Well, I haven't finished listening to it yet, but I wanted to point out
that they've been working with Flood for quite some time - at least since
People Are People, I think, and they've done some excellent things with
him, particularly the import 12" for Stripped...

I completely aggree. If I could - I'd return the album. It looks like
the "mainstream" appeal (or something) got to them. It sounds NOTHING
like you'd expect Depeche Mode to sound. Why mess with something that
works? My first reaction after listening to the album was "That sucks!".
I guess I'll just have to replay "Some Great Reward" a few more
times - - my favorite DM album.

Err... right, sure. Just a point here. Flood did NOT produce "Achtung

produced it, while Mark Stent mixed it. And how, pray tell, have the band
"sold out" to their producer?

I think it is possibly their finest album to date. And that's after a good
two months with it. Keep listening, you might learn something. :-)

The new album has more depth and sonic sculpture than I have ever heard
before. Yes "Some Great Reward" was excellent in the context of the mid 80's,
but this is Depeche all grownup, they have mastered the studio and added
more depth withcopius guitar samples, piano scores, strings etc.
After severallistens, I am convinced this is their best effort and already
my favorite album OF ALL TIME for it's consistent mastery of any genre they
attempt.

Let me add my two grain of salt to all this 'the new album sucks' thread;
first of all, I follow the Depeche Mode career since the early beginning
(circa 1982), and I always find that they evolved each time they put
a new album out... Let say, at first, Speak & Spell was naive (both
in lyrics & musically) and used what we now call vintage synths. When
Vince Clark left, Gore took his place in composition role, and then
we got A Broken Frame, which was very different than S&S. Each
new album introduced new components, like real guitars (remember
Love in itself.4?), and new form of synthesizing (they got better after
all!). In my view, the approach changed, but the 'Mode' principals
to music still the same.
Violator was as much different to Music for the Masses that was
ABF to S&S. New technology, introduce new styles... For this album
they used live instruments, and samplers... Less synths, but who cares
the musical bases is the same as all of their albums. Same minors chords
(except GRWM), same black/pessimistic approach, same 'mode'.
What is different is again the use of different instrument/technology. We
can't blame them for this, they're rich, they can buy S-770 by the
dozens...
For myself, I found many links in musical styles between Halo and In Your
Room for exemple. Higher Love can be compared to some tunes on
Music for the Masses (Sacred comes to mind).
Hey! I remember my ex-girlfriend, who's a classical pianist telling me
that their stuff before Violator was simple (musically), and most of
the time, she didn't even needed music sheets to replay most of the songs
on her synthesizers. Now, she tell me that musically, their songs are
much more complex, both musically and stucturally. They sharped their
musical approach, and I think they succeeded... For my part, this
album will be a classic in the Depeche Mode career.
I just love it.
BTW, I'm french-speaking, so sorry for any english errors, mistakes, etc,

Well, you may notice that Flood also produced "Violator", and the two albums,
IMHO, sound very different. He's a great producer; he also did, for instance,
the Charlatans UK's "Between 10th and 11th"., as well as a hell of a lot else.
As For "Songs ...", I say GIVE IT TIME. The album was written not to slap
you in the face with licks, like say, "Black Celebration" (still my fav.
album), but to grow on you, and become personal. If you like DM for their
actual music, yes, you may be disappointed, but if you like them for the
mood they create with their songs, this is a FANTASTIC ALBUM.
I love it.

The drums on "I Feel You" are sampled, but there are live drums on another
track on the album, "In Your Room". Yep, it's a first.
Yup. Can you please ask them if they're coming down to New Zealand again? I
missed them last time they came and I want to see them really badly. I heard
they might be coming back at the end of the year. Thanks in advance.
Gregor.
I am so tired of reading about how bad the new DM is, and how much
"Condemnation" sucks. First of all, "Condemnation" is an EXCELLENT song,
both lyrically and musically. David Gahan's voice and range have grown to
an extraordinary level-just compare with Speak and Spell. Second of all,
for all those who were expecting a techno dance album or a Violator II,
and think this album sucks because it isn't, should be thankful it isn't.
If they had put out EXACTLY what you had wanted, you'd be whining about
how predictable they've become or how they've become mainstream and sold
out or some stupid crap like that. To put out an album of this caliber,
doind JUST what they WANT to do, instead of what the people want, only
increases my respect for them. Their music is growing in complexity, just
what most techo/dance albums lack. If you want to see how they've grown,
get a copy of their sheet music book, Anthology, and look at the songs.
I'm telling you, Songs of Faith and Devotion are just that: faith and
devotion to do what Martin, David, and the guys WANT to do. I hope their
next album is a cover of Handel's Messiah if that's what they want to do.
Maybe they'll go polka or reggae. It doesn't matter.

Ah...a voice of reason! My initial reaction to "Condemnation" was one of
surprise, since it seemed so different form what I'd been expecting (given
DM's past tendency towards snythy pop and Violotor's "cold" sound, and
even "I Feel You's" style). However, the more I listen to it, the more I
find it's one of my favorite songs from DM. It has real, powerful,
emotion.

I agree completely. This album could have declared the "death of Depeche
Mode" by their falling into a predictable style of music. It even breaks
with the synth-only image that has become almost synonymous with DM.
Instead, it lead them in a new direction, with powerful music that has all
the feeling that Violator lacked.
why not just listen to george michael instead of DM?

I agree with you about "Some Great Reward" being their best album, but
come on now--did you really think "Songs of.." is that bad. Yes, it is
a little different, but it is still a great album. I admit, I was
expecting a "Violator II", but I really enjoy the new album. The only
bad thing about "Songs of..." is that most of the songs aren't as
dancable or as suitable for radio play as those from "Violator". The
title "Songs of Faith and Devotion" fits the album well. The lyrics are
much more meaningful and a little more religious. "In Your Room" is the
only song besides "I Feel You" that I can see getting any radio play.

I don't know. Maybe I felt that the single "I Feel You" was false
advertizement for the album. When I bought the album I was hoping
that the rest of it would sound like that instead of like george

according to the interview in Details magazine, Martin became a father
recently and as a result "his lyrics are little more meaningful and
sensible....not quite so pervy" :D [that's a paraphrase from one of the
other band members, but they did use the phrase "not quite so pervy"]

Just because they don't keep making music that conforms to the musical
boundaries that you have set for them, don't assume that they've no idea
what they are doing. On the contrary, they've never sounded more focused.
If you want "Some Great Reward" or "Music For The Masses" or whatever all
over again, then don't impose on the band to record a carbon copy for you.
The albums are still around for your repeated enjoyment.

Why not listen to BOTH? (Sorry, I'll admit it, and if this makes me NON

I like George Michael's later stuff... Wham! was fluff, but Listen w/o

In the Details interview, Martin says that he has a sort of fascination with
Androgny. But yes, both Martin and Andy Fletcher (I think - or was it Alan?)

well, to my knowledge, *none* of them are gay, but does it matter?
(I'll admit to having a curious streak about things like this with
many of my favorite performers: "are they married?", "are they gay?")
Unfortunately, there seems to be this connection that we Americans
make between British performers/musicians and homosexuality --
I have no idea where it comes from.....?
Although it doesn't really mean anything, Dave's been married
(at least) twice that I know of, and as stated above, Martin recently
became a father, although that doesn't mean anything either.

IMHO, there's still a sense of domination in the song In Your Room.

Don't believe everything you hear. Weren't people also saying Trent

In an interview in the UK version of "Smash Hits" around the time of "Some
Great Reward", the band were interviewed as a group and spent a good deal

As I said, they were teasing him about it. Nothing was stated as truth or
fact. And Smash Hits *did* enjoy making insinuations about their favorite
stars... :-)
