i just bought a used fostex450 16 channel mixer and i cant figure out how to rn
it through speakers. the only way i can do it is through the headphone jack,
but when turned up loud at all, it sounds bad. if you have any comments, i'd
really appreciate it. also i need some help on how to connect it with a 4
track recrder.

thanks,

Hello, shad. Funny, I just also bought a used Fostex 450 (from Sam Ash for
$130.00), but mine is basically an 8-channel, plus some buss inputs and aux inputs.
Maybe it appears to be 16 channel due to the XLR plus 1/4" inputs on each channel.
Just in case yours is really 16 channels let's compare. How many faders does yours
have? Mine has 8 channel faders and 4 buss faders. I like the unit, especially the
EQ. There are Main stereo outputs and inputs on the rear panel. The outputs will
drive amplified speakers. However, there are aux inputs that do not make it to the
stereo outputs. Neither do the stereo inputs. If you push the stereo button, the
stereo inputs become active. These stereo and aux inputs do not have gain or pan
controls; they are routed right to the outputs. They do make it to the monitor and
phone outputs, however. This deck was apparently designed for multi-track tape
machines. It has inserts (from and to), tape in and direct out for each channel.
To feed a 4-track, assuming you have more than 4 tracks of info, I would use the 4
busses (the extra faders on the right side of the mixer. On the top panel near the
back, there are buss inputs and outputs for each of the 4 busses. Each channel has
a pan (L/R or odd/even) and buss switch (1,2 or 3,4). With these controls, you get
the mix right for each of the 4 outputs and just record them to the individual 4
tracks of the 4-track tape machine. Assumed is that the 4-track can record all 4
tracks at the same time. If you have only 4 tracks of information, you can drive
the 4-track directly from the channels. To do this use the D. Out (direct out) jack
to feed each tape track.

As far as the audio output, the mixer is a line level unit that needs
amplification. It is not a powered mixer that'll drive speakers directly (I wish it
were). Using the buss outputs the way I explained should give you audio at the rear
panel stereo master outs (use the stereo pot beneath the meters and advance the
buss faders - always necessary to hear any output, monitor (use the monitor gain
pot beneath the meters) and of course the headphone jacks, both in parallel.

I have visited the Fostex web site but cannot find reference to this old console. I
would like to find an instruction manual for it or hear from anyone who has used
this piece. By the way, you can use outboard effects, too by using the aux output
(either 1 or 2, 2 if you have a stereo effect unit) to drive the effect. Whatever
channel you want a reverb on, for instance, you turn up the aux gain on. The effect
return can be any unused channel (great for having control of the effect EQ) or use
buss inputs. More modern mixers have extra stereo inputs and outputs with their own
fader controls and they also have dedicated effect sends and returns, but the 450
is a great mixer with excellent audio and headroom for overdrive. At the price you
and I got ours for (I hope you also got a good deal), we have excellent equipment.
Let me know how you make out with it. Sit down without any interruptions and play,
with an external stereo system for the monitors and/or stereo outputs, and the
phones. Remember that aux inputs are not heard in the master stereo outputs.

Do we have any Fostex 450 experts watching?

These mixers sound great. Do not let anyone tell you other wise I owned both the 8 and 16 channel versions and they had a sound that in my opinion rivaled some of the best console mony can buy. I record some tracks in my bedroom and most people who heard my tracks assumed I had gone to a mega bucks studio to cut those tracks.

hey Jarvis, Ken explained it well enough but just make sure you get a pair of RCA L/R lead, they come in red and white or red and black.
