I don't cruise the newsgroups as often as I would like, so maybe you've
already discussed this film...I am just wondering your thoughts on it since
Terrence Howard is nominated for Best Actor, but the movie wasn't given a
nod at all except for soundtrack/song.

Don't misunderstand, I think Howard deserves the award ... I think he was
surprised at the nomination and seems so humble about it. Hope he wins it!

Peace!

He'll get his due eventually, if not this year, in some later year. He
was in "Crash," and he turned an outstanding performance there. But in
that movie, everyone did. I didn't see "Hustle & Flow," so I can't
comment on it. But in "Crash," he was great in it.

Last night I saw, "Good Night and Good Luck," the last in the list of
movies nominated for Best Picture. For the first time in my life, I've
actually seen all five of them. Prior to this year, I think the most
I'd ever seen was three. Of all of the films, I found "Munich" the
least memorable, but I don't mean to say that it wasn't memorable. But
as time passed, my initial reaction cooled toward it as the other more
original films came along. "Good Night and Good Luck" was almost like a
play in that the entire thing happened in only four or five rooms, and
there were no exterior shots. This gave it an intense, claustrophobic
feel, an urgency of message.

Friday night, I saw "Capote." Everybody's talking about Philip Seymour
Hoffman's performance as Truman Capote, which was indeed an unwavering
depiction, but the man who played Perry Smith, Clifton Collins Jr., was
just as impressive.

Anyway, after seeing all five movies, I can't say which one is a clear
winner. I think the Academy will be too afraid to pick "Brokeback
Mountain," afraid of some backlash from the morals crowd. "Good Night
and Good Luck" is too closed in, like something hermetically sealed.
"Munich" worked too hard at being BIG but in the end, it felt common. I
think it'll be a toss-up between "Capote" and "Crash."

We'll see. We've got about a month.

I think you're so right about the films chosen this year. I said the exact
same words about them to my daughter. She says Brokeback will get the pic,
but I don't think America is ready yet for its number one film to be about
two gay cowboys; I just don't. But I do think it will win in other
catagories maybe just to justify Ledger getting the nod for actor.

I would bet on Crash except the title doesn't sound enough Oscarish, so
Copote will more than likely win. As far as actor goes, Howard's role was so
out of character from anything else that I have seen him in that I really
believe he has a great chance to win. He "walks the walk and talks the talk"
and even raps.

I am not a fan of rap music, but Howard was so good in that role, that I
actually went out and bought the soundtrack and DVD, which I have watched
four times now. He makes a person that would normally seem disgusting
likeable. I hope you watch the film and give us your take on it.
