how to replace colon with dollar in a string through batch file

Hi I want to replace all colon occurrence with dollar sign in a batch
file. I am having hard time doing it. Can anybody heolp please?

Using NTish windows

set var=text:with:colons:
set var=%var::=$%
echo %var%

*** Use the "Search & Replace" feature of your text editor if you don't
want to use the command-line solutions already presented.

Thanks a lot guys .... I am actually kind of new to windows bat....so
far warking with Linux/Unix shells ...

great help ...i did already invested 2 to 3 hours to have it solve but
ur solution did it in a min.
