"Soldier Talk" (Radar) 1979

Art & Language and The Red Crayola:
"Corrected Slogans" (Music Language) 1976
"Kangaroo?" (Rough Trade) 1981
"Black Snakes" 1983
Recommendations? Originally a wacked-out 60's acid/psych group, then
resurrected when Radar Records reissued there stuff in the midst of
the art punk craze of the late 70's (e.g., Pere Ubu). Mayo Thompson did a
solo record in 1983, but don't know what they've done since then. RC is a
difficult listen, but worth the effort.

I have the LPs Soldier Talk ('79), Kangaroo? ('81), and Black Snakes ('83)
(the latter two with Art & Language). ST is kind of Pere Ubu-esque, which
is not surprising since all of PU appear on it. They and Mission of Burma
are the only two bands I've heard to match Ubu's glory.
Kangaroo? is my favorite - it is somewhat like Henry Cow on their Desperate
Straights LP, but with more humor. BS is similar but more somber, and is my
least favorite of the three.
"They say it's art killed Jackson Pollack -
As if that could be.
In fact he missed a bend
And drove his Ford into a tree."

* SLMR 2.1 * Friends don't let friends read the Haubens
Those are among the band's later releases, but they first got their start
in the late sixties. "Parable of Arable Land" came out in 1967, "God
Bless the Red Crayola and All Who Sail On Her" in 1968, both on the
Int'l Artists label. Tunes from both albums have since been covered--
from "Parable", 'Hurricane Fighter Plane' by Alien Sex Fiend and
'Transparent Radiation' by Spacemen 3; from "God Bless", 'Victory
Garden' by Galaxie 500. They laid low for some time and surfaced next
in 1976 with the first Art & Language collaboration, "Corrected Slogans",
on the Music Language label. The first two albums have since been
reissued on the UK Charly label on one disc. If anyone has information on
how to get a copy, please let me know!
