Q 7.1 Are there any cool a cappella web sites?
Why, yes! Why do you ask? There are hundreds of them. And most of them
can be found at or are linked from one of these sites.
CASA has a *great* Web site with lots of information about their services
as well as links to other a cappella sites. On it you can find many more
details regarding some of the questions raised in this FAQ. Point your
browser to http://www.casa.org
Primarily A Cappella (PAC) has a site located at http://www.singers.com
There you can find complete information about all of the projects they are
involved with -- from The Summits and The Harmony Sweepstakes, to their
catalog and recording projects.
Mainely A Cappella, a new mail order CD company founded by Don Gooding,
has an extensive site at http://www.a-acappella.com -- for ordering CDs
and related a cappella merchandise, as well as others areas devoted to
other things such as the history of contemporary a cappella. They also
have over 600 RealAudio songs and song clips available at
http://www.a-cappella.com/listenmusic.html
The *definitive* directory of a cappella web pages and links was created
and maintained for many years by Greg Weiss. There you'll find links to
over 500 homepages for professional and collegiate groups and much more.

The CASA chat room is the place for a cappella music lovers to meet and
discuss a wide variety of topics. Organized chats are planned once or
twice a month and more often, if need be and you can find a complete

* Barbershop *
The Harmonet is a mailing list for fans and performers of barbershop
music. To subscribe, send email to "list...@admin.humberc.on.ca" with the
following in the BODY of the message: "SUBSCRIBE BBSHOP " your name"
(Don't use quotes and enter your real name.) The FAQ for the Harmonet is

* Bay Area A Cappella *
San Francisco, California, home of CASA, is one of the hotbeds of a
cappella music in the United States, so much so, that they have their own
web site (http://www.wenet.net/~olivier/ba-acappella/index.html) and
mailing list. To subscribe send mail to majo...@sgi.com and type
"subscribe ba-acappella" in the body of the message.
* Blenders *
If you're a fan of The Blenders, or want to be one, get on their emailing
list. Send a letter to their email address: ma...@theblenders.com . Your
email address will be automatically added to their list. They send out
information on concert schedules, album releases, and new developments in
the never-ending Blender-Saga.
* Choralist *
To join, email list...@lists.colorado.edu and in the body of your message
type the words "subscribe Choralist your fullname"
* Collegiate A Cappella Mailing Lists *
In an effort to cut down on unwanted and irrelevant spam in the mailbox of
the typical collegiate a cappella group member, CASA has put together five
regional collegiate mailing lists. For a full list of commands available
to each list, email <list>-req...@lists.best.com with the command "help"
(without the quotes) on a single line in the body of the message. For more
information about a particular list, email <list>-req...@lists.best.com
with the command "info" (without the quotes) on a single line in the body

* The Friends of the Bobs *
The FOBS mailing list discusses all aspects of the Bobs. The Bobs'
upcoming concert listing (THE POOP) is available from the "The Bobs

* German A Cappella *
There is a new mailing list available for German A Cappella music, named
Singsang. It was created in cooperation with the German CASA ambassador.
The list's main language is German (of course), but English requests and
questions are welcome.
There have been some recent changes in maintaining the list as well as the
subscription process. Check out the Singsang web page at
http://home.pages.de/~singsang/ as it carries all the updated information
at to how to subscribe. You can also ask questions to the members of the
mailing list without subscribing. See the web page for details.
* Gospel Music *
To join, email MAI...@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu and in the body of your
message have the words "SUBSCRIBE GOSPEL-L".
* The House Jacks *
The House Jacks participated in the "24 Hours in Cyberspace" project, are
in the companion book that was published, and are one of the features
included in the permanent display at the Smithsonian Institute -- all
because they communicate with their fans via the Internet. Contact them at
em...@housejacks.com and let them know that you'd like to be added to the
list. Or you can drop by their Web site at http://www.housejacks.com and
click on "Contact Us" where you can sign up for their mailing list.
* The King's Singers *
The King's Singers Mailing List is back in business after a hiatus of
about three years. It's to be a place for discussion of concerts and
albums as well as just general chatter about the group. For information,

* m-pact +
There are a couple of ways that you can be added to the m-pact mailing
list. 1) Drop them a note at li...@m-pact.com and ask to be added to the
list. 2) Visit their web site at http://www.m-pact.com and sign up for

* Rockapella *
The is a mailing list for those of you who would like updates on news and
concert dates for Rockapella. Send your email request to:
conc...@rockapella.com and, in the message portion, simply type in
"subscribe" or "unsubscribe".
* Shape Note Singing or Fasola *
Discussion and announcements of Sacred Harp singing, based on "The Sacred
Harp" songbook published in 1844 and using shaped note notation, can be
obtained by emailing: majo...@mediainfo.labmed.umn.edu and type
"Subscribe Fasola" in the message portion of your email.
* Vocalist *
To join, email majo...@lists.oulu.fi and in the body of your message
have the words "subscribe vocalist" and on the next line, "end". To get
the once-a-day digest rather than the one-at-a-time messages, have the

Q 7.4 Why is alt.music.a-cappella so quiet these days?
Originally, the only a cappella newsgroup was alt.music.a-cappella. In
August '93, a vote was put forward to create a newsgroup
rec.music.a-cappella which, aside from having better Usenet status,
(supposedly) reaches more network sites than an alt group. The vote was an
overwhelming success (342:34 in favor), so the group was created. Thanks
to Steve Simmons for suggesting the rec group and controlling the voting
process.
Due to the fact that the alt.music.a-cappella newsgroup is so quiet these
days, and the fact that most of the postings are not even related to a
cappella, we strongly suggest that you refrain from posting to it and
stick with the rec.music.c-acappella group. That's where all the good news
and discussions are held. Thanks.
The charter of the group is as follows:
rec.music.a-cappella: For a-cappella music of all styles. For
friends, fans, and singers of all flavors of pure vocal music.
Barbershop, madrigals, chorales, rockers and folkies are all
welcome provided the instruments are left home (or mostly home).
