Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone here could recommend any films which depict
Mesoamericans?. I am looking for films in the tradition of Mel
Gibson's "Apocalypto" (2006) or even films which depict Native Indians
elsewhere in the Americas such as John Boorman's "The Emerald
Forest" (1985) and Michael Mann's
"The Last of the Mohicans" (1992). I really enjoy Mesoamerican
depictions with breath taking cinematography such as in Apocalypto.

Any suggestions?

Thank You

For me, the go-to film for Mesoamerica in gorgeous cinematography
is "The Mission."

Cross posting from the sf group, the only thing I can come up
with on topic there is an old horror flick, "The Manitou," which
is not exactly visually breath taking.

(There's the 4-episode Doctor Who serial "The Aztecs," but that's
TV, and also lacking in the breath taking department.)

Not Meso-, but Native-American-related was a small 1983 film, EYES OF
FIRE, set in colonial times that was pretty good. The IMDB says: "A
preacher is accused of adultery and he and his followers are chased out
of town and become stranded in an isolated forest which is haunted by
the spirits of long dead Native Americans."

Also the 1992 THUNDERHEART has some magical elements.

THE ROYAL HUNT OF THE SUN is about Pizarro and Atahualpa.

Are you looking for pre-Columbian in specific?

Also, from answer.yahoo.com:

Films about Hernando Cortez:

Tyrannosaurus Azteca (2007)
A Day in Their Lives: Conquistador (2001) (TV)
The Road to El Dorado (2000)
La Otra conquista (1998)
The Golden Years (1992) (TV)
Slo con tu pareja (1991) Pafnucio Santo (1977)
The Secret Life of Hernando Cortez (1969)
Captain from Castile (1947)
The Fall of Montezuma (1912)

Films about Aztecs:
The Demon and the Mummy (1976)
The Feathered Serpent (1948)
Thunder Over Mexico (1933)
Captain from Castile (1947)
La Cabeza viviente (1963)
La Momia azteca (1957)
The Dead One (2007)
Aztec Legend (2004)
Serpent and the Sun: Tales of an Aztec Apprentice (2008)

Well there are the Werner Herzog madness, notably
_Aguirre, The Wrath of God_, and _Fitzcaraldo_. (Is
Cobra Verde_ set in South America or Africa?

I have never been a Herzog fan. From the same period,
I much prefer _The Valley Obscured by the Clouds_
by Barbet Schroeder, starring Bulle Ogier.

_Black Robe_, unfortunately set in the north, and
_The New World_, in Virginia. Speaking of Terrence
Malick and native Americans,I always thought he
should be the one to tackle Cormac McCarthy's
_Blood Meridian_, my favorite novel of all time (if you
can call that a novel). One visionary contending
with another. Ridley Scott was set to adapt that
for a while, and now it is rumored to be helmed by
... Todd Field? I had the misfortune of watching his
_Little Children_. The only thing he contends for
is the worst director of all time.

And don't forget _Indiana Jones_ 1 & 4!
