What is the best album of the 90s?

If you had to choose between:

Nirvana, Nevermind
Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Hole, Live Through This
Nine Inch Nails, The Downward Spiral
Celine Dion, Falling into You

Which would you pick and why?

I would pick Nirvana, Nevermind because Kurt Cobain was a great singer
and guitarist, and he used a lot of emotion in his songs.

I won't argue whether Kurt was a good vocalist because that is totally
opinion. But c'mon, a good guitarist? I thought it was pretty well known
that his music contains some of the most simple guitar playing ever
recorded...I mean, name me one song of his that requires any kind of guitar
playing talent.

Celine Dion wins for being less attractive than Courtney ( and thinner)

You idiot. YOu cross-posted this to all the different ngs that you
nominated. The thing is, people are in those NGs BECAUSE THOSE ARE
THEIR FAVORITES, THEREFORE THEY WILL CHOOSE THEM!!! No one will ever
agree... Now we're going to have a huge thread-war that won't die.
Thanks a lot.

This is a tough question.....I'd have to go with NIN, Nirvana and
Smashing Pumpkins........and don't forget Marilyn Manson's "Portrait of
an American Family"......I might think it sucked, but it sure did change
things.

Errrrrr...the choices are 4 hard alternatives and celine dion...not much
of a choice....
If we were to pick 5 genres and one from each genre then I would think
this:

Dance - Jocelyn Enriquez "Lovely" 1994
Pop - Paula Abdul "Spellbound" 1991
Adult Contemporary - Celine Dion "The Colour of my love" 1993
R&B - Toni Braxton "Secrets" 1996
Soft Rock - Alanis Morissette "Jagged Little Pill" 1995
Hard Rock/Alternative - Pearl Jam "Vitalogy" 1995
Country - Shania Twain "The woman in me" 1995

In terms of singles:

Dance - Fantasy / Mariah Carey 1995
Pop - Rush Rush / Paula Abdul 1995
Adult Contemporary - Because you loved me / Celine Dion 1996
R&B - That's the way love goes / Janet Jackson 1993
Soft Rock - You oughta know / Alanis Morissette 1995
Hard Rock/Alternative - Black Hole Sun / Soundgarden 1994
Country - Blue / LeAnn Rhimes 1996

Anyone else?

:+)

Who cares how much thinner you can drink? One time, back in Ancient
Mesopotamia, I had this little pet frog, and when you kicked him he would
spray pizza toppings out of his nostrils. It reminded me of Jebediah
Springfield's spinach casserole, at least in a geometric sense.

Courtney Love not only swims in vats of disk drives, she can bench press
Marcel Duchamp with her eyes closed! Let's see a briefcase-salesman like
Celine Dion pull off a feat like that!

I would pick the fellow with the giant hands. I heard something about his
album collapsing into itself. It was something about old daisy-chained
printers and recursive dreaming. Then he was always so stiff that you could
laugh about what he'd do with a dome. It reminds me of the time I played an
organ backwards. Every moment was brittle popcorn.

It's all a question of perception isn't it, so take these remarks how
you will... but saying that the Smashing Pumpkins, Hole and Nine Inch
Nails are the same genre, and then presenting these seven as seven
separate genres seems ludicrous to me. Besides "alternative" being a
useless categorisation ("Black Hole Sun"?!?), you've selected seven
pop songs here, with the possible exception of LeAnn Rhimes. I don't
think you can categorise to this extent. My favorite albums of the
'90s so far would be:

"Ritual De Lo Habitual" - Jane's Addiction 1990
"Flood" - They Might Be Giants 1990
"Goo" - Sonic Youth 1990
"Achtung Baby" - U2 1991
"Nevermind" - Nirvana 1991
"Badmotorfinger" - Soundgarden 1991(?)
"BloodSugarSexMagic" - Red Hot Chili Peppers 1991
"This Is Not The Way Home" - The Cruel Sea 1992
"Dry" - P. J. Harvey 1992
"Check Your Head" - The Beastie Boys 1992
2nd album - Pearl Jam 1992(?)
"Copper Blue" - Sugar 1992
"Blue Lines" - Massive Attack 1992
"Debut" - Bjork 1993
"Ingenue" - k. d. lang 1993
"Together Alone" - Crowded House 1993
"Last Splash" - The Breeders 1993
"The Downward Spiral" - Nine Inch Nails 1994
"Live Through This" - Hole 1994
"Siamese Dream" - Smashing Pumpkins 1994
"So Tonight That I Might See" - Mazzy Star 1994
"Hi Fi Way" - You Am I 1995
"Garbage" - Garbage 1995
"Maxinquaye" - Tricky 1995
"Hourly, Daily" - You Am I 1996
"Odelay" - Beck 1996
"Tu Plang" - Regurgitator 1996

it's pretty hard to choose. did nevermind even come out in the 90s? i
thought it was in 89 but i might be wrong. yeah, probably. oh well, i
know i wouldn't pick hole... there are some good songs, but not all that
much talent. courtney love seems to have gone on to acting, which i
think think she is better at than songwriting. regretibly, i'm not very
familiar with either celine dion nor smashing pumpkins... i've heard the
pumpkins album once and celine dion never at all, so it's pretty much
between nevermind and nin... nin put out a great album, but it can't
really compare to nevermind. every song on nevermind is (in my own
personal opinion) memorable and great.... it also paved the road for
many popular bands today. nin certainly wasnt the first popular
industrial band, although they've gone out to a lot of different fans,
they haven't made industrial music popular the way nirvana made grunge
(or whatever kind of music you want to call it that they played)
popular. if you asked me to decide between in utero and broken, it would
have been a tougher choice.

I'd have to say that Phil Collins album featuring duets with Gloria

I wouldn't say it deserves ALL the accolades it got.. I stand by my
assertion that Mellow Gold is MUCH better. I certainly listen to it
more. Odelay is too light, too slick, too sequenced; there's no
"Truckdrivin Neighbors Downstairs" or "Whiskeyclone" on Odelay, and
"Minus" is nowhere near as good as "Mutherfuker".

But, yeah, Beck is still the man and all. His dancing skillz alone
prove that.

Sure, but there's no 'New Pollution' or 'Jackass' or 'Rockin The Catskills'
on Mellow Gold, either. Overall, sure it's a slicker production, but then
again...that's what Beck was after and it was a perfect affair (Beck and Dust
Bros).

PS - Anyone heard about The Good, The Bad and The Ugly yet??? It's a producer
supergroup featuring Mike Simpson (Dust Bros), Prince Paul (PM Dawn) and K.
Takemura (Dr. Octagon). There is a debut album coming ou in September.

Gotta go with Smashing Pumpkins but not MCIS, I'm still in love with
Gish. As far as making a "change" I have to say Nirvana. I don't care for
them but they did blow open the music scene. Marylin Masin is doing the
same, I think, right now.

It would be none of these. My personal choice would be:
1. Mariah Carey, Mariah Carey: Combine some of the greatest songs ever
written with the amazing singing talent of a 20 year old Mariah, and you
have the best album ever.
2. Madonna, Erotica : This is Madonna's at her artistic best:
adventurous, daring, innovative and sexy. You can never get tired of this
one
3. Celine Dion : D'eux. Although completely in French, this album
captures Celine's vocal dexterity as none of her English stuff has ever
had.

Now I want to ask you:

WHO DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST NEW SOLO ARTIST OF THE 90'S ?
Toni Braxton
Mariah Carey
Celine Dion
Alanis Morissette
etc...

Yeah, Gish is to die for. I'm curious how Marilyn Manson is blowing open
the music scene? Are they bringing on an entire new wave of carbon copies
of themselves? Ick. Other picks are anything by Crackerbash, Pond's first
album, Gern Blanston "Gern Blanston", anything by Elliott Smith, Brainiac
"Bonzai Superstar", Public Enemy "Fear of a Black Planet", Babes in
Toyland "Fontanelle", anything by Afghan Whigs, and King Black Acid's
"Womb Star Session".

Don't even mention pop posers like celine dion for best album!!! If I
chose, it'd be Nirvana:Nevermind in first, because that changed the
music scene so much, plus it had very emotionally deep songs, Lithium is
still my alltime favorite song. Second would be NIN's the Downward
Spiral, even though I think NIN scares me too much :p But the whole
story about the man going through the Downward Spiral in life as the
theme, making it a story, really proves that Reznor is a worthy artist.
THird would be Hole: Live Through this. I like it because it is a
sincere album, and it deals with true pain, not like a lot of bubble gum
alternative bands that we have today.

fouth out of them would be Siamese Dream.

IRON CLONE here putting in his two cents. Well you wanna know what the
coolest album of the 90's is? I'ts gotta be Siamese Dream all the way baby!
Think about it. It's got cool lyrics, cool guitaring, cool basing, cool
drumming, cool singing, a cool cover, cool song titles, cool cd art,and
cool hidden messages in the songs(Quiet, Hummer, Soma, and Spaceboy).

Hey! It's the alternative rock Pain Derby! *Real* alternative music
deals with "true pain", as opposed to "pop posers" or "bubblegum
alternative". With this simple truth in your hearts, arranging albums
in objective order comes easy.

1. Nirvana - pretty obvious, really.
2. NIN - must be painful since its "scary", and since the album 'The
Downward Spiral' describes a man on, like, a downward spiral. Pretty
clever, that.
3. Hole - "deals with true pain": what greater recommendation?
4. Smathing Pumpkins - pain by association, at least.

It's looking bad for the other alterna-greats, though. We have to hope
Eddie Vedder loses his whole family in a horrific tractor accident, so
he can make sincere, painful records too. Failing that, a few nasty
paper cuts would be enough to push him up the ladder.

IRON CLONE will catch disease from fruit fly's while he spins a web of any
size. Actually I won't. I'm just here to throw in my two cents if it's
welcome and if it's not you can kiss my asphalt. Well you wanna know
coolest album of the ninties? No? Well I'm gonna tell you anyway. Hmm.
It's gonna be Siamese Dream all the way baby! Say that with gusto!
Well it's got cool guitaring, cool basing, cool drumming, cool singing,
cool layout and art, cool fonts, cool cd art, and above all cool hidden
messages. Coming in a close second is Mellon Collie and the Infinate
Sadness (there is a theme).

Type O Negative are goth. Still I don't have any reason to get
back to the early 90s. In fact the late 80s and early 90s probably
were the worst period in music, at least after the emerge of
Beatles. Thanks to people like Dodgy, Blur, Lightning Seeds and
Oasis (Many others too....) things are looking a lot better now.

Come again?? Goth music die down??? On which planet did it ever become

I don't really hear too many people discussing Lycia, London After Midnight,
Black Tape For A Blue Girl, Ascension, Christian Death or any other Goth

how is marylin manson changing the music scene at all? There have always
been good shows, and there has been satanic music for a long time. MM's
just the first popular band of this kind, which is really just combining

I have to go with Chris on this, Siamese Dream (at least for the 90s) . .
don't think "Empire Records" is that great, and I haven't heard "Romeo
and Juliet" yet (not all of it), but compilation albums with many groups
tend not to have the continuity and flow that an album made by one band
has. I've always considered Nevermind to be more influential then
good. Just my 2 cents.

I would have to say my favorite is....none of the above. I think the late
Selena's album, "Dreaming of You," is the best album of the 90's. Also,
Mariah Carey's, "Music Box", was excellent.

cross-posted all over the fucking shop, including to the alt.fan. and
alt.music groups of Carey, Dion, etc. Hence stuff like the above.

Spice Girls, I agree, though you'll notice that most of the postings
are from people saying they suck. As for Nirvana and SP: you may not
think they're alternative (although 'Bleach' on release definitely
was, even by your definition) but most people who post to here
obviously think they are, and in order to avoid huge and pointless
arguments you should probably go along with this connotative meaning
of 'alternative'. You may want to read alt.music.independent for more

If a band is alternative only until they get a gold or platinum album,
then this newsgroup would be impossible to use. Unless someone -
perhaps you, dear Sir - would care to post regular sales figures so we
know when exactly to stop discussing a band.

Narrow-minded? Surely not. There are loads of excellent albums which
are released on CD only: most Japanese avant-rock and noise has either
incredibly limited (and therefore expensive) vinyl releases or none at
all. Ditto a lot of the European avant-garde. This music is as
alternative and underground as any you'd care to name, it's just that
the countries producing it don't seem to suffer from the vinyl
fetishism which affects so many British and American listeners.

And who's making a few bucks out of your quaint ideas of rebellion?
Some spliffhead with a sweet deal down at the pressing plant who knows
that there's a small but eternal market for any old shit as long as
it's suitably obscure and comes out on - swoon - vinyl?

i don't mean to speak for anyone else, but i for one, and i think a lot
of other people too, understand that alternative is not alternative. K?
We did not name the genre of music, we just like it. Again, don't mean
to speak for anyone else. i've always hated the name, but then again i
don't name these things. i don't quite know if i'm agreeing or
disagreeing, i just found it a little bit offensive that a person would
go insult even the name of a genre of music, especially when the person
doesn't even listen to that genre, as this person has made clear. It is
understood that "alternative" is commerical, mainstream. Oh yeah, can i
ask why narrow minded? why are we narrow minded? am i missing something?
sorry, but i just think people shouldn't insult what they don't know or
understand. By the way, if you don't like the music then why are you
posting about it in the first place? I'm not trying to be mean or harsh
or whatever, i am just stating my opinion. i'm sure you are too, but i
can have my opinion on your opinion and blah blah blah i need to shut
up, it's a free something or other. I personally have always disagreed
with the name but My point: don't tell us that the name "alternative" is
false or misleading, tell the corporate bigwigs who market the music as
alternative, alright?

Well, compared to what is being discussed in THIS group they sure
are rather alternative :-)

we have to draw the line somewhere,

I would pick Nirvana Nevermind as the best album, my second choices would
be, 16stone, Anti-christ superstar and Inutero

Beck, Matthew Sweet, NIN and The Dave Matthews Band have all been in the

The best album is "Tested" by Bad Religion. The next is "Evil Empire"
by Rage Against The Machine" . Third would be "Anti-Christ Superstar"
by Marilyn Manson.

Best album of the 90's was Even As We Speak's "Feral Pop Ecstacy" on
Sarah records. All aspects of modern pop fully integrated into a
succulent whole.

Best Album is Gotta a Mind To Travel - Coco Montoya
Followed closely by the self titled album by Johnny Lang
This is of course if you are looking for music and not noise, pop crap,
or some soon to be wealthy 20 somethings whining about how miserable
life is.

Sarah records? get that impotent pop BS out of here. -not that pop as a
whole is just *bad* by my standards (hell, i totally love 0pb - how pop
are they?) but god...that's too light. i might as well listen to teenage
fanclub...which i'm sure you probably do, as all sarah record's fans
seem to..along with Halobit and the Softies and a lot of other bland,
unmoving, worthless music.
...not that there's anything WRONG with that.
