80% correct. (I HATE Chocolat!!!!)

80% (Michael Douglas lost?)

80% - Pollock resurgence.

> 6. Director: Stephen Daldry, ''Billy Elliot''; Ang Lee, ''Crouching Tiger,
> Hidden Dragon''; Steven Soderbergh, ''Erin Brockovich''; Ridley Scott,

80% - Daldry?

40% - yikes! I should have known - Everybody Famous is going to be
released by Miramax. Sigh.

> 8. Screenplay (written based on material previously produced or published):
> Robert Nelson Jacobs, ''Chocolat''; Wang Hui Ling and James Schamus and Tsai
> Kuo Jung, ''Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon''; Ethan Coen & Joel Coen, ''O

80% - all the awards High Fidelity won for its screenplay didn't help
much...

> Famous''; Lee Hall, ''Billy Elliot''; Susannah Grant, ''Erin Brockovich'';
> David Franzoni and John Logan and William Nicholson, ''Gladiator''; Kenneth

80% - but I guessed Gladiator may replace my fifth choice.

> 11. Cinematography: ''Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,'' ''Gladiator,''
> ''Malena,'' ''O Brother, Where Art Thou?,'' ''The Patriot.''

80% - Malena over The Cell?!?!?!?!

Oh yeah, it's Miramax.

> 14. Original Score: ''Chocolat,'' Rachel Portman; ''Crouching Tiger, Hidden
> Dragon,'' Tan Dun; ''Gladiator,'' Hans Zimmer; ''Malena,'' Ennio Morricone;

60% - Didn't guess The Patriot or Miramax.

60% - Thank *GOD* Bjork was nominated instead of others like, ugh,
Garth Brooks.

> 17. Documentary Feature: ''Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the

> ''Scottsboro: An American Tragedy,'' ''Sound and Fury.''

40% - Heh. I guess Derek was wrong about only 1 being eligible.

My percentage of being correct - 73.8%.

At least I passed :p

I am SOOO happy that CTHD was nominated! And Gladiator too! Traffic was
great as well. WOW! Finally a year where I have seen almost every movie
nominated! (I haven't seen Chocolat) For me it is really tough to choose. I
will be happy for any of those 3 to win, but I do have a soft spot for CTHD.
I loved it. As for Erin Brockovich, in a way, it would be nice for it to
win, because pictures like that don't always get nominated, let alone win.
It is mostly these heavy period dramas and stuff, at least in past years.
This year is going to be pretty fun if you ask me.

This will either go to Del Toro or Phoenix for the academy likes to see
characters that are at risk of death.

Probably Judi Dench since she is British in a European film.

Since ''Gladiator'' was originally supposed to have been made way back in
1960, but it was dropped in favor of ''Spartacus'', I think that
''Gladiator'' will win this Oscar.

Out of these I have only seen GLADIATOR, but I think it's strong enough
to stand a chance here.

Crowe and Hanks were both perfect in their roles - haven't seen the
others.

Only saw THE CONTENDER here, and I think it;s the kind of role that
Hollywood likes to reward.

> 4. Supporting Actor: Jeff Bridges, ''The Contender''; Willem Dafoe, ''Shadow
> of the Vampire''; Benicio Del Toro, ''Traffic''; Albert Finney, ''Erin

Again, only saw CONTENDER and GLADIATOR... Bridges probably stands a
better chance than Phoenix because his role is more... human?

>
> 5. Supporting Actress: Judi Dench, ''Chocolat''; Marcia Gay Harden,
> ''Pollock''; Kate Hudson, ''Almost Famous''; Frances McDormand, ''Almost

I'm not much of a movie snob here; I only saw ALMOST FAMOUS, and I think
Hudson and McDormand both have strong points in their performances, so I
won't try to guess who stands a better chance of winning.

>
> 6. Director: Stephen Daldry, ''Billy Elliot''; Ang Lee, ''Crouching Tiger,
> Hidden Dragon''; Steven Soderbergh, ''Erin Brockovich''; Ridley Scott,
> ''Gladiator''; Steven Soderbergh, ''Traffic.''

Only saw GLADIATOR in this category. Overall it's well done, but I
won't put it above TRAFFIC or CROUCHING TIGER, because those films were
also directed with a very "directed" look, or so I hear.

>
> 7. Foreign Film: ''Amores Perros,'' Mexico; ''Crouching Tiger, Hidden

Seen none of them. No comment.

ALMOST FAMOUS edges out GLADIATOR in this race.

>
> 10. Art Direction: ''Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,'' ''Dr. Seuss' How the

Only saw GLADIATOR. Can't rule out the others.

>
> 11. Cinematography: ''Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,'' ''Gladiator,''
> ''Malena,'' ''O Brother, Where Art Thou?,'' ''The Patriot.''

Saw GLADIATOR and THE PATRIOT in this category. PATRIOT seemed fairly
restrained for an epic film (unless you count the numerous SLO-MO shots)
and I think the Academy would go for GLADIATOR above PATRIOT.

>
> 12. Sound: ''Cast Away,'' ''Gladiator,'' ''The Patriot,'' ''The Perfect

Seen all but PERFECT STORM. It's a tight race.

>

U-571 will kick the SPACE COWBOYS ass!

>
> 14. Original Score: ''Chocolat,'' Rachel Portman; ''Crouching Tiger, Hidden

THE PATRIOT's score was nothing special, but GLADIATOR's was the best
I've heard in years. And hey, if you're gonna nominate Portman, give
THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE a listen.

Only seen MEET THE PARENTS - 'Fool in Love' was okay, but I don't think
it'll hold up against the others. And I'm seriously pissed that they
totally stiffed FREQUENCY, which had a wonderful piece by Garth Brooks
titled 'When You Come Back to Me Again'. Why was this not considered?

>
> 16. Costume: ''Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,'' ''Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch
> Stole Christmas,'' ''Gladiator,'' ''102 Dalmatians,'' ''Quills.''

I've only seen GLADIATOR in this category, so I'm not saying much when I
say it was impressive. But hey, while we're talking about costume
design, where's THE PATRIOT? I could easily accept 102 DALMATIANS being
bumped for the revolutionary war.

>

Haven't seen them.

Haven't seen them.

GLADIATOR edges out ALMOST FAMOUS here, unless they consider it *too*
obvious.

Haven't seen them.

Have not seen them, will not comment.

GLADIATOAR was impressive, but I got a feeling that HOLLOW MAN will win.

I would not say that.

The truth is that I added little comments to an abbreviated
version of the list that Caro had posted.

I believe the others added their comments, but without
cutting down the list.

Why was Jeff Bridges nominated over Gary Oldman? I thought Oldman's
performance was a little tougher, and more interesting. Any opinions (if
anyone cares)?
I know Oldman had that who thing about him putting down the producers of
the movie, but I wouldn't think Hollywood politics would play such an
obvious role in giving the nomination to the Liberal Bridges, and not the
Conservative Oldman.
Mikhel
P.S. Yes, I DID think Bridges' performance was good, but I believe Oldman's
performance was stronger.
