FYI the following was supplied by an engineer from MS Support

At the command prompt, you can run manual scans and force the malware
definition updates using MpCmdRun.exe.

To review available options:

1. From a command prompt, change directory to \Program Files\Microsoft
Security Essentials
NOTE: On my Win 7 Home Premium SP-1 64 bit the location is
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security
Client\Antimalware\MpCmdRun.exe"
2. At the command prompt, type one of these commands to view all
available options:
a. MpCmdRun /?
b. MpCmdRun /hsamp/scatrac
c. MpCmdRun -?
d. MpCmdRun -h

I wouldn't execute B above. It looks to be an undocumented command - there's no telling what it will do. (I changed the text so it won't run).

Here's some more info.
