Anyone know where Soundgarden's lead guitarist Kim Thayil hails
from? He has (asian) Indian features. And his last name sounds
like it's southern Indian.

Assumptions, assumptions...he's from Chicago. He is, however, of Indian
descent.

Kim's ethnicity is Indian, but he's an American--he's originally from
Chicago, came out to Seattle and went to school here at University of
Washington (where he got his philosophy degree); met Chris Cornell and
Hiro Yamamoto and the rest is history.--Dave

I believe Kim and Hiro already knew each other before moving on to
Seattle.. I heard they were in the same high school in Chicago..
they then met up with Chris, who at the time was playing drums, hence
the originally three piece band with Cornell drumming and singing..

I believe Kim Thayil is of Tamil extraction. I read this a while
ago on a.m.a.

Um, no, he's not like from Nicaragua, or something... He is very much
an Indian (not American Indian, mind you...)

BTW - I've got a question - what other musicians out there are ethnic
Indian? Here's what I can think of off the top of my head:

Freddy Mercury (1/2 Indian)
Terence Trent d'Arby (some Indian in him... don't remember how, though.)
Tanita Tikaram (duh)
Sonya Madan (echobelly just rocks)

Only half?

I seem to remember TTd'A's Indian blood is of the N. American variety.

The Soup Dragons' bass player Sushil Dade (I'm pretty the band is Sean
Dickson and session players now, though). The bands Cornershop and the
Voodoo Queens are largely composed of British Asians.

Yes, one of his parents was an anglo...

nope... Definitely ethnic Indian. I think he mentions it in his "Neither
Fish nor Flesh" LP (or was it the first LP?)

Cornershop are your basic anglo-indian punk-pop band. Some of there
material is very interesting. They have 2 albums, one is a comp. CD,
the other is a studio (I'll have to double check, but I think thats right).

There are other UK bands, like Fun-Da-Mental, Indian Public Enemy.
Freddie M. is pure Indian, not 1/2.

Indian = east Indian.

Indian as in people whose ancestry is from the Indian subcontinent originally.
Hope this clarifies things a bit...
