People out there should take a listen to a song released three years ago
by a Montreal band called the "Men without Hats", called "Sideways".

The guitar riff at the beginning of Nirvana's song, and throughout it
at intervals, is *EXACTLY* the same, to a point that I would litigate.
Request the song from your local radio station and judge for yourself.

Is this "Men w/o Hats" the same Mw/oH that did "Safety Dance" in the early
1980's?

Funny thing is, the riff is damn close to "Godzilla" by Blue Oyster Cult
too.

So are we going to sue Men Without Hats along with Nirvana?

Admittedly he was listening to a _Best of Queen_ tape,
but no conclusions should be drawn from this because all tapes left in a car
for more than about a fortnight metamorphose into _Best of Queen_ albums

I have heard that several people have mentioned taking them to court over SLTS,
but since I have never even heard the song (or Sideways) I can't comment on who
will win.

Steve.

Actually, as the Village Voice Pazz and Jop Review '92 noted, it's also the
same riff as in Boston's "More than a Feeling"...eerily close, in fact.

Yeah, this is the same band. They also did 'Pop goes the world', remember?

The chord-change intervals aren't quite the same.
If you want the exact same riff as "More Than a Feeling", try
"Take 5" by Northside.

I also must concur about "Come as you are" (or whatever it's called)
sounding just like "Living in the 80's", but slowed down. When I first
heard it on the radio, I thought they were playing the 45 at 33 rpm,
and I was waiting for slowed down vocals to enter singing "I'm living
in the 80's".

More Than A Feeling?? Yes i agree with the similarity, but how about comparing
chords in "Teen Spirit" to the Police's "Message in a Bottle"? Sounds silly
?? Listen to "Message..." and try singing the words from "...Spirit" to it!
Now there's an interesting idea for a cover version! (note i didn't say ALL the
chords from message in a bottle are the same as those for smells like teen spi-
rit...)

I don't think that Nirvana ripped off anybody with their chords. They just
tend to use very standard rock&roll chord changes. If you listen closely
enough to many artists, the chord changes are similar if not the same. The
artistry is in the interpretation and the performance.
