On Monday (July 19), Staley and his bandmates -- guitarist Jerry Cantrell,
bassist Mike Inez, and drummer Sean Kinney -- the syndicated rock radio show
Rockline, acting like any other normal, goofy rock band, joking with host
Bob Coburn and using humor to sidestep the callers who asked pertinent
questions about the band's future.
Alice In Chains haven't recorded a new album since their 1995 self-titled
outing and haven't toured in nearly that long, Staley's controversial health
seemingly the reason behind the silence. The two new songs appearing on the
forthcoming Box Set (one of which "Get Born Again," is on the just relased
Nothing Safe - Best of the Box), both recorded in 1998, prove Alice still
have their dark power.
Cantrell offered a meatier if no less ambiguous view of the decade-old
band's future than his singer, offering: "We just take it album by album
like we always have. You'll know when we throw it out there, and if we don't
we'll be fishing," he chuckles. "We'll get together when we want to make
some tunes, as long as we're still doing stuff that's valid and that we
enjoy, we'll keep making music."
Meanwhile, Cantrell is at Los Angeles' A&M Studios, working concurrently on
his second and third solo albums, the follow ups to 1998's Boggy Depot. As
to an album's worth of new material from Alice, Cantrell replied tersely,
"We'll let you know."
One way -- sort of -- to hear a new Staley composition is via the new LP
from Seattle band Second Coming (Capitol), where the AIC vocalist receives
writing credit on the last track. "Actually I worked with the brother of the
singer of Second Coming about 12, 13 years ago, and that was that song. And
they put it on their album, so it didn't actually have anything to do with
that band. It was before Alice even got together. It was before us, before
Second Coming," Staley relates.
"They just threw that on there so they'd have some claim-to-fame type deal
with their record. I don't mind saying that, 'cause the singer ripped me
off. Punk!" Throughout the 90-minute show, Staley seemed in good spirits,
joking about female fans camping on his front lawn and waxing ecstatic about
the new car he'd ordered -- a 2000 RAM-Air Trans-Am.

BTW, what's a 2000 RAM-Air Trans Am? I guess it's not the same as computer
RAM. Must be a guy thing

Pontiac has a direct link to the 2000 Firebird TransAm. The RAM-Air is the
injection system used by the Firebird. The TransAM version has the 320-hp and
335 ft. lbs of Torque.

cool......layne has damn good taste! the 2000 trans ams are the meanest looking
(literally) car in the world. i hope i'll be able to get one.....i got an '88
trans am. i'll start wrapping my pennies. but that is also good news since
there is talk of the firebird becoming extinct. so since he ordered one, that
means there will be a 2000 trans am.
THAT STINKS
They look good but I heard that Trans Am's,Camaros, and Firebirds weren't
reliable cars. Any truth to these cars giving people problems?
