I just printed up the first batch of shirts! I had mentioned them on
alt.music.alternative and rec.music.industrial a long time ago. In case
you missed it, here's what they look like.

The front is a reconstructed version of the "U2 Negativland" cover,
in the original 2 colors. The shirt sleeve is the Universal Media
Netweb logo in black. The back is the "Corporate SST Still Sucks
Rock." from page 42 of "The Letter U And The Numeral 2".

I'm going to send 5 shirts to Negativland and 2 shirts to the Copyright
Violation Squad, free.

If you're interested in one, then mail me & I'll get a second printing
together.

Why do you say this? I've had a feeling that SST were a bunch of crooks,
but I haven't heard anything yet that could prove this, except their
high prices of course. Aren't those the one that ripped off a few artists
on their label?

Are we talking about the same SST records that brought us Black Flag,
Minutemen, Husker Du, and many other fine groups? I can believe that
they might be sloppy businesspeople, but crooks...?

It's a play on the SST slogan - SST has grown into a huge company that
employs up to 30 or more people and with assets of 5 million $. They've
ripped off at least a few bands by constantly repackaging older works that
they no longer have the rights to release. They are being sued by The
Meat-Puppets, I think. Plus SST is suing Negativland and I think the Meat
Puppets also. Greg Ginn has issued press releases calling Negativland
yuppies and liars. Ginn has turned SST into a corporate machine as bad
as the ones he claims to hate. There's also accusations that SST has not
reported sales correctly to artists or paid royalties on the actual amounts
of units sold.

I believe that the point of the shirt is that SST promoted the
"Corporate Rock Sucks" slogan. However, when the big boys in the
form of Kasey Kasem and U2's record company and their respective
lawyers starting getting hostile about Negativland's parody record, SST
as Negativeland's record company, was, how can I say this,
was considerably less than supportive.

Sonic Youth also sued them when they signed to DGC for not paying any
royalties for years. A copy of the legal letter was published in their
fan club newsletter with all the addresses blacked out, and "Kitty Poo
Records" substituted for SST. I think SY has gotten all rights back
since they'll be re-releasing everything from _Confusion is Sex_ to
_Daydream Nation_ on DGC in 1993.
