But before he became a global superstar, Collins had to face a personal crisis that inspired his first solo album, Face Value. Released on 13 February 1981, Face Value was a raw and emotional expression of Collins' pain and anger after his first wife filed for divorce in 1979. The album featured some of his most iconic songs, such as "In the Air Tonight", "I Missed Again" and "If Leaving Me Is Easy", as well as a cover of The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" and a hidden track of "Over the Rainbow".

Face Value was recorded from mid-1980 to early 1981 with Collins and Hugh Padgham as producers. Collins played most of the instruments himself, except for some guest appearances by the Phenix Horns, Alphonso Johnson, Eric Clapton and other musicians. The album showcased Collins' versatility and creativity as a solo artist, blending pop, rock, soul, jazz and experimental elements. The album also introduced Collins' signature drum sound, achieved by using gated reverb on his snare drum.

Face Value was an instant commercial success and critical acclaim. It reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart for three weeks and No. 7 on the US Billboard 200. It has since sold over 5 million copies in the US and over 1.5 million in the UK. The album received widespread praise from critics, who praised Collins' honesty, vulnerability and musical diversity. Rolling Stone called it "a masterpiece of deep soul" and AllMusic described it as "a stunning debut".

Face Value marked the beginning of Collins' solo career, which would run parallel to his work with Genesis. It also established him as one of the most distinctive and influential voices of the 1980s and beyond. In January 2016, Face Value was reissued with bonus tracks and new photography in the style of the original but featuring a present-day Collins.

Collins continued his solo career throughout the 1980s and 1990s, releasing seven more studio albums and numerous hit singles. He also collaborated with other artists, such as Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, Philip Bailey, Howard Jones, David Crosby and Sting. He also composed and performed songs for several films, such as Against All Odds (1984), White Nights (1985), Buster (1988), Tarzan (1999) and Brother Bear (2003). He won several awards for his solo work, including an Oscar, a Golden Globe and seven Grammy Awards.

Collins also maintained his involvement with Genesis, recording four more albums with them and touring extensively. He left the band in 1996 to focus on his solo career and family life. He reunited with them briefly for a tour in 2007. In 2010, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis.

Collins announced his retirement from music in 2011, citing health problems and a desire to spend more time with his children. However, he returned to the music scene in 2015, releasing a memoir titled Not Dead Yet and remastering his solo albums. He also embarked on a comeback tour in 2017, titled Not Dead Yet Live. In 2020, he rejoined Genesis for another reunion tour, titled The Last Domino?, which was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Collins is widely regarded as one of the most influential and successful musicians of all time, having sold over 150 million records worldwide as a solo artist and over 100 million records with Genesis. He has influenced many artists across different genres, such as Lorde, Adele, Bruno Mars, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams. He has also been praised for his versatility, innovation and craftsmanship as a singer, songwriter, drummer and producer.
