THE SHODDY DEATH IN JUNE DISCOGRAPHY
"well, here's some added info on the shoddy death in june
discography:" -- caroliner
put together by Stewart Tame

with a little help from:
Dave (gi...@Forsythe.Stanford.EDU)
caroliner (alien...@maple.circa.ufl.edu)

Version 3.1
(Last revised July 16, 1993)
Background: Death In June is Douglas Pearce. There have been other members
at times but he's the only member who's remained constant.
DIJ is loosely affiliated with Current 93, Sol Invictus,
Strawberry Switchblade, Sixth Comm, Coil and probably
half a dozen other really cool bands. They seem to borrow
members from each other whenever they need the extra
players. Musically, DIJ reminds me a bit of what little
I've heard of Dead Can Dance. It's also somewhat similar
to Coil, particularly the early Coil albums. If you
like your music dark and moody, DIJ are definitely worth
checking out. Among the members of other bands who've
worked on DIJ projects are:
David Tibet of Current 93
Rose McDowall of Strawberry Switchblade
John Balance of Coil
Tony Wakeford of Sol Invictus
Boyd Rice who has recorded both as himself
and as Non
The discography is divided into 4 parts. The first
two sections list DIJ albums and singles respectivley.
The third section lists compilations on which DIJ
have appeared. The final section briefly lists--
since Pearce *is*, after all, only one person--any
non-DIJ projects that he may have played for.

I. ALBUMS:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brown Book 1987
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Format: LP
New European Recordings BAD VC 11 LP
I'm assuming that the lineup for this disk was the same as
the lineup for the CDs where the various tracks appear
(_Cathedral of Tears_ and _The Corn Years_) which means
Douglas P., David Tibet, Rose McDowall, Andrea James,
Gary Carey, Bee, John Balance, Jan O', David Tiffen and
J.R.P. Thanks to Dave for the info on this album.
Track listing:
Heliage Tod

Burn Again
----------------------------------------------------------------
Burial 1984
----------------------------------------------------------------
Format: LP
Same as above. All I know about this LP is that tracks from
it appear on _The Guilty Have No Past_ and _Lesson 1: Misanthropy_.
In the liner notes for TGHNP it says, "For the purpose of these
recordings DEATH IN JUNE was Tony Wakeford, Patrick Leagas and
Douglas P." The track listing is obviously not complete but these
are the only ones known. In addition to a normal release there
was also a limited edition release on clear vinyl.

Two versions of this exist. One is in the usual CD jewelbox
and the other is in a cardboard folder with an all white cover
and gold, embossed lettering with the album title and DIJ
logo. Performers (besides Douglas himself) include: Simon
Norris and James Mannox-additional keyboards, percussion
and vocals on tracks 5, 6 and 9; Campbell Finley-trumpet on
tracks 3, 6 and 11; Michael Cashmore-lead guitar and keyboards
on track 8; David Tibet-lead vocals tracks 5 and 10, backing
vocals on tracks 7, 9 and 12. Lyrics to all songs are included
in the liner notes. German, Italian and French translations
are provided.

New European Recordings BAD VC CD 34
Most of the songs from this one originally appeared on _The World
That Summer_ or _Brown Book_. However, the title track is
credited in the liner notes as "recorded 'live' at Bar Maldoror,
London 29th May, 1991." Personnel for that track at least were
Douglas P., David Tibet and James Mannox. Lyrics to most of
the songs appear in the liner notes.

Carey, Bee, John Balance, Jan O', David Tiffen and J.R.P.
This CD is "Dedicated to the memory of Michael Smith who
died on 20th January 1989." Lyrics to most songs are in the
liner notes.

Maldoror is the only one I know of who's heard of this. It's
supposed to be a limited edition of 666, "of which 333 were
released." Sound quality isn't supposed to be good but it's
live DIJ material from 81-86. Personnel are Pearce, Wakeford,
someone Maldoror identifies as "O'Kill", Tibet and Rose.
This is supposed to be an official bootleg or something similar.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Guilty Have No Past 1989
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Format: Compact Disk
New European Recordings BAD VC CD 3
Some of the tracks on this disk originally appeared on the
LPs _The Guilty Have No Pride_ and _Burial_. Release date
for this CD is unknown but "all tracks were recorded between
1981-83." For the purpose of this recording DIJ was Tony
Wakeford, Patrick Leagas and Douglas P.

New European Recordings BAD VC 3
Nothing is known about this album except for the track listing
and the lineup (Douglas P., Tony Wakeford and Patrick Leagas.)
The tracks that I know of were re-released on _The Guilty Have
No Past_. I don't know if any more tracks were on the album
or not.

All of these tracks appear variously on the first two
singles (I don't think I have titles for either) and
_Burial_ and _The Guilty Have No Past_. I would imagine
that the lineup of Pearce, Wakeford and Leagas applies
here. Thanks to Dave and caroliner for the track listings.

CD: New European Recordings BAD VC CD 13
All songs were written and recorded 1984-85. For this album
DIJ were Douglas P., Patrick Leagas and Richard Butler. Someone
called "Tibet 93" is listed as a "special collaborator." I think
this is David Tibet of Current 93. The CD version of this album
(the only one I've seen) includes 4 bonus tracks. Lyrics to all
songs are included in the liner notes, though the lyrics to "Crush
My Love" appear under the heading "Crush My Soul." A remix of
"Behind the Rose (Fields of Rape)" appears on _The Corn Years_.
There are loop grooves on both sides of the LP so that the end
of each song repeats constantly until you take the needle off.
Words scratched into the vinyl are "no sense makes sense!" and
"we aim to please with constant unease." Thanks to Deanna for
these last two sentences' worth of info.

All of these tracks appear on _Nada!_. This may just be a
single but the person who sent me the info didn't say so.
The lineup is (I'm guessing) Douglas P., Patrick Leagas,
Richard Butler and David Tibet (under the nom de plume
"Tibet 93".) Thanks to Dave for this info.
Track listing:

Format: LP (limited edition of 111)
I don't know anything at all about this but Maldoror
swears it exists. It was released about six months before
_But, What Ends When the Symbols Shatter?_. Supposedly
contains live tracks and remixes.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh How We Laughed 1987
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Format: LP and Compact Disk
LP: EYAS Media EYAS 011
CD: EYAS Media EYAS 1013
At first I thought this was a bootleg but it turns out to be an
official release after all. It was recorded live in May of 1982
although the crowd noises have been carefully cut off at the ends
of the songs. All of the songs appear (in studio versions) on
_The Guilty Have No Past_. I don't have a CD player handy at the
moment so I can't match up bootleg titles with the real ones.
I'll try to have this corrected on future versions of this
discography. Worth noting: the packaging is different on the CD
than the LP. The CD has almost nothing about the band but
advertises other EYAS Media releases instead. Someone who has
the album reports that the back cover has an article from
_Sounds_ dated 5 DEC 1987. The front cover of the LP shows
"A Pig facsed [sic] drummer". The cover of the CD is a silhouette
of someone forging something on an anvil. I *do* have one report
from someone with a CD copy of this with the drummer instead of
the anvil.

The LP was a limited edition. All songs on the album appear on

I'll hazard a guess that the lineup is the same as that of _The
Corn Years_, that is: Douglas P., David Tibet, Rose McDowall,
Andrea James, Gary Carey, Bee, John Balance, Jan O', David
Tiffen and J.R.P. Songs from this album also appear--in
slightly different versions in some cases--on _Cathedral of
Tears_ and _The Corn Years_. There are phrases scratched into
the vinyl near the center of each disk. They read (starting
from Disk 1, side 1): "one is the number/anonymous in glory/
lover is now empty.../and incomplete." Many thanks to Deanna
for this info.

. . . and one mystery CD, about which Mike (mds...@ucdavis.edu) has to say:
" BTW, that Death In JUne/Current 93/Sol Invictus split CD is a live
album from '91 (exact date is on CD) in some venue (exact venue is on CD)
and what it is involves Sol Invictus doing some songs live but that's
after the Current 93/Death in June (ie, the two bands together, I guess)
playing live. I think C93/DIJ play for 7 or 9 tracks, then Sol Invictus
do the remaining 7 or 6 tracks or so. It's distributed by World Serpent
(ie, the people who distribute/do C93, Nurse, and all those other
incestuous kids who are probably just schitzophrenic parties of David
Tibet and Steven Stapleton."
Anyone know the disc he's talking about? Doesn't sound like anything I
have in the discog so far.

The track listings are identical except that the picture disk
lists "The Calling" and the 12" lists "The Calling (Mk. II)."
Anyone know if these are the same or not? A version of "The
Calling" appears on _Nada!_, as well as the original version
of "Carousel." I've no idea where "Born Again" originally
appeared unless it's a remix (or misspelling) of "Burn Again"
(from _Brown Book_ and _The Cathedral of Tears_)?

One half DIJ and one half Current 93. Thanks to caroliner

edition release on red vinyl. "Fall Apart (Rose Mix)" is
essentially the same as the track on the _Sacred War_
compilation. Scratchings near the center include "never

blessings and blood" (side 2). Thanks to Deanna and Maldoror
for the info.

Apparently this was first issued by 3 Circles with a brown
cover. Then NER re-released it two years later with a white
cover. Dave sent me the info and though what he sent me
implies that there was a 7" (lacking "Holy Water") from NER,
the catalog number he sent me for it was identical to that
of the 12", which doesn't seem too likely. In any case,
the 3C and NER 12" recordings are both identical, just with
different covers, and the 7", if it exists, is missing the
third track.

(Patrick) O'Kill is Patrick Leagas of Sixth Comm.
And now a question: when I was in Paris in january I saw a CD on World Serpent
by a band called "Somewhere in Europe". I seem to remember Douglas P.'s name on
it somewhere or the other. Does anyone know anything about this?
I also saw a CD called "Fire and Ice" (World Serpent again) with a
benevolent-looking clergyman type on the cover. Supposedly this guy is ex-Sol
Invictus. Anyone know this?
I would also be interested to know if Tony Wakeford is indeed a satanist--he has
a pretty little cross hanging upside-down on his black jacket just below his
triple-chin. Just curious... Wakeford's work seems quite intelligent otherwise.

: I also saw a CD called "Fire and Ice" (World Serpent again) with a

The man behind the band is Ian Read, one of the co-founders of Sol Invictus, whohas also worked with DIJ & C-93. Ian Read is also the editor or _Chaos
International_ a magazine dealing with Chaos Magic and related subjects.
Fire & Ice's band members in this incarnation are: Ian Read - vocals, keyboards;Mouse(of PTV fame) - bass, vocals, recorder; W.M Owens - guitars, keyboards.
There is also a new CD ep that should be released in the next week or two
by the IOT-USA titled "Blood on the Snow", which includes one track off the
album, a live track and a remix of a track from the album. This is available
by sending $12.00 to IOT-USA, P.O. Box 619, Huntington Beach, CA 92648 USA. .
Ian Read was in California this last December lecturing on Rune Magic, I got
to catch the lecture, which was excellent and talk to him. A very intelligent,
articulate & likeable fellow.

This is the first time I have heard Tony's name in connection with Satanism, but
according to an interview with him in the magazine _The Fifth Path_ issue 3,
Spring '92, he states that his interest is in Magic and Paganism, esp.
No. European forms, runes, etc. As for him wearing an upside down cross, he
seems to air quite a few antichristian sentiments in the same interview.
