Has anyone managed to make sense of this film - definately the MOST
surreal film I've ever seen!

No. I liked the Robert Blake character in it especially when he accosts
Bill Pulman at the party and does the thing with the phone. Scary? But
what happened to that kid. He goes to jail and wakes up someone else. Gary
Busey cries when they talk of something that must have been traumatic but we
don't know what it is. I liked the movie but either didn't get it
completely or there was nothing to get?

I take it you haven't seen An Andalusian Dog, by spanish director Luis Bunuel....?

Now that is TRUE surrealism cinema......!!!!!   It's a short silent film from the early surrealism era (1929).

He worked with Salvador Dàli, a surreal painter of brilliant talent who worked by the way with Alfred Hitchcock.

Check out that film if you ever get the chance, you'll see that Lost Highway has a much better and clearer structure than you ever thought......

Split personality disorder.... The main character is a paranoid
schizophrenic.

And Lynch's view of a gradual mental breakdown of a single simple man, but
as well as a breakdown of modern society.

It was quite easy to see if you look at this film from a different view than
just, "why and how..."

Well, a lot of people say that Lynch is more concerned with presenting a
mood and atmosphere, and abandons logic to get you to that same weird
"feeling".

Bunuel aside, what about Eraserhead?

Dan, has "mood & atmosphere" become the new term for "absence of script?" LOL!!
Sorry, but I still stand by my original comments: LOST HIGHWAY was
ONGEPOTCHKET!heh It was all over the place!! It wasn't even WILD AT HEART!eh
What on earth happened to the man!? He gives us such gems as ERASERHEAD, THE
ELEPHANT MAN and BLUE VELVET, only to end with dreck like LH?
