I want to include some abba on a mix tape I'm making. What are the 4
single best Abba songs of all time?

That's Me, The Day Before You Came, Chiquitita, and of course Waterloo.
(There are so many others, but those four are quite good)

I would include "The Winner Takes It All" in the list.

Hello... cliched as it may be, the peasants out there go bananas for Dancing
Queen...still. Just go to any gay nightclub when it comes on and cover your
ears for the screams of delight. PS. Don't stand between the bar and the
dancefloor at this time.
Oh, and by the way, try any of The Visitors remixes... it has a surprising
effect.

It's very hard to pick up just 4 songs, because they change
all the time. These four are from "Now in my Top 10":

1. SOS
2. The Winner Takes It All
3. Voulez-Vous
4. Dancing Queen

My favorite is El Andar, even though I didn't know what they were saying
(or even which song it was translated from!--I only have The Album on
LP, and don't have a turntable) until I found the Spanish lyrics with
the English translation on some web page somewhere. In fact, I'm kinda
afraid to listen to the English version--what if it spoils the Spanish
version for me?

Oh no. Chiquitita is SO dull. Take A Chance On Me is a gimmick, Waterloo -
even ABBA don't like this one. Dancing Queen IS a classic. Include this.
Plus The Winner Takes It All, The Name OF The Game and S.O.S. or Mamma Mia.
These aren't necessarily MY favourites but they represent ABBA's diversity
and quality.

The Name Of The Game is too boring...granted that ABBA might not like some
of their songs, but that makes absolutely no difference whatsoever.
Waterloo is a great song, IMO, even if ABBA feel embarrassed or wahtever
about it. S.O.S. is alright I suppose, but I wouldn't put it in my top 4,
or even my top 10. Mamma Mia, on the other hand, is brilliant.

Actually, my four best ABBA songs might include The Day Before You Came and
Should I Laugh Or Cry, but these aren't the sort I'd recommend a novice!

Ditto. There seems to be a range of fans from newbies to connoseurs, and
TDBYC and SILOC appear in the latter and things like "Take a Chance on Me"
appear in the former ;-)

Hmm...well, I don't know whether or not that was supposed to be an insult or
not!
I have a big range of favourite songs, most of which are upbeat
because....well....I like upbeat songs! Maybe that includes TACOM, maybe it
doesn't - that doesn't necessarily make me a 'newbie' or otherwise. The Day
Before You Came is a good song, but not one I would choose to play very
often, because it is too lyrically heavy. I tend to look for harmonies and
good chord sequences in songs rather than lyrics, because:

a) I can't sing very well, and
b) I can play them on the piano.

My all-time favourite ABBA songs would therefore include such things as
Waterloo, Ring Ring, Chiquitita and That's Me. However, some other
favourites which work on the piano but have interesting lyrics are I Wonder
(Departure), Happy New Year, Fernando and Thank You For The Music. TDBYC
doesn't sound good (at least when I play it).

On the other hand, TACOM is an annoying song with not much merit that I can
find.

You're not the only one who likes The Piper. It seems to be forgotten
though it is on Super Trouper album and as a single. I think it's a
wonderful song.

Well said , while I love what is considered by many as mindless pop, I also
adore Abba songs like "should I laugh or Cry".......As I mentioned before
anything with Frida on the lead vocal does it for me
and while I love early Abba my fav Albums would be " Souper Trouper" and "
The Visitors"
I think I stated in an earlier post my fav 4 songs , but of all Abba
songs ever......."when All Is Said And Done" in English or Spanish is my all
time favourite track........Can anyone else name just one all time fav?

I agree. I think the best 4 ABBA songs are The Piper, Dancing Queen, Voulez
Vous and Under Attack! actually it is a very tough choice - I think making
the best 40 ABBA songs list is more reasonable...

So hard to choose, but here a little food for thought:

Under Attack: The final fling from ABBA? So sad to see them walk off in
the distance in the video ;-)
Lay All Your Love on Me: Brilliant Disco! If there ever was such a thing,
then Benny and Bjorn elevated Disco to an art. This was such a thrill for
me to listen (and listen, and listen...) when I was young. It still hasn't
changed.
Eagle: So brilliant in it's composition and production. A great song to
sit with headphones on and just marvel at how ABBA were able to escape their
POP jail.
Like an Angel Passing Though My Room: I love the Visitors and find it hard
to choose just one, but this is just so atmospheric!

Go and listen to them!
