I'm thinking about getting the Fostex X-12 or the Tascam Porta 02 4-track.
Musician's friend has the fostex for 120 and the tascam for like 150 or
something. Cost aside, what do you think is the better of the two and why?

thanks in advance

I haven't used the TASCAM, but I would rather cut off both my earsb
than ever use that Fostex again - the things break after 5 seconds, add
twice as much noise to the tape as there is signal level, speed up and
slow down constantly, snap tapes... you'd honestly get a better
recording cutting to a wax disc...

The porta2 is really a lot better. If you experiment enough and get the right
mics you can get better quality recordings than you would think.

Go with the TASCAM. Although I now use my TASCAM 488MkII primarily, my
original PortaOne is still recording fine. Just follow the instructions in the
manual for cleaning and degaussing REGULARLY and I think you'll have the same
experience.
IMHO, TASCAM makes very reliable equipment.

i'd advise you to go with the tascam, since they seem to be known for
making better equipment in terms of reliability, .. also the particular
fostex model you mention looks almost 'too basic' to be really of much
more help than a regular tape recorder.

having said that, i do own a fostex and i'm satisfied with it, both in
terms of sound quality and reliability (for now, that is.. i've had it
for a year now). i did have a problem with the first one i brought home
(it was the exhibition model, it had been sitting in the sun for god
knows how long) but they replaced it for me and this one works just
fine. good luck

First of all, have you tried E-Bay? There are a number of recorders selling
very cheaply on there. I saw a Tascam 8-track go for $365 last week,
another went for $405 (beat out my $400 with only a few seconds to go). I
currently have a Fostex X-77 which is a very fine machine, much better than
a Porta 02 or a X-12. I've seen these go for $200 - $250 many times. A
number of people are going digital and are dumping their analog equipment.
Others bought them, used them a few times, then put them in their closets.

**** warning shameless plug to follow *****

I should know, I'm getting ready to sell my Porta-07. I bought it a new few
years ago when the "bug" to record hit me. I used it a few times, then
because of changing jobs, kids, wife, etc. I never got back to it. When
the "bug" hit again, I decided that what I needed was a better machine, so I
got the Foxtex X-77 of of E-Bay for around $350. The Porta-07 is a good
machine, I believe I paid $325 new. If your interested in buying it for
$150 let me know at bradle...@ameritech.net.

Otherwise, give E-Bay a try. Be sure to check the seller's feedback before
you bid.

Bradley

I just want to add that I think that is a good deal. I used to own the
Tascam Porta-07 and if you use external mic preamps with it, you can get
excellent sound quality out of it. I had mine for years and it always
worked like a champ. Good solid little recorder and definitely a step up
from the Porta-02.
