It's what Americans call the Mexican War, of 1846-48.
The song has several clues to that effect, but the most obvious is the
reference to "that fateful night we crossed the Rio Grande," which is
when the shooting war started. (The Mexicans crossed the Rio Grande to
attack an American-held town that Mexico considered to be in its
territory.)
Also noteworthy is the line "Though we thought we'd never lose, there's
no regret," which suggests the singer is reminiscing about fighting the
good fight, albeit a losing one.
Hope that helps,
Gary K.
FERNANDO IS ABOUT A YOUNG SOLDIER GOING OFF TO WAR AND NOT KNOWING WHEN HE WILL
RETURN SO HIS GIRLFRIEND (HIS FIRST LOVE, APPARANTLY) GIVES HER VIRGINITY TO
HIM BEFORE HE LEAVES.
