I also really liked the subtle symbolism throughout the drama which referenced its own title, such as the king giving his love a gift of an ornamental piece depicting the moon embracing the sun, and the head shaman forecasting events of chaos and trouble based on the red hues of the moon in the sky. Sometimes dramas completely move away from their title and you can lose sight of what the main storyline is, but The Moon Embracing the Sun always remembers to show us which characters are mainly important and how their relationship plays out in the story.
Over the years, I have received many emails from people about this post. Most expressed gratitude for learning something new, many with questions on things they can do to align their periods with the moon, and some sharing stories of trauma and stress surrounding their cycles. I am extremely grateful that this topic has been so beneficial for so many, so much so that I figured it was time to revisit it.

Women who get their period around the full moon are on the Red Moon cycle. Historically, the Red Moon cycle belonged to the medicine women, the midwives, and the wisdom keepers of the community. If you bleed with the full moon, your energy is focused on self-actualization, and on using that self-actualization to empower others.
For one, my period has shifted. Historically, a white moon bleeder, suddenly my period moved so that I was bleeding with the full moon. At first, I was concerned, (why the change?), but then I realized that it must just be nature communing with me and perhaps, there was a message there. Instead of going inwards, I was being nudged to be more outward facing, which in all honesty, was a bit of a challenge for me.
Eight years later, Lee Hwon is now king. Yeon-woo is now Shaman Wol (which means "moon"); unaware of Wol's true identity, the Queen Mother calls her to the palace so that she can cure the King's "illness." The King is struck by Wol's unmistakeable resemblance to Yeon-woo, and he quietly launches an investigation into Yeon-woo's death. Meanwhile, Wol struggles to understand the strange memories of her life as Yeon-woo, which she interprets as shamanic visions. Wol must fight Queen Bo-Kyung, the Queen Mother, and Prime Minister Yoon in order to reclaim her rightful place as the Queen of Joseon. Political intrigue continues to build and comes shockingly to a head as King Lee Hwon fights for his throne, fights for the woman he loves, and fights for his very life.
