Can someone list some albums by well-known artists (excluding the more
underground, lo-fi ones)? I know about Bruce Springsteen's 'Nebraska' but are
there any others?

aw jeez dude just about every album recorded after 1965 was probably
multitracked !!!

I know the Beatles were well-known for multitracking... Sgt. Peppers
probably was, Abbey Road probably was... you can actually hear it in a lot
of their songs.

Hendrix obviously tracked, since he had only one guitarist, Zeppelin
tracked.... can't think of any album that *wasn't* recorded in multiple
tracks.

Ween - The Pod and I'm pretty sure Pure Guava was also
I don't know if they are well known or not.
Incidently I happen to be listening to Pure Guava.

From what I've read, Sgt. Pepper was recorded on a 4-track (as was, I
believe, Revolver and Rubber Soul). Abbey Road was recorded on an 8-track.
I'm not sure about White Album, but I'd guess it was probably 8 track as
well.

Well maybe most recent pop/rock tunes were multitracked but by no means
are all albums these days recorded using multitrack recorders if you're
talking about music in general. Classical music for example is often
not multitracked. Just extremely careful mic choices and placement in a
hall with excellent acoustics. Alot of bluegrass, jazz, and even some
old-style blues stuff is recorded in this manner as well as probably
some other genres that I can't think of at the moment.
Everyonce in awhile you'll hear a live cut on a pop/rock/metal album
that will be some raw 2-track recording of a gig that they'll throw in
just for kicks. I have a "Corrosion of Conformity" heavy metal CD
somewhere around here that has some live non-multitracked bonus tracks
like that where they're playing some rowdy hill billy rock at some bar
that just is in total contrast to the rest of their modern metal music
on the CD. Those tracks were actually quite interesting and funny to
listen to despite the less then pristing audio quality.
Record you next band practice session with two mics carefully positioned
to pick up everyone evenly. The room acoustics will play a big role in
the sound quality however sometimes you'll be very suprised at the sound
quality you can get with this method. It's actually my prefered way of
recording live gigs because if it's done right it sounds like you're out
there in the audience listening to the band and the recording is perfect
for giving to bar/club owners as a demo for what your band's
performances sound like.
Anyways...2-track recording lives!

And beck's "mellow gold" and sebadoh's "freed weed" and tom waits "small
change" and waits "foreign affairs" both boast being recorded directly
live to a 2-track. The first two released recordings by they might be
giants "they might be giants" and "lincoln" sound as though they may
have been recorded on 4-track (this is not confirmed as far as I know,
but it is confirmed that they have always been pro 4-track).

Nebraska was recorded on a "home" tascam cassette 4 track. I'm guessing
that the first poster wanted to know about any other albums that were
recorded on amateur 4-track machines in that manner. Just my guess. I
don't know of any others off hand.

Pete Townshend's "Another Scoop", a fabulous collection of demos that he
recorded at home on a 4-track is the only other that comes to mind right
now.

Cocteau Twins's early recordings on 4AD were four-track, as were some of the other
early 4AD stuff.

If most modern bands don't multitrack then how do they record? I'd guess not

just browsing through the group and found this interesting thread...

early cocteau twin's recordings were 4-track??? that is the most
interesting of them all... do you know which album they moved away from
4-track (i can only assume the only album released from 4-track would be
their first "garlands" and not something like "treasure")???

if you don't mind me asking, where did you find this information??? i
would be curious to know all of the recordings that were released on 4AD
from 4-track???

4AD BANDS:

I know "His Name Is Alive" (Warren Defever) did a lot of
home recording stuff ("livonia", etc..).

It is a FACT that they made a CASSETTTE 4-TRACK recording
which was released on the "Jerry McGuire" soundtrack. I was
kinda confused as to how they got on that, but in any case,
it ended up being the highest selling ANALOGUE CASSETTE 4-
TRACK recording ever(I'm sure the movie being so popular
had most to do with that).

Okay. I didn't realize the question was more "4 track versus 2 tracks." I
thought it was more like "hey, is this multitracking thing popular," to
which the only possible answer is "immensely."

Woe...I never said most modern bands don't multitrack. In fact most
modern bands do record to multitrack recorders. I was just saying that
live to 2-track recordings are still quite common especially in certain
music genres. They also are occasionally mixed with multitrack songs on
an album.

Well, for starters, most of ELO's stuff is 4-track. We used to call them the
"Kings of Ping-Pong"...

Well, this is a little off-target here, but damn I love TMBG's
"Lincoln"...I went nuts for them when I first heard that album....I'd really
like to know if they did that on 4-track.

Well, Alot of the material on They Might Be Giants first album (the Pink
one) was done at home on a four-track. Sorry if that isn't "famous" enough for
you!
