Hi,

I have a Fostex FD-4 and I am interested in putting an internal hard drive
in it. So far I havce not been able to find out much info about doing
that. Is it possible to do it myself or will I have to get Fostex or a
dealer to it for me? I have Fostex's list of hard drives that work in it
but do any of you use a different drive in yours? Has anyone here actually
installed an internal drive in one?

Also does anyone know if a Syquest SyJet 1.5 GB SCSI drive will work
exernally? It is not listed or mentioned on Fostex's drive list.

Thanks,
Glenn

This is what I heard from Fostex!
They will put a IDE 2.5" 2.1gig
in your FD4 $275 if you send it in to them.
They said it takes a installment kit and
that they won't sell one to you to put it in yourself.
and if you put IDE in your FD4 the warranty is Void!
I would buy a 250zip or that Syjet 1.5gig or a large SCSI external unit.

Hi There !

I have a 4.3 GB internal HD installed by the factory . My advice to you
would be to find a Fostex service center and have them install an internal HD
for you . It is worth the money and keeps your setup portable . If portability
is not a factor , it may be cheaper to setup an external SCSI HD as they are
very reasonably priced these days .

I have done this with my Fostex VR800. I bought a fast IBM Drive, which
was not in the compatibility list. The process of installing the Drive
was very easy. There are not too many places to put the Drive into. I
suggest you get some screws, make sure you have the power connectors
unplugged open the case. After that, every one of the following steps
will be obvious.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. Fostex is currently installing a 6 GB drive but
the cost is around $250 or so. I'm not sure this is worth that much to me.
I didn't pay much more than that for the FD-4 itself. I can buy an
internal 2.5 inch hard drive for much less than that. I might open up my
FD-4 and see if it looks like I can add a drive myself.

Otherwise, has anybody used a Syquest SyJet with a FD-4? It holds 1.5 GB.
I might try that as an alternative.

Thanks,
Glenn

The SCSI Syjet is what they paired with the FD8,but it will also work well
for the FD4.
the 1.5 cartridges for the Syquest Syjet you will find here.

I use an FD-4 with a SCSI ORB drive (2.2 GIG) -- it works GREAT

Well you got a Bargain if you paid only $299 new w.o. a drive, that's what
they were going for used.I paid $649 for mine 18 months ago,with a 230mb
ezflyer.
The FD4 is good machine, but remember to turn on both the FD4 and scsi unit
with out the cartridge in the drive, then put in the cartridge or you will
get a era.
Or turn on the drive first put cartridge in let it come up to green then
turn on the FD4,if you don't start it these two ways
you will get era's!
With a IDE as soon as you turn on the FD4 it is ready no problem.

There are only three drives that the Fostex FD-4 product manager recommends:
100mb ZIP, 250MB ZIP and the internal 340MB with proprietary chassis kit
that only Fostex installs. I use the 250MB option and it works great. Use
of the 340MB internal (which is the only size offered) is somewhat a joke
because 340MB will only support a multitrack few songs. In turn, you would
need to buy a ZIP drive for archiving or additional songs. So I just went
to the 250MB ZIP and manage the disks. No sound degradation since there is
no compression. Anyway, that was my logic...

Also, the list of "approved" third party hard drives is somewhat bogus
because they will only stand behind the ZIP.

Best of Luck!

Thanks for the info. I already have a Syjet but I need to get an adapter
to use it with the FD4. I will certainly try it now.

Thanks,
Glenn
