I guess you're talking about La Nouvelle Vague. (in France, we write it with
caps. Sorry, we have respect for these filmmakers and their movies with "all
kinds of crazy shit in it".)

Someone said "impressionism" is one post. That's wrong. French Impressionism
is about painting artistry (Renoir, Manet, Monet, Cézanne...), not about movie
making.

SS Johnny and Roger Wilco are both right. Nouvelle Vague or French New Wave
(Not to be confused with the British New Wave that involved a lot of
mohicans and glue sniffing) was responsible for the notion of the director
as auteur or author of the film.

This was true for Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Louis Malle and Claude
Chabrol (who wrote, directed edited and acted in their movies) but has now
become so misused that virtually every director thinks he or she is a genius
and hence the ubiquitous "A film by..." that makes all us writers go
GRRRR!!!

As well as the list SS Johnny provided, you should check out Breathless aka
À bout de souffle (1959). Not to be confused with the Richard Gere, steamy
but passionless, remake of 1983.

For websites check out www.foreignfilms.com , they have biographies, lists
of films and links to other sites.

Doesn't that break the rules of French punctuation? Titles don't usually
get the *all* caps treatment -- usually just the first word and any
proper names -- n'est-ce pas?

Unless these titles have been elevated to institutions which is the case of
the Nouvelle Vague. :-)

I was the someone who said "impressionism". I suspect the poster was
actually talking about New Wave, but it had already been given so I offered
another alternative. You are incorrect when you say that impressionism does
not have anything to do with movie making. Perhaps you are correct from your
own perspective, but certain forms of film are in fact referred to as that,
at least in my country. French Impressionism was preceded by German
Expressionism and was followed by Surrealism. All borrowing their terms from
what is initially considered only applicable to painting artistry.

Sometimes, Frédérick , when you see the delight some wannabe and working
Hollywood scriptwriters take in being low-brow crapheads for whom the word
"art" is the ultimate insult, it's not hard to understand why Tinsel Town
makes the dreck it makes.

It ain't always the producers' fault. I've finally come to the conlusion
that most of the worst garbage I've seen lately is down to the writers.

Wow! Strong words. Could only come from an internationally-recognised film
industry leader with impeccable credentials!

I'm impressed
