At least as of a couple of years ago, semi-regular "Fun Fakts" mailings
would be sent out to everybody on the Connection's mailing list; I can't
say for sure whether or not this is still happening. Does anybody want to
fill me in on this little factoid?
One other name that is frequently mentioned in conjunction with the
band's many recordings is StarLust Studios, which is the recording studio
where their material has been recorded lately.

Q: What releases have they put out to date?
A: A complete discography (including track listings and catalogue numbers
for the various formats) is available on dRaven's TKK homepage,
Sanitarium Borderline (http://pulsar.cs.wku.edu/~draven/tkk.html), but
the list of official releases is as follows:

My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult single (1987)
I See Good Spirits And I See Bad Spirits album (1988, 1993)
Some Have To Dance, Some Have To Kill single (1989)
Kooler Than Jesus single (1989?)
Kooler Than Jesus ep (1989, 1993)
Confessions Of A Knife album (1990, 1993)
...'Cuz It's Hot single (1990, 1993)
Naive / Days Of Swine And Roses single (1990)
Sex On Wheelz promo single (1991)
Martini Built for 2 promo single (1991?)
Leathersex promo single (1991?)
International Sin Set promo single (1991?)
Sexplosion! album (1991)
Sexplosion single (1991)
Sex On Wheelz single (1992)
13 Above The Night album (1993)
Blue Buddha promo single (1993)
Final Blindness promo single (1993)
Hit & Run Holiday single (1994?)
Hit & Run Holiday album (1995)

It is worth noting that two versions of _Sexplosion!_ were released; it
was right around the time that both the album and single were put out on
Wax Trax! that the band moved over to Interscope, who also put copies of
the disc out on the market. Specific differences between the two versions
will probably be noted in the next release of the TKK discography.
It should probably be noted that, while the (promo) singles for
"Martini Built for 2", "Leathersex", "International Sin Set" and "Hit &
Run Holiday" are known to exist, the dates aren't known for sure. Any
information on any of these releases, especially release dates and
catalogue numbers, would be greatly appreciated.

Q: What videos have been released so far?
A: Sadly, the band have been pretty much absent from the video scene to
date. Allusions to the existence of bits and pieces of THE movie abound
in interviews, and a 25-minute film version of "Sexplosion" was mentioned
in one interview (it wasn't clear whether this was a reference to a film
adaptation of the album or just a really long video for the one song, as
with Michael Jackson's "Thriller"), but their videography to date is
rather small. So far, the list of videos which have been turned up by TKK
list members includes:

"...And This is What the Devil Does"
"Kooler than Jesus"
"Sex on Wheelz"
"Sex on Wheelz" (Cool World edit)
"Blue Buddha"
"Blue Buddha" (live from CBS)
"Final Blindness"

Release dates for these videos aren't known at this time, nor is anything
much about the directors or production crews responsible for them (beyond
the fact that "Kooler than Jesus" cost all of about $1000 to produce).

Q: Where else has their music appeared?
A: All over the place, especially lately. Not counting the assorted side
projects with which they've been involved, TKK tracks have been featured on:

21st Century Quakemasters, Vol. 2 compilation (date unknown)
- features "The Devil Does Drugs"
Funky Alternatives, Volume 5 compilation (date unknown)
- features "Ride The Mindway"
This is Electronic Body Music video compilation (1990)
- features the video for "...And This is What the Devil Does"
KMFDM: _Split/Piggybank_ single (1991)
- features "Naive 1991 (TKK Mix-Edit)", a 4:20 version of the 9:40
mix on the TKK/KMFDM remix single from 1990.
Volume One compilation and book (1991)
- features "Leathersex" and some nifty pictures
Songs From Cool World soundtrack album (1992)
- features "Sex on Wheelz (Glamour Dyke mix)" and "Her Sassy Kiss";
in addition, the songs "The Devil Does Drugs", "Holli's Groove"
and "Sedusa" appeared in the movie.
Wax Trax! Black Box compilation (1994)
- disc three features "Do You Fear (For your Child)" and "'Cuz It's
Hot" (12" version), while the Black Box video compilations featured
"Sex on Wheelz (Motor City remix)" on tape one and "Kooler than
Jesus (Electric Messiah mix)" on tape two.
The Crow soundtrack album (1994)
- features "After the Flesh"
The Flintstones soundtrack album (1994)
- features "Hit & Run Holiday"
Showgirls soundtrack album (1995)
- features "Wasted Time" and "Somebody New"

The song "Dimentia 66" also appeared as background music in one scene in
the movie _Sliver_ (that silly Billy Baldwin/Sharon Stone thing from
1993), though it didn't appear on the soundtrack album. "The Devil Does
Drugs" (or one of the many similar-sounding offshoots) also appeared in
the background at one point in _Showgirls_.
TKK fans can also be proud of the fact that a good-sized portion of
the video for "Blue Buddha" appeared in the Beavis & Butt-Head episode,
"Pumping Iron", which originally aired on 28 March 1994 (during the
show's fourth season).

Q: Was that really them in _The Crow_?
A: You bet! The club scene around the middle of the movie, which involved
the band playing "After the Flesh" while assorted bad guys were being
thrown out of windows and into the crowd was filmed at an unnamed bar in
North Carolina, really featured the Thrill Kill Kult in all of the glory.
And no, that wasn't Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor crowd-surfing along in
the pit while they played, so stop asking.

Q: What's the story with all of these labels and changing release dates?
A: It's actually a pretty painless story to follow along, really. When
the band was first formed, all of their material was released on Wax
Trax! Records, which was an independent record label of sorts devoted to
"strange" music. In the fall of 1992, though, Wax Trax! was forced to
file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and were promptly taken over by the folks
at TVT Records, who gradually re-released most of the Wax Trax! back
catalogue (this accounts for the 1993 release dates on a lot of the older
releases, though these don't appear on the album/single packages).
After the release of the "Sex on Wheelz" single, however, the band
decided to move over to Interscope Records (Groovie's explanation,
given in an interview with dRaven, was something along the lines of "They
offered us more money"), and have been happily recording new material
ever since.
A sort-of-rumour has also been bouncing around lately regarding the
fact that the Kult is going to be dropped by Interscope in the very near
future. Whether or not this is true hasn't been officially confirmed yet
(at least not in any sort of press release that I've heard about); even
the band seems to be a bit confused as to what is going on, as Levi Levi
has indicated that they are history, while Cinderella Pussie has rather
emphatically denied that anything of the sort has happened. It looks as
though we're all going to have to wait for a definitive answer from the
people at Interscope.

Q: Where did all of those samples come from?
A: Obviously, there are far too many samples to pick be listed in the
context of this FAQ. The best places to refer to for information, though,
would be either Sanitarium Borderline (where a TKK sample list can be
found) or rec.music.industrial (where individual questions can often be
answered, and which is also a commmon source of Peter Cigehn's immense
sample lists; he can be contacted at Peter....@um.erisoft.se).

Q: Are they touring right now?
A: This changes so much from month to month that it really isn't worth
trying to include in the FAQ. Sanitarium Borderline and r.m.i. are the
best places to look, though the PollStar or TicketMaster also appear to be
fairly reliable sources for this sort of information as well. Their Web
pages are located at the following addresses:

Pollstar: http://www.pollstar.com/pollstar/search.html
TicketMaster: http://www.ticketmaster.com

Q: Are any of the band members gay?
A: This question gets asked about pretty much every band on the face of
the planet, doesn't it? For what it's worth, though, Groovie Mann frankly
(HA!) admits to his homosexuality; Buzz and his boyfriend (Tom) were
briefly mentioned in the November 95 article in Raygun; and Beat Mistress
has stated in at least one interview that she has more or less "tried
everything", and that the rest of the band seems pretty open to all sorts of
experimentation along similar lines. Given the ambiguous sense of
sexuality that is prevalent in most TKK songs, though, this really isn't
much of a surprise, is it?

Q: Who is Doreen?
A: I haven't the foggiest idea. Maybe you should ask the crazy guy in
Honolulu. (Yep, this is supposed to mystify and impress you with my
superhuman knowledge of the band...)

Q: What TKK resources are available online?
A: All sorts of good stuff is out there if you know where to look... a
quick run-down follows:

WWW: http://pulsar.cs.wku.edu/~draven/tkk.html (TKK homepage)
http://www.webfire.com/cgi-bin/tkk/lsearch.pl (lyric search)
http://www.tvtrecords.com (TVT's very own Web page)
FTP site: ftp.uwp.edu
TKK mailing list: t...@i1.net
IRC: #tkkfan
Usenet: rec.music.industrial, alt.music.mlwttkk

The Web page, Sanitarium Borderline, is full of all sorts of TKK
goodies, including scans of cover art, photos from live performances,
interviews with the band conducted by members of the online community,
tour dates, news about the band and other good stuff.
The lyric keyword search page, on the other hand, lets you search for
a given keyword in any TKK song, as well as specifying the desired type
of output, be it a simple list of songs, the associated lines or the
complete lyrics for any track involving the related keyword.
TVT Records has (recently?) jumped on the WWW bandwagon and set up a
Web page for all of their drooling customers to frequent in search of
news, information and nifty links. Sadly, there isn't much there for TKK
fans, but at least you can deluge them with mail demanding the re-release
of all of the old Wax Trax! stuff which is no longer in print and get put
on the Wax Trax! mailing list.
The FTP site is the place where song lyrics from all of your favourite
bands, including the Thrill Kill Kult, can be found in huge quantities.
The /pub/music/lyrics/m/my.life.with.the.thrill.kill.kult/ directory is
the one to look under for all of the lyrics that have been compiled to
date; a lot of these files are also available on the Web page. This FAQ
will be available in the /pub/music/faqs directory very shortly (I know I
keep promising that... I'll get around to fixing the headers Real Soon
Now).
In order to subscribe to the TKK mailing list, a subjectless message
with the words "subscribe tkk" (without the quotation marks) should be
sent to majo...@i1.net; all future postings to the list, however,
should be sent through the address listed above.
An IRC channel, #tkkfan, is generally kept open for meetings of any
Thrill Kill Kult fans who happen to be into the real-time conversation
thing. It doesn't have a bot in place to maintain ops for any specific
person, but it does look as though it is the meeting-place of choice for
the occasional list-wide IRC gathering. These dates are normally made
known at least a couple of days ahead of time to ensure that as many
people as possible are able to participate in the festivities.
Until recently, the only Usenet newsgroup where one stood much of a
chance of seeing any TKK-related postings was rec.music.industrial; this
recently changed with the creation of alt.music.mlwttkk, a group which
doesn't appear to have terribly wide propogation so far (read: there are
basically no postings to it at the moment). Hopefully, traffic will pick
up a bit in the near future.
And then, of course, there is the band... they don't have one central
account, but a few of them have crept online and are around if you know
where to look. Please don't ask, as I wouldn't be in a position to pass
on any of their e-mail addresses even if I did know them... which I
might. Heh.

Q: Where can I contact any of the labels mentioned so far in this FAQ?
A: In addition to being sources of all sorts of TKK-related material, the
labels listed below are excellent places to look for other outstanding
industrial material as well. In no particular order, the people to write
to/call/e-mail are:

Wax Trax! Records
1659 N. Damen Avenue
Chicago, IL 60647
phone: 312 252 1000
fax: 312 252 1007
e-mail: waxtr...@aol.com
In spite of the e-mail address listed on all recent Wax Trax! releases
(waxt...@aol.com), the odd posting has been made to r.m.i. from the one
listed above, while I've never received any sort of reply to any mail
sent to the latter. From the looks of things, there aren't going to be
any new TKK releases from these folks in the near future, though much of
their back catalogue is still available by mail order. Also, as noted
above, TVT (which owns Wax Trax!) has recently set up a Web site -- with
some Wax Trax!-specific information on it -- which can be located at
http://www.tvtrecords.com.

Interscope Records
10900 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 1230
Los Angeles, CA 90024
phone: 213 208 6547
The Kult's current label, these would be the people to talk to about the
current status of the band. Their distribution is wide enough that pretty
much any record store should be able to order whatever post-_Sexplosion!_
releases you're looking for, so long as they're still in print.

Cleopatra Records
8726 S. Sepulveda, Suite D-82
Los Angeles, CA 90045
e-mail: cleo...@tunanet.com
WWW: http://www.hallucinet.com:80/cleopatra
PLEASE NOTE: Cleo used to have an online account with the Cyberden, which
has since been absorbed by Hallucinet, hence the new URL for the Web page.
These are the people to contact regarding the availability of any
Electric Hellfire Club material released so far. Like Wax Trax!, they
haven't been too good at returning e-mail messages so far, so mail order
might be the way to go.

Re-Constriction Records
4901-906 Morena Boulevard
San Diego, CA 92117-3432
fax: 619 483 7414
e-mail: chase (gch...@ucsd.edu)
WWW: http://www.fiu.edu:80/~wjones01/recon.html
The guy to talk to about several of Linda LeSabre's guest appearances
mentioned above, Chase has been really good about replying to his e-mail
in the past, and occasionally mails out free stuff to anybody who is
interested in knowing more about the label. And what a Web page!

Invisible Recordings
P.O. Box 16008
Chicago, IL 60616
WWW: http://www.spontaneous.com/scol/invisible
Home to Pigface and a number of lesser-known acts, Invisible is the label
to contact regarding the availability of several releases which feature
guest appearances by several of your favourite Kult members.

Unless otherwise stated, all of the mailing addresses and phone/fax
numbers listed above are based in the United States, so don't forget to
take that into account when trying to get in touch with those labels. Web
page URLs are also assumed to be case-sensitive.

Q: Ed Regis?
A: Okay, so he has nothing whatsoever to do with the band; I cite him in
everything else that I write, though, so why not?

Q: What else is there to know about this FAQ?
A: Not a whole lot. Once again, if you're thinking of using any part of
this document in a posting/scholarly work of your own, you're free to do
so, though I wouldn't mind knowing about it (getting some credit for my
writing would be nice!). I can be contacted at tmcl...@uoguelph.ca, and
you really won't have to try all that hard to wheedle my blessings out of
me, so drop me a line, okay? Corrections and updates should be sent to
the same address.
If you're looking for a copy of the latest version of the FAQ, it will
be posted monthly (usually on the 15th) on rec.music.industrial,
alt.music.alternative and alt.music.mlwttkk; other newsgroups (including
one or two of the *.answers groups, I hope) will probably be added to
this list over the course of the next few weeks. In the event that you
can't the FAQ anywhere else, e-mail me at tmcl...@uoguelph.ca, and I'll
see about getting a copy of the latest edition that I have on-hand out to
you as soon as possible.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Looking for discography maintainer!
-----------------------------------------------------

STILL PAGING SBO...@NYX.CS.DU.EDU!
I'm going to make one last shot at contacting the maintainer of the TKK
discography before taking it over and incorporating it into this FAQ; if
you are, or have ever, maintained "Ride the Mindway!", the discography
which can be found at Sanitarium Borderline, please contact me ASAP... I
need to know what is going on with this document before I stomp all over
your work and pervert it so that it fits in with the rest of this FAQ.
Thanks for your time.
