Appendix 3: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
==============================================================================

MUD stands for Multi-User Domain, or Multi-User Dungeon (historically). To
connect to all muds aside from some AberMUDs, on Un*x systems, enter: 'telnet
<name of the computer the mud resides on -or- the IP number> <port - that
four-digit number>'; On VMS systems, enter: 'telnet <computer name>/port=<port
number>'. For some AberMUDs, telnet without the port number and login using
the provided login name. Also, VMS MultiNet screws up Tiny* muds, rendering
the text unreadable. TINT (a VMS client) fixes this.
Then comes entering the game proper. On LPmuds, at the 'Name:' (or some
synonym) prompt, enter the name you would like to go by. It will then print
'New character' if this is your first time. Then you will be asked for a
password. It will ask for the password again the first time, for verification
purposes. From there, you are now a full-fledged player! For further help,
type in 'help' or ask other players. Wizards (people who have conquered the
game, and thus are able to change their title and alignment) should know
just about everything about the game, and be happy to help a newbie
*temporarily*. They will not babysit anyone, nor help out with experiance,
money, or other material things.
On tinyMUD-style games (tinyMUD, tinyMUSH, tinyMUCK, MOO, TeenyMUD, etc.)
use 'create <player> <password>', and from there ask other players for help.
Some things, however. For all future logins, use 'connect <player> <password>',
to get a list of all players present type in 'WHO', and the same disclaimers
apply to TinyWizards as do to LP Wizards.
On DikuMUDs, after an LP-style login, you need to select 'Enter the game'
from the entry menu, and also select a character class (thief, warrior, cleric,
etc.). The game plays more like Dungeons&Dragons than other muds. To get
started, find a group of players, and ask to join.
For any other questions/problems you might have, _ask other players_. A more
comprehensive FAQ sheet is posted every so often to the newsgroup
rec.games.mud; questions are also answered there. And, above all, have fun!
