I guess this posting is directed primarily to the British audience since they
seem to have been running private muds for some time now. I am not sure if
this question has been asked before, but here it goes again if it has. Does
anyone out there know of ANY Mud source, be it LP, Tiny, Diku, Aber, Unter
etc. that has been successfully ported to MS-DOS and can be run from a BBS?
If so, is the source available anywhere? I would like to save myself a load
of coding if this has already been done and someone is willing to put the
source up for anonymous ftp. I do not relish the thought of going through all
the existing Mud (whatever kind) code and making it portable to MS-DOS. I am
very interested in running a private Mud from a BBS for those unfortunate
people without Net access. But mostly as a local Mud, to see how many players
would actually be drawn in to a non-net mud. Actually, I am not fully sure
about my intentions in setting up a BBS Mud other than that I haven't seen
it done in the US and think it would be neat to try out. If anyone can help
me out with some info on this, it would be greatly appreciated. E-mail me
if you like, or post so everyone can benefit.

I am setting up a sun/2 (old and slow) and it will be running a
mud. If your time is worth anything to you, I would suggest you
consider moving your bbs system onto a sysVr4 Unix or getting an
old sun if you really want to run MUD.
That is what I am doing.

Actually, there is a MUD-like game that was written specifically for MS-DOS.
It's called DNDBBS and it has multi-node capability... (naturally.. :) )
It will probably run under any BBS software, but I've only actually seen it
under Telegard, Opus, and Citadel. (don't ask what Citadel is...<grin> )

However... being a wimpy MSDOS program it's not truly flexible. Sure, you can
create your own rooms/monsters/objects, but you can't edit the source code.
In fact, the game is kinda small... Well, perhaps you could talk the author
into a copy of the source code? (right!)

Anyway, you might want to check it out. Look around a bit on your local BBSes.
If you can't find it there email me and I'll give you the number of a BBS here
in my area you could get it off of. (Dallas,TX) Also, you could look at the
Simtel20 FTP site... they may have it.

I wouldn't wish DNDBBS on anyone... I've played with it (about half an hour)
and like most QuickBASIC programs, it's terribly slow...even on a 286.
You can, however, get the source by registering the software with the author.
A local board here had both the executables and source for a while.
